FREQUENCY AND EVALUATION OF STRATEGY USE IN SILL

QUESTIONNAIRE THROUGH AN INNOVATIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICE

APPLIED ON MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN PUPILS IN THRACE

In the present study an attempt is made to investigate the use of learning

strategies in correlation with the confidence of the subjects as to whether

and to what extent such strategies enhance their language learning. Forty

eight students from the first three grades in a State Secondary school, in

Komotini, Thrace, were recruited through convenience sampling, twenty four

Christians and twenty four Muslims. There were sixteen learners out of each

grade, eight of low and eight of high level in English, four male, four female,

forty eight learners altogether, twenty four male and twenty four female

students.

The innovative element introduced in this study concerns the use of

a new application developed on request for this particular study by

Nikolaidou (2013), using Visual Basic 2010 with Microsoft Access, which

is based on a very simple user interface. The subjects indicated not only the

level of frequency of strategy use but also their confidence in those

strategies; effectiveness, using the bar introduced by Kambakis Vougiouklis

P. and Vougiouklis T. (2008) on their computer, instead of the Likert scale.

The time of filling in was minimized by the use of the bar, as participants do

not really have to refine differences such as generally not true of me and

somewhat true of me, saving time in this way to devote to another

parameter

The questionnaire used was the translated and validated SILL

questionnaire (Gavriilidou 2012). Each of the 50 questions of the original

SILL was followed by another question checking the subjects evaluation of

the effectiveness of each strategy, or whether subjects felt confidence using

each strategy. That clearly brings the total of the questions to be answered

to 100 overall; however, the use of the new electronic tool eliminated both

time and effort for the participants, who appeared to get very easily

familiarized with the use of the electronic tool.

Another great advantage of the tool used is that it provides

automatic processing of the data thus saving time and effort.

The data analysis revealed deviations between the advanced and the

elementary students, with the latter stating less strategy use yet great

confidence in their usefulness, whereas the advanced students appeared

more conscious of the strategies they used as well as more confident

regarding their contribution to the learning procedure. The frequency of

strategy use among the advanced students did not show significant

differences between both cultural groups, Muslims and Christians.

However, despite the improvement in time achieved through the

innovative electronic device, the 100-item questionnaire (50 questions for

frequency + 50 for confidence) was particularly tiring for the less

sophisticated students.

THRACIAN OR ATHENIAN?

THE COMPLICATED IDENTITY OF MENESTHEUS, SON OF IPHICRATES, IN

NEP. IPH. 3, 4

In the final chapter of Iphicrates' biography, Cornelius Nepos relates that

Menestheus, son of Iphicrates by daughter of Kotys king of Thracians, when

someone asked him whether he thought more of his father or of his mother,

he suddenly answered that he owed more to his mother because the former

had made him a Thracian, but the latter an Athenian. This odd anecdote,

conveyed only by Nepos, has never been enough explained by

commentators. The aim of this paper is to clarify the meaning of

Menestheus' bizarre and apparently incoherent words, trying to understand

both his national and social identity. In order to do so, it is necessary to

illustrate the various and problematic cultural identities of his father:

Iphicrates was born in Athens by a humble family (Aristot. rhet. 1367 b 18;

Paus. 9, 14, 6; Plut. mor. 186f; 187 b), he was adopted by Amyntas king of

Macedonians (Aeschin. 2, 28), then he got married with the daughter of

Kotys around 387-386 B.C. (Demosth. 23, 129; Anaxandrid. F 41, II 151

Kaibel; Nep. Iph. 3, 4; Sen. ex. con. 6, 5; Athen. deip. 4, 131a). After the failed

capture of Amphipolis (in the early 360s), Iphicrates, worried about a trial

for treason after his return in Athens, decided to seek refuge in Thrace, at

the court of Kotys, who had received, probably with his own family, the

Athenian honorary citizenship (Demosth. 23, 118). During this period,

Iphicrates became king's general and won a sea battle against Athenian

captains (Demosth. 23, 130; probably around the late 360s). Hereafter Kotys

asked him to attack some Athenian outposts, but Iphicrates denied, so he

was removed from his role (Demosth. 23, 135; 156) and decided to dwell

first in Antissa and then in Drys, two villages of Thrace. Furthermore during

this period he was probably threatened to be accused of by

Timotheus (Demosth. 49, 66): this accuse indicates that the Athenian

identity of Iphicrates has changed or that it was under suspicion; the military

actions in favour of Kotys, the marriage with his daughter, and the residence

in Antissa and Drys might have been interpreted like a gradual rejection of

Athenian identity on behalf of a stronger Thracian one. From these

preconditions we can probably bring the bizarre words of Menestheus back

up to this period, when the Athenian identity of Iphicrates was in trouble.

Menestheus ironically recognized in her mother the only surviving

connection with the Athenian social identity, obtained from the honorary

citizenship of her father Kotys, and an incentive to maintain his Attic culture,

given him by his mythological and evocative name.

MYTH, BODY AND ITS TWINS:

PERPETUAL QUEST FOR POETIC IDENTITY

The current paper focuses on comparative research of poetic work of

Modern Greek poetess K. Anghelaki- Rooke in connection with the Russian

post-symbolist womens poetry of the Silver Age (1910-1930). Obviously,

the formation of Anghelaki- Rookes poetic tastes runs through the

familiarity with Russian literature and culture. Among the American and

French literatures, the Russian one seems to have held a long- term position

in the life of a poetess. Beginning from the fairy - tales of A. S. Pushkin

whispered by Russian born nanny Nina in the childhood of the poetess, this

connection was probably strengthened by the travel stories of her uncle N.

Kazantzakis, and finally grew into reader and translator preferences.

The selected for the research poems belong to different periods

(1963 2000s). In most of them, a certain part of memories and

biographical data of Anghelaki- Rooke is mixed up with feministic

interpretation of the ancient Greek mythology, gender and sexuality issues.

This modern rework of the myths as well as the production of the twin

bodies of the Other is common for both A. Achmatova and M. Tsvetayeva.

Each of the three poetesses follows separate but intersecting pathways.

The fragments of Anghelaki- Rookes imagery seem to be adequately

interpreted only in their intertextual connections, as one of the replicas in

the "dialogue of cultures (Kristeva). Forming a complex palimpsest as a

result of joint work of different texts, the structural material of the poems of

Anghelaki- Rooke requires its further decoding.
