BILL HAGGERTY
HEAD COACH
Bill Haggerty is in his thirteenth year as head coach of the Catawba Col-
lege cross country program as of 2012. Under Haggerty, the team has sent
a men’s runner to NCAA II Nationals on four occasions. In his first year, he
sent the program’s first runner, Jesse Howes, to the NCAA II Nationals.
Haggerty previously coached women’s basketball before becoming an as-
sistant with the men’s basketball team. He continues his duties as an assis-
tant men’s basketball coach. He is the only coach in Catawba history to coach in four National Events in
California, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina.
Haggerty graduated from Jefferson Township High School, where he ran cross country and played bas-
ketball. In cross country, he was a member of the team that won three state championships under
Coach Bob Weir. He later returned to his former school to help Coach Weir with another cross country
state champion.
Haggerty attended Morris County Community College in New Jersey before transferring to Catawba,
where he earned a degree in physical education. At Morris County CC, he had fast times of 4:17 in the
mile during track season and a best of 23:20 for 8,000 meters and earned All-America honors. He also
ran in numerous marathons, including Boston and New York City, with a best time of 2 hours, 24 minutes
and 17 seconds.
Haggerty was head women’s basketball coach at Catawba from 1984-87 and has served as the men’s
basketball assistant for the past 25 years. During his tenure as women’s basketball coach, Haggerty
helped turn a near-winless situation into a respectable program. Haggerty’s best year with the Lady Indi-
ans was 1985-86, when he led Catawba to a 17-15 record, setting 30 school records in the process.
A 1979 Catawba graduate, Haggerty took the women’s basketball position at Catawba after serving as
recreation director for Jefferson Township, NJ. He was also assistant coach in basketball, football and
softball at Jefferson Township High School. He was born in New York City’s Bronx, but his family moved
to Oak Ridge, NJ, during his childhood.
Haggerty resides in Advance with his wife, Carolyn, who returned to school and graduated from Catawba
in 1994. Their family includes a daughter, Amanda, and her husband Jeff with children Maya and Jonah,
a son, Jared, and his wife Amie with a daughter Emma, and a son, Travis.
