Some of the most recognizable faces inthe community may be looking colderthan heck the day after Thanksgivingthis year.
The Richland County Law Enforce-ment Torch Run organization is holdingits first Polar Plunge Friday starting at 3p.m. near Sidney’s fire hall.
“We’re calling it Freezin’ for a Rea-son,” Bob Burnison, one of the event’sorganizers, said.
The plan is for law enforcement andother individuals to get pledges from thepublic and then jump into cold water. Allthe proceeds will benefit the SpecialOlympics program.
“This is something else we’re doing be-sides the Torch Run to earn more fundsso the athletes can participate in events,”Burnison said.
Of the money raised, 70 percent will goto Richland County Special Olympics
athletes and the other 30 percent will goto the Montana Special Olympics pro-gram.
Burnison said some area organiza-tions have been challenged to join lawenforcement as participants in the PolarPlunge.
“It can be anyone wishing to help raisefunds for Special Olympics,” Burnisonsaid. “We’ve made some challenges todifferent places including the schools.”
A participant needs to get at least $100in pledges in order to take the cold jump.Burnison said the plan is for individualsto wear unique costumes for the event.
Another potential element is that peo-ple can purchase bags of ice to add to thewater.
The Polar Plunge will kick off theChristmas Stroll activities as most activ-ities start about 4 p.m.
“We want to get people out and thensupport local businesses,” Burnisonsaid.

Bamboofor men
According to legend, three young andpenniless women hung their freshlylaundered stockings to dry over themantelpiece. On Christmas Eve, St.Nicholas threw some gold coins downtheir chimney, and the coins landed inthe ladies’ stockings. And so the tradi-tion began.
To preserve a whisper of the originsof this tradition, place some gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins in your chil-dren’s Christmas stockings. In the old-en days, oranges were a rare wintertreat and many of our great-grandpar-ents were excited to receive a foil-wrapped orange in their stockings onthe big morning.
Today, that tradition can be carriedon with a real tangerine or with achocolate orange, foil wrapped andready to be “peeled” into sections.
Other surprises to keep in mind asstocking stuffers are small items thatyou usually say “no” to the rest of the
year: that little toy car you always re-fuse to buy when you’re grocery shop-ping, or the little troll dolls at thecashier’s counter of the drug store. Giftcertificates for a day of skiing or amovie with popcorn at the movie the-atre are sure to be hits as well. There’sno need to hunt down official gift cards;create your own on the computer orcraft one with cardboard and markers.
For teenagers, trial size personal careand beauty products are ideal, includ-ing bubble bath, creams, shower gels,or shampoos for sports bags. Of course, gift cards for cell phone minutes or formusic downloads from the Internetwill also make them very happy.
Don’t forget the adults in your life:you might tuck in some sample bottlesof alcohol, such as ice cider or cham-pagne, a fruit or flower scented mas-sage oil for the ladies, and a woody ormarine fragrance for the men.
Stockings can be burstingwith surprises this year
All you need is a bit of imagination as you shop for stocking stuffers.

Christmas gift exchanges can be or-ganized in many different ways, but thesecret is to choose a theme that will keepthings simple.
Have you ever tried an alphabet ex-change? Tap into the creative spirit ofyour guests by choosing a letter of the al-phabet to be the theme for the exchange. For example, all the participants mustbring a gift starting with the letter “B”.You could also do an exchange using thesame principle but this time with a color, preferably a bright one, in order to add atouch of gaiety to your family gathering.
An exchange of used gifts is sure tokeep all your guests wide awake. It’s “re-gifting” gone legit! After all, everybodyhas something they’d like to get rid of,such as that bizarre piece of potterybought on an impulse at the local fleamarket. Well, the opportunity to finallypass it on to someone else is here at last.Once your guests arrive, number thegifts and organize a draw. Donors mustexplain why they no longer want to keep
the object and the reason they think itwill better suit its new owner – you’d bet-ter ensure that all your guests have agood sense of humor!
Children could also have their own giftexchange with surprise bags filled withtoys from the dollar store, which theycan choose by drawing a number. Nowall that’s left to do is to capture the joyfulexpressions as your guests open theirgifts!
Fun ideas for Christmasgift exchanges this season Only a few hours left before your
guests arrive? Don’t panic. You stillhave enough time to decorate yourhome so that you can welcome yourvisitors into a festive atmosphere thatthey won’t soon forget.
Start by giving some panache to yourplants by wrapping the pots withpieces of fabric and tying them withmetallic or brightly colored ribbon. You don’t have any place cards ready?Write the name of each guest on apiece of heavy paper and attach themto small bells or a sprig of evergreen.Don’t forget to add a ribbon for a fin-ishing touch.
The pleasure of Christmas beginswith the eyes: table napkins tied upwith ribbons and a dinner service witha Christmas pattern are a great start. To add a simple touch of magic to yourtable, apply some adhesive stars to theoutside of wine glasses. There’s noth-ing to prevent you from using Christ-mas tree decorations elsewhere in thehome; try filling a large glass vase withChristmas tree balls for an originalcenterpiece.
Scent in your home can add a realwelcoming touch. Orange and spicefragrances are great for warming upthe ambiance of a home, so insertabout 20 whole cloves into some or-anges and place them in a pretty bowlor string them from a ribbon. As the or-anges begin to dry, they will releasetheir Christmassy scent throughoutyour house. Alternately, create yourown diffuser by simmering two or-anges cut into quarters with three cin-namon sticks, two bay leaves, 125 ml ofcloves, and a nutmeg in a litre of wateron low heat – what a heavenly scent!
Creating festive atmosphere
