What made Defiance County look at this Problem

• 4 – 100+ year old pin trusses on stone roads• Narrow roads, narrow RWs, trusses in good shape but very light

• Previous County Engineers kicked can down the road

• Load Rating gave us a deadline• Landowners were very opposed to closing roads

Solution

• Landowners supported a low cost solution and suggested bridge width as the first area to cut, but not load capacity.

• Old abutments were ugly, but did not have scour problem.  We used GRS behind them for speed and cost.

• We looked for low cost structural solutions, used steel with composite concrete decks, Force account construction

• Independent of facing: old abutment, block, sheet piling, timber, gabion baskets, etc.

Solution

• 84’x 20’ deck, • Better ride than we expected• $96,000 force account total• $40,000 materials

– $6,000 used steel beams ($2000 more in paint)– $5,000 in deck concrete ($9,000 more in rebar)– $4,500 in guardrail– $10,000 in GRS

Ohio Department of TransportationSteel Beam Program

• ODOT has identified bridges they are replacing that have steel beams

• The lengths and sizes are identified• If Ohio counties commit to use within 5 years ODOT will have the contractor give beams to counties in bid process.
