The debates and discussions aboutcomprehensive health care legisla-tion have now shifted from Wash-
ington, D.C. to the community districts wheretown hall meetings are being held. Allegedlythe Republicans are trying to turn town hallmeetings to political issues and fear, whichconfuse matters. Remember that Republicansdid nothing about comprehensive health carelegislation during the Bush Administration(2000 to 2008) where Republicans controlledthe White House, the Senate and the House ofRepresentatives.
A very good point was made by JamesMattis (San Jose Mercury News, letter to edi-tor, August 8, 2009) who said “I think all ofthe people terrified of a socialist government-run health reform plan should consider onequestion: Do you have health insurance now?Are you sure? I thought I did. Paid up threemonths worth in advance just to be extra care-ful. Called my company up in mid-July to con-firm this fact. I found out last week that mymedical insurance had been retroactively can-celled July first. The media spouts numbers of50 million uninsured. The truth is that if insur-ance companies can retroactively cancel yourinsurance, then nobody can honestly state theyhave insurance.
Opponents often point to the ‘Massachu-setts Model’ as something to avoid because ofits failure. Nothing could be more untruthfuland less factual. According to the New YorkTimes (November 9, 2009), “The Massachu-
setts Taxpayers Association, a non-partisan re-search group, concluded that the cost ofachieving near universal coverage has beenrelatively modest and well within the earlyprojections of how much the state would haveto spend to implement reforms.” This pro-gram, now three years old, provides medicalinsurance coverage to 97% of all Massachu-setts residents. This is by far the highest cov-erage in the nation achieved without hugeincreases in spending.
Of great concern to many is the amount ofmisinformation being presented by special in-terests that are well funded by those who op-pose this reform legislation. Major medicalinsurance companies are working behind thescenes and preparing to profit from the formof legislation they desire. TV ads tend to mis-inform and dip into the deep well of publicfrustration and anger, which hinders acquisi-tion of accurate information. It is increasinglydifficult to separate fact from a well-fundedpropaganda campaign.
The Obama Administration is trying to de-liver on a campaign pledge to pass a compre-hensive health bill which a) reduces cost risefor medical services, b) is accessible and af-fordable, and c) provides comprehensivehealth insurance coverage to almost all.
The proposed legislation provides for boththe private insurance option (an individualbuys it) and the public option that provides foreveryone, especially children and extends thesafety net. This is the ‘competition’ the private
insurers do not want because it forces them tocontain costs and compete with each other andthe public program. Note that Medicare andMedicaid are well operated public programswhose overhead expenses are 3% or so, andnot the estimated 25% of the private sector. That alone is enormous cost saving. The insur-ers are motivated by profit margins and do notfocus on comprehensive services to all at low-est delivery costs. Finally, no insurance denialsbased on prior medical conditions are permit-ted.
The best information on all options waspresented by the Congressional Office of theBudget (CBO) last December 2008 in a veryfactual non-partisan manner. The CBO doesnot endorse any proposed legislation. It simplylays out the pros and cons, which is useful ina time when non-partisan presentations are sohard to find. The Committee for a ResponsibleFederal Budget calls the December CBO re-port “a powerful tool for policy makers look-ing to rein in wasteful government spending, attack the federal deficit and put America on asustainable path.”
Proposed legislation comes from two Sen-ate Committees and at least three House com-mittees. Each will produce a bill that goes tothe House-Senate Conference Committee, which will produce the final version. That billgoes to President Obama for his signature. This is one law will affect all of us, so be cer-tain to give your opinion to your senators andrepresentatives.
Estimada doctora,
Buena suerte.

“These students had to overcomeobstacles,” said SAHE ScholarshipCommittee Chair Alba Cardenas. “Weare rewarding them for their hard workand determination.”
Angelica Mendoza, Gladys Gar-cia, Jose Zopiyatle, Kimberly Martinez, and Ruben Casas all received scholar-
ships to attend San Jose State Univer-sity.
“Being recognized for my hardwork means a lot to me,” said RubenCasas. “This scholarship will help meachieve my goals.”
Patricia Cortez also received ascholarship. She will be attending Na-tional Hispanic University.
“This scholarship means more be-cause it comes from students our-selves,” Cortez said. “At times it canget difficult working against the oddsof being a minority, but scholarshipslike these remind me that it is importantto keep working hard.”
The SAHE Scholarship Commit-tee, which is made up of Alba Carde-nas, Cesar Juarez, Christian Marrufo,
Delia Najera, Luis Rios, Mari Plan-carte, Margarita Medina, and Ray Sul-livan, interviewed each student prior toawarding the scholarships.
“Being part of the SAHE commit-tee meant that we had to have fundrais-ers and other events to raise money forthe scholarships,” Cardenas said. “Weall worked very hard to make this hap-pen.”
“The reason why I joined this com-mittee is to continue to inspire peopleso that they will follow their dreamsand passions,” added Cesar Juarez.“The students who received thesescholarships are the ideal students be-cause not only do they do well inschool, but they all help out in the com-munity.”
SAHE was founded in the fall of2004 at San Jose State University by agroup of documented and undocu-mented students. SAHE works to pro-mote higher education amongimmigrant students regardless of legalstatus, through activism, advocacy, community involvement, peer support, and leadership development.

Several issues have been brought tothe forefront during these difficulttimes. One of these issues is af-
fordable housing. On Tuesday, August 11, members from
the CHAM Deliverance Ministry and the Af-fordable Housing Network of Santa ClaraCounty mailed over 1,400 letters to Presi-dent Obama, calling on him to address thenation’s housing and homelessness crisis.
The letters contain personal stories aswell as pictures.
“Now is the time to fix the housingissue,” said Sandy Perry of CHAM Ministry.“Too many people are having their housesforeclosed.”
Most of the letters were written by peo-ple who were homeless, nearly homeless, formerly homeless, or whose homes hadbeen foreclosed. People of conscience alsowrote letters.
“We have been gathering the letters frompeople since March of this year,” Perry said.
The letters call for 200,000 new housingchoice vouchers every year for ten years, andcapitalization of the National AffordableHousing Trust Fund sufficient to produce 1.5million units of housing in ten years.
Since February, Congress and the ad-ministration have proposed creating only150,000 of the two million vouchers needed, and providing only $1 billion of the $150 bil-lion needed to fully fund the National Af-fordable Housing Trust Fund.
“The programs that have been adaptedhave not been effective,” Perry said. “Thegovernment has given billions to Wall Street, why can’t they give the money to ordinaryAmericans. They’re the ones that really needthe money.”

Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA)met with local immigration reformsupporters on August 6, to reassure
them of her commitment to just and humane im-migration reform. The People Acting in Commu-nity Together organization (PACT) and theServices, Immigration Rights and Education Net-work (SIREN) put the event together. It was heldat St. Patrick Cathedral in San Jose.
“Now is the time for immigration reform,”
said Fr. Jon Pedigo of the Catholic Campaign forImmigration Reform at the beginning of theevent. “The economy and justice is in crisis inour country. Immigration reform will solve this.”
Lofgren began by telling a story about hergrandfather who was an immigrant.
“Now I’m here fighting for immigrationrights,” Lofgren said.
Lofgren continued by saying that immigra-tion is central to this country.
“Immigrants are optimistic, risk takers andhard working, and that is what America is,” Lof-
gren said. She also said that she and other representa-
tives and senators who support immigration re-form met with President Barack Obama todiscuss the issue.
“He told us that he would personally be in-volved with immigration reform and that itwould come by the end of the year or by earlynext year.”
Lofgren pledged to use her leadership so thatthe final Comprehensive Immigration Reformbill includes: a manageable solution to deal withthe huge backlog of families who are waiting tobe reunited, but unable to obtain entry visas forclose relatives; a fast and reasonable pathway forotherwise law-abiding undocumented people toobtain legal status; to find a way for innocentchildren who were brought here by their parentsand have gone through school to gain legal resi-dent status; and to protect workers’ and human
rights. She also vowed to keep working with Presi-
dent Obama and Speaker of the House NancyPelosi; and to continuing meeting with the com-munity to update them on the progress that isbeing made in Washington D.C. regarding theimmigration issue.
PACT provides leadership training and ex-perience to community members of many differ-ent ethnic, religious, and socio-economicbackgrounds. Through PACT, people work to-gether to solve the most pervasive social prob-lems of our day, including: failing public schools, housing that is too expensive for thousands ofworking families, lack of affordable health care, and unsafe neighborhoods and poor services.

Rocker Radio is about to begin. As more and more radios are streaming live audio on the
Internet, Union Rocker Radio took that well into account whenthey decided to go on the air. The one thing that sets themapart from commercial radio is the experience given to theiraudience. The interaction between listener and host goes be-yond calling the request line. The viewer can actually put aface on the voice they hear through the headphones.
The equipment includes the typical mixer, microphones, headphones, computers, Internet, and you can’t forget theweb cams. The host can be seen live in action.
Ricardo “Rocky” Rivas, founder of Union Rocker TV, cre-ated Union Rocker Radio in an attempt to create an outlet forthose let down by mainstream media. “The name simply con-veys a message of wanting to unite everybody in the Bay Areaand can be understood by both Spanish and English speakers,”Rivas said.
The radio goes beyond uniting people in the Bay Area, broadcasting online allows Union Rocker Radio to spread itsmessage to people all across the globe. A first impression isimportant to many people, and this case is no different. Finally, the world can be exposed to another side of Latinos, the rockerside of them.
In 2003, the members of Union Rocker made it their mis-sion to make local bands from the Bay Area better known.Union Rocker has also pursued well-known bands and hasbeen granted interviews to later be broadcasted on the SanJose community channel 15, provided by CreaTV.
They built up their credibility with the creation of a web-site, sponsoring events and Rivas’ contribution to a local mag-azine. By 2009, the TV show and the website started toaccumulate enough followers that a radio station evolved. The first independent show aired on May 1st.
“One of the main goals of the radio is to spread the wordthat there’s more than Juanes, Shakira, Jaguares, and Mana.People should be aware that other genres do exist and hope-fully bands will be encouraged in knowing that they havesomeone to approach,” Rivas said.
Union Rocker is a mature 6-year-old project, but the radiois merely on its third month with its growing audience. Thereare 12 non-paid hosts that are allowed to let music reflecttheir personality. The new generation of Latinos in the BayArea is exposed to new and old music. All types of music inEnglish and Spanish are played. Union Rocker provides alter-native genres of Spanish music, that include, Indie, Techno,Electronic, Electro-Cumbia, Punk, Ska, Reggae and manymore; all in one radio station that has daily shows with dif-ferent hosts, but with the same objective: to expose local andforeign artists.
The shows can be heard and viewed onwww.justin.tv/unionrockertv with the hopes to further chal-
lenge commercial radio.

With signs reading “No Recessfor Health Reform,” and “OurCommunity Supports Health
Reform,” local community members, activistsand representatives gathered in front of Rep-resentative Zoe Lofgren’s (D-CA) office inSan Jose to express their concern regardingthe healthcare crisis in the United States.
“Our message is simple. Congress shouldhave no recess for healthcare reform,” said JoStein of the Congregation Shir Hadash. “Nowis the time to pass comprehensive health carereform.”
The community members are asking thatinsurance companies be prohibited from dis-criminating against you if you get sick. If peo-ple change jobs or lose their jobs, they willnot have to worry about losing their healthcoverage. Small business owners will get tax
credits to buy health coverage for their em-ployees. Finally, the community members areasking that the rising cost of healthcare becontrolled.
“People are scared that if they lose theirjobs they will not be able to pay for health in-surance,” Stein said.
Everyday, more Californians, includingSilicon Valley’s middle class and affluentfamilies are losing health coverage due to thestate’s budget crisis, skyrocketing unemploy-ment, and increasing costs of insurance. Chil-dren are being bumped off health programs asthe budget is cut again and again.
Between January 2008 and January 2009,it is estimated that 637,300 Californian work-ers and their families joined the ranks of theuninsured because of the state’s four percentincrease in unemployment.

versión B- A- N- D-A.La agrupación mexicana llamada Los Pikadientes

¿Estaremos a salvo?
