Bath Rugby’s ultimate aim is to be the best, and to win silverware at the end of each season, but it is not just about the rugby. There is a heart within the Club which beats for the people who live in and around the South West. When the players are not training or playing matches, they throw themselves into the local community, and are proud to be part of what happens off the pitch. They recognise the huge role they can play in moulding the next generation, and to help everyone involve themselves in sport. Nine years ago, our mission was to change people’s lives through the medium of sport, led by the Community Department. Headed by Manager, Jimmy Deane and his very supportive team, they inspired many people in the local community to ‘get involved’, and to take part in a variety of rugby and educational projects. This work later became known as The Bath Rugby Community Foundation, set up as a charity in 2003. The work continued in the same vein and encompassed both the charitable programmes and The Aviva Premiership’s commercial community programmes. In 2011 a change took place which separated any commercial opportunities and charitable activities within the community. The Bath Rugby Community Department deliver the commercial community opportunities for Bath Rugby Club. They deliver the Aviva Premiership projects, the rugby camps, pre-match coaching and the mascots. This is headed by Business Development Manager, John Harrison, and is delivered by a team of coaches. Ticket sales are an integral part of this department. The Bath

Rugby Community Foundation supports local young people and has been re-named The Bath Rugby Foundation. Jimmy Deane is the Foundation Manager, and works with the Trustees of this registered charity. Though it runs under the umbrella of Bath Rugby Club, it is fi nancially independent i.e. it is not funded by the Club, and has to raise all its own money to ensure the Foundation’s future. The main strands of the charity are sport, inclusion and educational projects, as well as supporting local charities such as Dorothy House, Forever Friends, Macmillan and more. The Foundation have a large task ahead of them to become completely self-suffi cient and have begun a fundraising programme. The more money they raise, the more they will be able to do their fantastic work engaging young people and providing opportunities for all.

A variety of heritage sites – including some run by Bath & North East Somerset Council – will be opening their doors and inviting residents and visitors to enjoy their unique attractions in a week-long celebration this half term.A wide range of events and activities will take place in museums, galleries and heritage sites across Bath and North East Somerset. Over 20 sites will be opening their doors to the public from Saturday 27 to Sunday 4 November to celebrate Heritage Open Week 2012..There is the chance to see archaeological fi nds from Combe Down Stone Mines and Keynsham, including Roman mosaics which have not been on public display for over a decade and Keynsham Abbey stonework. This second “What’s in Store?” event takes place at the Pixash Lane Store, next to Pixash Lane Recycling Centre, between Saltford and Keynsham on Saturday 3 November, from 11am to 3pm. In preparation for this, Bath & North East Somerset Council will be working with year 13 students from Wellsway School on a Museum Takeover Day. The group of students will ‘takeover’ the Pixash Lane Store for a day and create information panels for the archaeological objects. This will feed into their A level curriculum.Entry to the museums for their Heritage Open Week events is free of charge to Bath & North East Somerset Council residents upon production of a Discovery Card. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please note that not all of the museums are open free of charge for the whole week and admission charges apply to non-residents.

Have fun and be inspired by Heritage Open Week A family trail is included at the back of every Heritage Open Week brochure. Aspiring treasure hunters can use it to follow the trail clues around 12 different museum sites to discover a fascinating object and claim a stamp at each museum. For full details of Heritage Open Week 2012, including listings and the online brochure, visit Bath & North East Somerset Council’s website www.bathnes.gov.uk/openweek or pick up the Heritage Open Week brochure in your local library or museum.

On Friday 14th September Whitchurch Primary School children had their annual harvest breakfast at school and raised money for local charity Hop, Skip and Jump. The children were inspired by the Paralympics and so this year wanted to give the money they raised to a local organisation that helped other children with disabilities and their families.Hop, Skip and Jump is a registered charity and is entirely self-supporting; relying on donations to pay for its highly experienced and qualifi ed staff. The Foundation’s aim is to welcome to the families of children with special needs and provide unique, supervised day care and respite with support for parents and carers in a carefree environment. They provide play and support for children with a disability, life threatening illness, or any special need. They give these special children the opportunity to build confi dence, social skills and self esteem whilst providing parents, cares and siblings a place to have a well earned break. As part of handing over the money they raised Year 3 and 4 children were lucky enough to visit the Hop, Skip and Jump based at Grimsbury Road in Kingswood. The cheque was presented by the children and Carl Hornsby, Deputy Head at Whitchurch Primary School.

How to carve a pumpkin

Sketch the face or design on the surface of the pumpkin. If you make a mistake, use a damp cloth to wipe it away -- marks from dry-erase markers or grease pencils should come off easily.Use a paring knife to cut along each line. Use your fi nger to push the cut-out pieces out of the pumpkin.Using these steps and a little creativity, you can make a unique pumpkin easily. Here are some ideas for customizing your pumpkin:

• Instead of cutting a lid, cut off the entire top of your pumpkin in a zigzag line that resembles spiky hair.• Hold your knife at a slight inward angle as you cut out your design rather than cutting straight through the pumpkin. This will leave a thin rim of visible pumpkin fl esh around each hole. When you light your jack-o’-lantern, this will create an orange glow around your design. You can use different cutting angles to create patterns of light and shadow on your pumpkin’s surface.• Use leftover pieces of pumpkin to make ears, eyes or a nose. Attach these pieces using toothpicks.• Rather than cutting a face into your pumpkin, cut another design, like a cat, a bat or a message to trick-or-treaters.• You can also make memorable pumpkins by using stencils or carving your design as a cut-out.

Fireworks “Remember remember the fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot.I see no reason, why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot”

Did you know...• Bonfi re night is over 400 years old! It dates back to 1605

when Guy Fawkes and a group of other men tried to blow up Parliament.

• Guy Fawkes was not the leader of the Gunpowder Plot, it was actually a man called Robert Catesby.

• There is an island to the North of Santa Cruz called Isla Guy Fawkes...nobody knows why it is called this....maybe he planned to escape there.

• Fireworks were invented in China back in the 12th Century (AD 1100)!

• A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph, however the shell can reach as high as 200 metres.

• The worlds largest recorded fi rework display was held in Portugal in 2006 and it featured 66,326 fi reworks!

• At fi rst fi reworks were only orange and white, new colours were made in the middle ages by adding different salts. The hardest colour to create is blue

• 90% of the worlds fi reworks are made in China.• Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat

as a blow-torch.

Make sure you enjoy this year’s firework displays but please remember to stay safe.

Fireworks are fun but we must also remember they can be dangerous. If you are not going to an organised fi reworks event this year and plan to see off fi reworks at home, make sure that everyone knows all about how to stay safe.• Stand well back• Never go near a fi rework that has been lit, even if it

hasn’t gone off as it could still explode• Never put fi reworks in your pocket or throw them• Wear gloves when using sparklers and hold them at arms

length away from you• Put used sparklers hot end down in to a bucket of sand or

water• Keep pets indoors• Never throw used (or unused) fi reworks on a bonfi re• Never pick up a fi rework which may be left over, it may

still be active

Pumpkin Seed NecklaceThis pumpkin seed necklace, made in Halloween colours, makes a great accessory for Halloween and perfect for a witch’s costume! Alternatively, paint in more autumnal

colours.You will need:

Pumpkin seeds (roasted)Paint (orange, black, white and green)

Needle and thread(Kitchen foil to put seeds on while you paint them)

Instructions:Paint your pumpkin seeds in orange, green, white and black. The easiest way to do this is to put them on kitchen foil so

that they will not stick to anything while they dry.But it is a very messy job! When your seeds are dry, thread your needle with a length of thread long enough to go over your head with 3 or 4 inches to spare. Put your seeds a few at a time in a pile on newspaper or a thin sponge. One by

one push the needle down through the seed - when you have pierced the seed safely, pick it up and pull it through the

thread. When your thread is about two thirds fi lled, knot the ends together tightly. Note: you need a sharp needle for this so make sure children are well supervised or that an adult

does the threading.

Halloween Candle JarsThese candle jars are simple and great fun to make, and a

very effective Halloween decoration. But an adult will need to supervise everything to do with the

candle - including, of course, lighting it!You will need:

Jars of all shapes and sizes and appropriate candles to fi t them

Tissue paper - orange, white, purple or blackBlack construction paper

GlueScissors

Black felt tip markerInstructions:

You can get very creative making your Halloween candle jars, and we are sure you will come up with many different ideas. Basically you wrap the jar in a piece of tissue paper,

insert the candle and light it! You create the effect you want either by cutting out pieces of the tissue paper, or by sticking extra pieces of paper on, or just by drawing your design with

black felt tip marker.

Bath Christmas Market, the biggest and most beautiful Christmas Shopping event in the South West is once again set to add some extra festive sparkle to the city centre this Christmas shopping season.Quite rightly, the main attraction of this magical event is the shopping, and with over 140 stalls – including new ones in Bath Street and in Milsom Place - offering a tantalising array of gifts and Christmas essentials, it’s the perfect place to get your Christmas shopping well underway. Festive food, carols and entertainment add a really seasonal fl avour to the event, to really get you in the mood for the celebrations to come. The market is easy to get to in the heart of the city’s shopping centre, only a few minutes’ walk from the train station and P&R drop off points, and is the perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations – why don’t you make Bath Christmas Market one of your Christmas traditions…?

www.bathchristmasmarket.co.ukFacebook: Bath Christmas MarketTwitter: @bathxmasmarket

Pumpkin BagThis cute little pumpkin bag is simply made with felt and

ribbon, but it is good sewing practise for beginners. Use it for storing your Halloween treats or perhaps for giving

a Halloween gift.You will need:

Orange feltBlack felt

Black embroidery threadGreen ribbon

Instructions:Lay the pieces of orange felt on top of one another. Cut away two of the corners in a curve. Cut face pieces from black felt and sew them (or stick them) to one of orange pieces. Use

blanket stitch to sew the two pieces of orange felt together. Leave the straight edge open. About 1/2 inch in from the top of the bag carefully snip small vertical holes, leaving about

1inch between them, all the way around the bag. Starting in the front of the face, thread the ribbon through the slits (a darning needle to push the ends through will help).

Pulling and tying the ribbon as a drawstring will make the pumpkin round.

Kids love any excuse to play party games - and so they should!. Even if you are not having your own Halloween party, perhaps you can get a group of friends around to dress up and play some Halloween party games? And if you are having a Halloween party, there are some great ideas here for you!

Mummy WrapMummy Wrap is a fun Halloween party game for children of all ages.Buy some cheap rolls or toilet paper and perhaps some crepe paper streamers in Halloween colours. Split the kids up into teams of two. One child will be the “mummy” and the other is in charge of wrapping up the child like a mummy...When you start playing the music the teams can start wrapping up the When you turn the music off the kids need to stop. The team whose mummy is more mummifi ed (or wrapped) wins.Older children can have even more fun if you turn the lights right down when you turn the music on - it makes it much harder and they will get the giggles!

Halloween Relay RacesYou will need: two witches broomsIf weather permits and you can get outside for a while this is a great way to add a seasonal twist to racing while letting the kids let off some steam outdoors.Divide the party into two equal teams. Each child takes it in turns to run to the end of the garden and back while ‘riding’ the broomstick. They must then pass the broomstick to the next person in their team. The fi rst team to complete the relay wins.

Pick Their BrainsCook a large pot of different shaped pasta such as spirals or macaroni. Drain and cool completely. Place cooled pasta in a large plastic bowl and add a few olives. Then add some wrapped sweets like mini fun sized chocolate bars. Cover the bowl with material that you’ve cut into a decorative shape like a pumpkin or monsters head, or use a scary cloth or rubber mask that you don’t mind cutting in to. Once the bowl is covered, cut a slit which is just large enough for the children to put their hands through, no larger: they should not be able to see the contents of the bowl.Sit the kids in a circle and let them take turns digging into the bowl to fi nd the sweets. They won’t be able to see into the bowl and the icky texture of the pasta along with the olives will feel like brains!

Halloween Graveyard HuntDecorate your garden to resemble a scary graveyard or just add lots of scary things. You can add cut out black felt bats, plastic spiders, fake web, fake tombstone, jack o lanterns and even provide scary music...Hide prizes and treats amongst the plants and decorations and let the kids go on a graveyard hunt. For older kids you can even have a disguised adult or two hiding around a spooky corner, but please don’t do this with younger children as it can really traumatise them!

Ghost BustersFirst make a collection of ghosts, or get the children to cut out their own ghosts. Now divide the players into two groups. Send one team from the room while the other team hides the ghosts. Make sure you stipulate what level of hiding is acceptable - we usually say that some part of the ghost must be visible - and whether some pieces of furniture are off-limits. The fi rst team now returns and tries to fi nd all the ghosts. They then get a turn to hide the ghosts.Variations:An adult hides all the ghosts and the children compete with each other to fi nd them. Add a forfeit to the back of one or two ghosts (without necessarily telling the children!) Whoever fi nds those ghosts must do the forfeit before the next round of the game.Add a bonus prize to the back of one or two of the ghosts instead!

Guess the Ghost You will need: a blindfold.Sit the children in a big circle. Put some music on and take it in turns for one child to be blindfolded and walk around the outside of the circle, touching the other children’s heads. When the music stops, the child that the child is touching must let out a ghostly wail. The person who is ‘it’ must try and guess which child is the ghost. If they guess correctly they swap around. If they do not guess correctly they go around the circle again.

What’s the time, Mrs Witch? You will need: a witch’s hat and broom; a spacious room. This is a simple variation on the ‘What’s the time, Mr Fox’ game. Elect one player to be Mrs Witch. They can put on the witch’s hat and hold the broom. Each of the other players stands at one end of the room with the witch at the other, with her back to the other players. The players ask: ‘What’s the time, Mrs Witch?’ and the Witch shouts out a time, eg. 7 o’clock. The other players take the corresponding number of steps in the direction of the witch. When the players get close to the witch the witch can then should out ‘midnight’ and chase the other players. Whoever the witch catches is out of the game.

Maintain your ride!To ensure your scooter or skate board lasts, you need to make sure you maintain it.

Your bearings are the inner part of the wheels which enables a smooth ride and they need to be checked to get the most from your board or scooter. Now before you test your bearings, you want to make sure the problem isn’t dirt. Make sure all your bearings are clean, and if they’re all clean, you’re ready to test your bearings and see if there’s a problem. On a skateboard the best way to do a bearing test is the wheel roll. To do this, roll all your wheels at the same time. If one wheel stops rolling before any of the others, you know that bearing is probably ready to be replaced. On a scooter, the easiest way to test the bearing is to remove the wheel and spin the wheel in your fi ngers. If the wheel feels clunky or makes a grinding noise it is possible the bearings will need to be replaced. To make sure your scooter is safe to ride always check the wheels bolts are tight as well as the bolts on the clamp, this will stop the bars from moving. The headset also needs to be tightened and any other bolts or clamps on your scooter.

Customise your ride! There are many different types of skateboards and scooters available, and customizing your ride will ensure your board or scooter stands out from the rest.Grip tape can be changed and is the adhesive backed, gritty covering that lies on the top of the skateboard or deck. Similar to sandpaper, it helps your shoes grip to your deck. Because the grip tape sits on the top of your skateboard, this is a very noticeable way to make your skateboard look different from the standard designs.Wheels, clamps, bars and grips come in every colour you could think of and are easy to change to enable you to have a unique look to your ride!
