International Youth Day 2016

“The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving

Sustainable Production and Consumption”, is this year‟s

theme for the International Youth Day 2016, celebrated

on the 12th of August. In order to commemorate this day,

Aġenzija Żgħażagħ organised an event at the Youth Vil-

lage in Santa Venera. During this activity young people

had the opportunity to listen to testimonials, in relation to

poverty, derived from individuals working at Caritas Mal-

ta. These individuals even spoke about addictions which

influence young people and which lead to poverty. At the

same time the young people present for the mentioned

event, discussed with the Parliamentary Secretary for

Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Hon. Chris Agius

the way forward on how to tackle the issue of poverty,

especially with regards to young people.

Water safety

The Emergency Response Rescue Corps

organised a seminar about water safety. The idea

was that of raising awareness about water safety

with young people and those working with them.

The project which is co-financed by Aġenzija

Żgħażagħ as part of the Be Active Scheme, is run

by youth members of the ERRC. In the meantime

underwater clean-ups and sessions during Skola

Sajf were undertaken in order to educate the

younger generation to respect the sea.

My residency at the Virginia Centre for the Creative Arts (VCCA) was like a beautiful

dream. While enjoying the company of other exceptionally talented artists, everyone

there makes anything possible for you to work. I arrived there with some plans, however,

I was really unsure of what to expect. The six weeks resulted in the making of a lot of

work in the field of visual art and creative writing. Together with the production of such, I

took back with me priceless memories. I am so grateful for such a privilege. I wish to

thank the curator of Divergent Thinkers, Dr. Rapheal Vella, together with Spazju Kreattiv,

Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the VCCA for making this residency happen.

„Youth Local Councils form part of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ‟s

empowerment programme. They have been running

since 2009 offering young people 14-18 years old the

opportunity to practice active citizenship in their localities.

Youth local councillors are trained by a youth worker ap-

pointed by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ to assume roles which

mirror those of an elected local council and to present a

project proposal for eventual implementation, if chosen.

Applications for project proposals from youth local coun-

cils against the September 2016 deadline are now open

and can be downloaded from Aġenzija Żgħażagħ‟s web-

site.
