Japan Rises to Power日本は力になります
Today: we practice layering old & new ideas
(reiteration meets new thought)
Militaristic Japan• In order to expand, Japan needs
natural resources to keep industries running
• They don’t have any oil or coal…so they attack Manchuria
Manchuria = puppet state• Manchuria = puppet state
under Japan
• 1937: full scale attack on China–We didn’t send military,
but we offered help to China with our Flying Tigers on a volunteer basis
Seeds of War• 1938 Japan controls China• Plans to control all of E. Asia (but
most of them are European nations)
• So….they become friends withNazi Germany Fascist Italy
Meanwhile…back in the U.S.
We want to stay out of war…2 options:A. Peace
B. Isolationism
“We have a duty to stick up to
dictators… but I’m still focused on
Depression recovery so…let’s just
chill for now.”
Winston Churchill• 1940• Prime Minister – G.B• Asks U.S. for help against Nazi
Germany– They do not have cash to buy goods
The End of IsolationismLend-Lease Act– Gives President the power to lend/lease
supplies to a country whose defense was needed to protect the U.S.
SOOO……. We send ships, guns & supplies to Britain
REMEMBER?
Oops!• German subs start sinking our ships• We are now extremely vulnerable
…oops…• September 1940• Japan becomes an ally of Germany &
Italy, & continues to spread into Asia
1941• FDR stops trade with Japan• Neither side will compromise• Japan wants to control Asia without U.S.
interference so…..
PEARL HARBOR• December 7th, 1941• Japan attacks U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor• 19 ships destroyed• 2,400 Americans die

We declare war on Japan• December 8th 1941 (the next day)• Since we went to war with Japan, we
went to war with their allies (Germany & Italy)
