INTERNATIONAL JOINT SYMPOSIUM ON
HUMAN SECURITY ENGINEERING
Theme
Contribution of Geosciences for Human Security
Venue
Campus of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Bandung - Indonesia
Date October, 4 – 5, 2010
Organized by: Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB),
Kyoto University (KU), and
Kyoto University Global COE “Human Security Engineering for Asian Megacities”
With the support and collaboration of
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Fulfilling basic human needs and assuring the self-
sustainable recovery from environmental pollution and disasters in Asian Megacities have been the major challenges for several decades, and the situation still needs more improvement. Against such a background, Kyoto University has launched a new Global Center of
Excellence (GCOE) Program entitled “Global Center for Education and Research on Human Security Engineering for Asian Megacities” since 2008 fiscal year. The purpose of this GCOE program is to establish the discipline of “Urban Human Security Engineering” and to provide education for next-generation researchers and high-level practitioners for human security in Asia.
“Urban Human Security Engineering” is defined as a system of technologies (techniques) for designing and managing cities that enable their inhabitants to live under better public health conditions, and also live free from potential threats of large-scale disasters and environmental destruction. For establishing this discipline, four existing fields, i.e. urban governance, urban infrastructure management, health risk management, and disaster risk management, are
integrated into one discipline. One of the characteristics of this GCOE program is
to implement area-specific research and education. The program set up 6 overseas bases and Institut Teknologi Bandung in Bandung is one of the overseas bases.
The symposium aims to deepen the understanding of urban human security engineering and develop its policy and implementation. In addition, the symposium will contribute to strengthen a broad range of human
security network between Japan and Indonesia through the distinguished speakers who are invited.
OBJECTIVES
Key objective of the symposium is to initiate a published text book, which its title is “Contribution of Geosciences for Human security”. The speakers in this symposium are the main contributors of book sub-
chapters. The book is divided into 4 sub-topics, namely: 1. Identification and Solving Problems Related
to Urban Areas 2. Sustainable Petroleum Production and CCS
(Carbon Capture and Storage) 3. Geothermal as Alternative Renewable Energy 4. Urban Disaster Prevention and Disaster
Management.
Since many researchers from different institutions in Indonesia and Japan will gather in this symposium, it
is hoped that additional benefits could be obtained, such as:
• To broad a network for human security between Indonesia and Japan.
• To promote interaction between researchers and practitioners from both countries.
• To share and spread the recent research achievements, and contribute those to the communities e.g. as a published text book.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE CONFERENCE?
We are pleased to welcome all of researchers, practitioners, and students who are interested in Human Security Engineering. LANGUAGE The official language of the conference is English.
