Out-of-phase pulse flow performance
Ẇact hysteresis is also spanning
across full & partial admission performance curves
Current model & experiment hysteresis are spanning across full & partial admission performance curves
Instantaneous pulse pressure trace
Introduction
Twin scroll turbine is regularly deployed in pulse turbocharging for better transient engine response. The meridionally-divided volute isolates the exhaust pulse from engine cylinders of alternate firing order to preserve its kinetic & pulsating energy. Previous 1D models fell short in predicting the flow interaction between the scrolls & twin scroll turbine output power.
Mean flow path geometry
Modeling methodology
Volute geometry
Rotor (NAPL) boundary data Steady-state full & partial admission characteristics
Previous model only shows hysteresis around full admission performance curve
Ẇact hysteresis is exceeding full
admission at some instant due to the phase difference at rotor
wheel & turbine inlet
Current model predicts the correct magnitude of pressure blow down from outer scroll as in experiment
Similar magnitude of pressure blow down from outer scroll is also observed during 2nd half of the pulse cycle
