Providing the ultimate in acoustic and
vintage electric piano tone and touch, the
CP1 is Yamahas agship designed for the
demanding pro.
The development of the new CP series started with the
no-compromise CP1. This is a premium instrument
with a commitment to both tradition and innovation.
The core sound technology inside the new CP Series
was completely re-designed from the ground up.
A unique new Spectral Component Modeling tone
generation system recreates the sound of acoustic and
vintage electronic pianos more faithfully than anything
else has ever done. This new technology responds to
the players touch allowing more creative expression
than ever before possible. Yamaha even developed a
Yamahas new Stage Piano agship
special NW-STAGE wooden key action specically
to meet the demands of top pros. Simply put, this
combination of touch and tone make the CP1 the most
expressive stage piano that has ever been created.
Designed for the artist
Each individual part of the CP1 was specically
designed to reect Yamahas commitment to making
a timeless instrument with lasting value. The classic
wooden side panels and the vintage textured top call
up memories of legendary keyboards of the past. The

are all laid out for optimum ease of use in perfor-
mance. All these design elements come together to
make a stunning visual statement on stage.
Spectral Component Modeling technology
delivers expressive tone
A unique new SCM (Spectral Component Modeling)
tone generation system faithfully recreates the
17 selected sounds of acoustic and vintage electronic
pianos and responds to the players touch to provide
more creative expression than ever before possible.
The Spectral Component Modeling system starts witha fundamentally different tone generation system than
Yamaha has ever used before. By combining
Sampling and Modeling technology, it optimizes
tone generation for each instrument so that
every nuance of the players touch is translated into
expressive tone.
NW-STAGE wooden keyboard offers
matched tone and touch
Using technology and experience from 100 years of
building Yamaha Acoustic Pianos, the new 88-key
NW-STAGE wooden keyboard offers the perfect
playability for stage performance. It minimizes key-
board vibration, and the synthetic ivory keytops
feel great when your are playing. This keyboard
technology effortlessly reproduces the true feeling of
acoustic and electric pianos..
Customizing totally original piano sounds
Allowing you to freely build your own acoustic and
electric pianos by selecting different components
of piano types, ampliers, and effects, the Spectral
Component Modeling technology makes easy work
of recreating standard vintage sounds or realizing
unique, original sonic palettes. With your instruments
assembled, you can then adjust various parameters of
the physical components like Hammer Stiffness or
Stiriking Position to create an even more diverse
range of exciting piano sounds.
Convenient master-keyboard function
Using the CP1s master-keyboard function, which has
been specially crafted for use on-stage, up to four
virtual zones can be setup on the keyboard and
assigned to four different tone generators, including
other MIDI instruments.

S90 XS / S70 XS Piano Workshop
First some words about the instrument. You could call
the piano the mother of all keyboard instruments.
Despite all technical progresses throughout the last
decades the piano has never lost its charme. But there
are differences between pianos of different manu-
facturers, differences that result in different sounds.
Which is a good starting point for us.
Lets compare the properties of acoustic pianos
with the piano sounds of the S90 XS. As said above
acoustic pianos and grand pianos have different sonic
qualities and characters, which have to be captured
as samples for workstation synthesizers trying to
imitate them.
Two basic criterias are fundamental for the sound.
These are the playability of the keyboard, how hard
or soft it is weighted, and the relation of the brilliance
or amount of harmonics to the velocity. Unfortunately
these two criterias of an acoustic instrument can not
be translated into single parameters of an electronic
tone generation system, there are many more to use,
since there are as many ways to affect the sound. But
it is not how to achieve a decent imitation thats the
topic of this workshop, it is how to use it practical
so well approach this with small steps.
Lets begin with the velocity. Like on the S90/70 XS
I presume you have a weighted keyboard. Now:
Which are the parameters that determine how the
sound reacts to the keyboard? In the Utility settings
theres a parameter which sets the keyboard reaction
according to your playing style. Its calledKbd Vel
Curve and is not stored as part of Voices or Perfor-
mances but globally in the Utility mode. It is a setting
for the instrument as a whole and thus affecting the
whole tone generation system.
So if you are after a well balanced piano sound you
denitely should set this parameter to match your
playing style while using your favourite piano sound
as a reference sound. The following settings are
available: normal, soft, hard, wide, and
xed. As you might expect normalis some kind

Theres one topic in the Yamaha Synthforum
message board that is discussed on a regular
basis: The Piano sound. One reason more tofocus on it in this workshop series.

of a mean value between hardand soft, while
wide a is a combination of these two. If you nor-
mally play unweighted keyboards the settings soft
or normalwill most likely suite you best. If you are
used to play weighted keyboards or acoustic pianos,
hardor widewould be your rst selection. Once
you have found your perfect setting, you can go on to
rene the programming of the Voice. Im concentra-
ting on some of the most important parameters..
Ive programmed a Voice in several variants it is
perfect for experimenting and for putting the
following tips into practice..
You can download the S90 XS le here:http://www.easysounds.eu/Pianotest.zip
After having loaded the unzipped ALL le into your
S90 XS (note:remember to backup your own data
rst!) - or into the S90 XS Editor you will nd the
basic Voice on A01 of the Voice Bank USR1.
If you want to load it into the Editor you have to
enable the le typeS90 XS / S70 XS All Files *.x2A
underFile Open.
To keep simple for the start I programmed the piano
sound with only one active Element. Later you will
see why this is something special. For the following
examples I recommend to deactivate all effects.
Editing sounds for the S90/70 XS is heavily depen-
ding on the Editor software. For instance the Voice
Job Initializeis available only from the Editor. And
Voice Elements can only be edited using the Editor.
Thus all instructions here are describing the program-
ming via the Editor.

Amp-Velocity
This parameter denes how the velocity of the key-
board affects the volume of the Voice. A low value
denes little inuence of the velocity to the amplitude
and is therefore more suitable for pad sounds. The
higher the value, the greater the difference between
light and heavy velocity. For my Test-Voice this value
is set to 10.
Now its your turn: First, set the parameterAmp-Velo-
city Sensto 0, then increase it step by step while play-
ing on the keyboard to nd your personal setting.
Notice that a value of 0 does not completely deactivate
the velocity-sensitivity, as you might have expected.
Its because this parameter only affects the dynamic of
the amplitude the relation between the loudness and
the velocity.
But the velocity also affects the Filter and thus the
harmonic structure.
So well take a closer look to this Filter setting..
Filter-Velocity
Here we focus on the Filter and his relation to the
velocity. To understand how the Filter changes the
harmonic structure of the Test-Voice you should now
experiment with the Cutoffvalue get to know the
value range where the Voice is still sounding natural.
Remember to resetAmp-Velocity Sensand Cutoff to
the values I programmed the Voice with. Now well
make the Filter sensitive to the velocity. It is done via
the Filters envelope generator (Filter-EG or FEG).
The envelope controls the Filter in relation to the time
from striking a note on the keyboard to the decay of
the Voice. The valueEG Depth denes the intensi-
ty the Filter is controlled by the envelope. So while
Depthdenes how the envelope affects the Filter, the
parameter Vel Sensdenes howDepthis affected by
the velocity. Now decrease these values from their
original setting of 63 to test their effect on the sound.Although this is not the end of possibilities you de -
nitely should take some time on this important point.
These parameters affecting the velocity sensitivity of
Amplitude and Filter should perfectly be set to suite
your playing style

Scale
You are able to control Amplitude and Filter with the
keyboard as well. So if the sound should be louder or
brighter within a certain note range, you would use the
parameter Scale. It offers you fourBreak Points along
the keyboard letting you increase or decrease
Amplitude or Filter by 127 steps. The values between
the Break Points are dened by a linear gradient..
Equalizer (EQ)
The S90/70 XS offers the following EQs:
Voice-Element: 2-band EQ with variable
frequency or 1-band parametric EQ
Voice-Common Part EQ: 3-band EQ,
variable frequency, Q factor on the mid-band
Voice-Effect: Insert Effect VCM EQ 501
Performance and Multi Part-EQ: 3-band EQ,
variable frequency, Q factor on the mid-band,
equates to the Voice Common EQ
Master-EQ: 5-band, parametric, affects the tone
generation as a whole. Its setting is done globally
in UTILITY mode for Voices, for Multis, and Per-
formances individually in COMMON EDIT
If you want to use EQ settings from the Voice mode
in Performances or Multis you should be aware of the
following: Settings of the Voice Element EQ and of
the Insert Effects (VCM EQ 501) are adopted while
Part EQ and Master EQ are settings of the Perfor-
mance and the Multi and thus have to be set
seperately.
You dont have to be a trained specialist to use Equa-
lizers in a reasonable way, as I know from my own
experience. I have read some articles, have visited a
weekend seminar, and talked a lot with other musi-
cians and sound specialists on this topic. The insights
I got from that let me now know how to use EQs more
purposeful than simply winding around to eliminate
that Gee, thats crisp! Since EQing is important to
our topic here, I will explain the basics of equalizers.
In simple words an equalizer controls the volume of a
certain frequency range or even one single frequency. You probably know those x-band EQs with one slider
for each band a certain frequency. There are equa-
lizers with dedicated frequency ranges and so called
parametric EQs. For the latter you can set the frequen-
cy and the Q factor which determines the wideness of
the range around the selected frequency.
Theres an important rule of thumb on EQing:
Its better to decrease than to increase.
If I increase a certain frequency range this range de-
nes the volume of the signal. This results in a decrease
of the remaining frequencies, alienating the whole sig-
Part EQ

nal. But if I decrease a distracting frequency or a small
range, I can increase the volume of the overall sound.
Thus bringing up the whole spectrum and the natural
sonic texture of the signal. But without the harasser.
Thats for the details, back to our examples.
Whenever Im dealing with electronic piano sounds on
a sample basis there are one or more ranges over the
88 keys that more or less correspond to my personal
taste. An EQ can help like a silver bullet. But: How?
Lets presume the piano sound is somewhat crisp
around the C4. I would try a parametric EQ and set its
Q factor as high as possible to narrow the band of
the EQ. Then Id increase this band as loud as possible
(be aware of the overall volume). Then I would tune
the frequency by altering it. Sooner or later Id reach
the spot where it is really unpleasant to my ears and
thus have found the frequency thats to be decreased.
Perhaps you have more than one unpleasant spots
within the whole frequency range of the sound. Thats
when you have to decide, which frequency range
annoys you the most, and decrease it. And please use
the Comparefunction when altering parameters. This
simple but powerful function is within reach in the
Editor as well as on the device. Use it to compare the
results of your changes with the initial state of the
parameters.
Elements
As said before Ive have used only one Element for
my Test-Voices. However the Preset Piano Voices use
velocity switching and keyboard zones etc. to play
back different Elements depending on velocity and
note range, triggering different samples. Which drasti-
cally increases the authenticity of the Voice.
Besides the keyboard velocity sensitivity and the
Master EQ all parameters mentioned above are avail-
able to each Element which increases your possibi-
lities to tailor your personal sound but making it more

complex. So if have time and a mind you could widen
our little experiment at will.
Effects
I wont go into effects for this episode of the work-
shop. For now let me tell you my personal motto for
acoustic instrument sounds: Less is more. A subtle
reverb is sufcient for a sound that already is well
balanced even without any effect.
I would not use modulation effects on acoustic instru-
ment sounds..
Test-Voices
Just in case someone is totally lost in the parameter
jungle or needs a coarse idea of the parameters and
their effects while editing them, here are the variants
of the Test-Voice that Ive programmed:
2 without any dynamic
3 Amp Velocity only
4 Filter-Velocity only
5 widened velocity range6 sounds like a piano with a blanket in it
7 the opposite of 6
To compare these Voices you could call up Multi
number 1 in the Editor.
Open the Edit section on the right and select the para-
meter section you would like to compare. Now click
on a Track in the left Track Select section and use the
cursor keys to switch between the Tracks (to which the
different Voices are assigned to) on the right side the
differences get visible, and if you play on the key-
board they get audible, too. This is the easiest way to
compare the results of parameter settings. And if you
want to, you can switch on the effects here.
Conclusion
Im hoping that there are only few of you that are
feeling over- or understrained now. I want to apologise
if you count yourself to these few. Ive tried to keep it
as simple as possible while giving some details
But for now Im wishing you some fun and success
for your own editing sessions now you know what to
do if you get bored the next weekends.
Wishing you a good start into this brand new year and
with kind regards
Yours hp

MOTIF XS Workshop:
Creating sound libraries with Mix Voices Part 1
During the last years the topic MOTIF XS sound
management has been discussed several times.
Heres an overview of the articles so far (german
language only):

This time its about an alternative way of creating a
sound library thats not mentioned before. By using
the Mixing Voices from within the Song and Pattern
modes you are able to set up a selection of Voices
and Performances that is independent from existing
soundles.
This is particularly useful for those users who are
using the Song or Pattern mode anyway for produ-
cing songs or creating complex live settings. However
you can use the Song and Pattern mode for playing
single Voices, too.
The sound settings are done in the Mixing mode sub-
ordinated to the Song and Pattern modes.
Before we actually get to create a sound library using
Mixing Voices in the second part of this workshop,
this rst part will give you basic knowledge about the
Mixing mode and Mixing Voices.
In addition you will learn how to transfer
Performances and Voices into Mixings.

The Mixing Mode
All Multi settings for Songs and Patterns are done
in the Mixing mode, which can only be called up
from the Song and Pattern mode. Each Song and each
Pattern has its own Mixing settings which are recalled
whenever the Song or Pattern is used. The most im-
portant Mixing settings like Volume, Pan, and Effect
Sends can be controlled from the Play screen like on a
mixing desk. Even the Knob settings are available in
the Mixing mode.
All other Mixing parameters are available from the
Edit mode.
By pressing the COMMON EDIT button the COM-
MON Part is selected which combines the following
settings::
Diverse global settings (GENERAL)
Master Equalizer (MEQ)
Master Effect (MEF)
Controller-Assignment (CTLASN)
Audio In Part (AUDIO IN)
Effects (EFFECT)
In the Mixing mode you can select the Parts 1 16
by pressing the corresponding Number buttons 1 16.
For each Part theres a comprehensive set of parame-
ters, identical to that of the Parts of a Performance.
All Mixing settings become part of the Song or Pattern
via MIXING STORE.
The Mixing Job F5 TEMPLATElets you store the
current MIXING settings of a Song or Pattern as a
Template (SF5 PUT) which then can be recalled in
any other Song or Pattern. By this you can easily copy
MIXING setups between Songs and Patterns..
Furthermore the Templates remain stored, even if the
instrument is powered off.
Copying Performances into Song and Pattern
Mixings
By using the Mixing Job F3 Copy SF3 Perf you can
copy all settings of a Performance onto the required
MIXING Parts (Common + Parts 1 to 4), even with all
effect, arpeggio, and EQ settings. Those Mixing Parts
are set to Receive Channel 1 and thus can played just
like in the Performance.
By following these steps you can set individual
Receive Channels to each Part:
MIXING - EDIT - PART - VOICE Receive Channel.
Now you are able to seperately control the Parts, for
instance with the Sliders and Knobs.
The following steps instruct you how to copy a
Performance into a Song Mixing:
SONG MIXING JOB F3 Copy
SF3 Performance (Mix-Job - Copy
Performance)
Select the Performance to be copied and activate
options like Reverb, Chorus, etc. at will
Press ENTER and YES to conrm
Press STORE to save the new Mixing setting into
the Song or Pattern
The Mixing Job Copy Performance also copies the
Arpeggio settings of the Performance Parts, even their
assignments to the Sub-Function buttons SF1 SF5
(ARP1 ARP5).
These ve arpeggios ARP1 ARP5can be triggered
from the Song mode in various ways:
In the Mixing Edit mode (ARP1 ARP5)
In the Song Record mode F2 Arpeggio
(ARP1 ARP5)
In the Song Play mode (Scene 1 Scene 5)

The latter option (Song Play mode) requires a further
step after Performance Copy that stores ARP1
ARP5 as Scenes 1 5. Follow these steps:
SONG RECORD (= Standby mode)
F2 Arpeggio: Press SF1 ARP1
F1 Setup: Hold the STORE button depressed
and press SF1 Scene 1. The display reads
Scene stored
F2 Arpeggio: Press SF2 ARP2
F1 Setup: Hold the STORE button depressed
and press SF2 Scene 2. The display reads
Scene stored
Repeat these step for ARP 3 5
You can copy more than one Performance into a
Song or Pattern Mixing. By default the Performance
Parts are copied to the Mixing Parts 1 4. Use the
parameter Current Mix Part to select the Mixing
Parts 5 8, 9 12, or 13 16 as destination Parts
for the copy job.
The only limitation concerns the effects (max.
8 Parts with own Insert Effects, Reverb and Chorus
are send-level System Effects for all Parts).
Copying Voices into Song and
Pattern Mixings
One of the frequently asked questions is: How can I
achieve that a Voice in the Mixing mode (MOTIF XS)
sounds exactly the same as in the Voice mode?
On the MOTIF XS it is much more easier to achieve
than on its predecessors.
The key is the parameter Param. with Voice which
should be set to ON prior to the selection of a Voice.
This parameter can be found in MIXING EDIT
TRACK SELECT... F1 VOICE SF1 VOICE
In the Editor it is even easier to activate this parameter
(Part Common General). On the top right you can
see the activated Param. with Voice.
By using Param. with Voice you ensure that all
Voice parameters including Knob and arpeggio
settings are copied to the Mixing/Multi Part as soon
as you select a Voice.
But keep in mind the Param. with Voice function
can not work if you activate it after your Voice selec-
tion. In this case you better temporarily select another
Voice for the Mixing/Multi Part. Then re-select the
Voice you want to use to start the copying process.
The Voices Insert Effects are indenpent from the
Param. with Voice function. Since they are essential

J a n u a r y 2 0 1 0
for the Voices sound the Insert Effects A + B are auto-
matically copied for maximum 8 Mixing Parts.
MIXING - EDIT COMMON F6 EFFECT -
SF2 INS SW then determines, which Parts are allowed
to use their Insert Effects. So the Voices assigned to
those Parts are played with their original Insert Effects
A + B. By default these are the Parts 1 to 8. However
you can change this and allow other Parts to use their
Insert Effects.
It is easily done in the Editor. As you can see in this
Mixing Desk screen the Insert Effects are activated for
the Parts 1 8 in the column Ins. FX.
The System Effects Chorus and Reverb are not that
essential for the accurate sound of Voices in other
modes. Thats why you should select a setting which
suites best for most of the Parts you want to use. Each
Part then can have its own Send Level to determinethe amount of System Effects applied to it.
However you are able to use the Mixing Job F3
COPY to copy the System Effects settings of a
Voice into the Mixing. Thus making sure that a certain
Voice sounds exactly the same as in Voice mode.
Since the System Effects Reverb and Chorus are
available just once in a Mixing this is possible for only
one single Voice.
Follow these steps:
Press JOB - F3 COPY SF2 VOICE
Activate Current Mix instead of the Song set
on the top
Select the Mixing Part from which you want to
copy its effect settings
Activate the options Reverb and Chorus.
If you like to copy Voice settings concerning the
Master EQ and Master Effects activate those
options, too
Press ENTER and YES to conrm
Press EXIT to leave the COPY page
Press STORE to save the altered Mixing settings
into the Song or Patterns
Despite all the functions mentioned above: You
should not be after a perfect reproduction of Voices
and their effects in Mixing or Multi mode.
Keep in mind that a Mixing Voice with allowed
Insert Effects and activated Param. with Voice
already come very close to the original Voice.
Reverb and Chorus should always be set so that they
suite the other Parts as well..
Mix-Voices
Up to 16 Mix-Voice can be stored in Songs and
Patterns. Overall the XS can manage up to
256 Mix-Voices.
Mix-Voices are Normal Voices that are not stored in
User Voice Banks but are part of Songs or Patterns and
thus are stored with them.
This is a totally new feature. It allows 16 full editable
Voices in conjunction with Songs or Patterns.
So other than before it is not necessary to take care of
having the correct User Voices when loading Songs
and Patterns.

Only Normal Voices can be stored as Mix-Voices,
Drum Voices and Sample Voices are not allowed.
Thats why weve programmed the 8-Zone Drum
Voices (Pre8 058 to 080) which are Normal Voices
with drum sounds assigned to the eight Elements.
Thus they are working as mini drum kits. And they
can be fully edited and used as Mix-Voices.
Follow these steps to use a Preset or User Voice as
Mix-Voice:
SONG (or PATTERN) MIXING
Select the Part you want to use
F6 Vce Edit
STORE + select destination storage location inthe Mix-Voice Bank
Press ENTER and YES to conrm
Press STORE to save the new Mixing settings
into the Song or Pattern
When storing the Voice as Mix-Voice it is auto-
matically assigned to the corresponding Part. Instead
of PR... or US... the Bank will be shown as MV
(Mix-Voice).
This yet not altered Voice is now independent from the
Preset or User Voice memory and can be edited using
Vce Edit.
If a User Voice contains Samples (User Waveforms)
these are automatically copied into the Song.
Data backup
Whenever you have changed parameters in the Song
or Pattern Mixing including the creation of Mix-
Voices these changes have to be stored into the Song
or Pattern using the STORE function.
Additionally it is recommended to save changes onto
an USB memory stick (using le type all or all
song) prior to powering off the instrument.
Song and Mixing settings are stored in the ash
memory and remain there. But they will be overwrit-
ten when other les are loaded or a factory reset is
done.
If the Mix-Voices contain Samples you have to store
them onto a USB memory stick, because these
Samples will be lost when you power off your
instrument.
If you are serious with data security you should copy
the les currently stored on the USB memory stick
onto the hard drive of your computer, perhaps on a
weekly or even daily basis. And since hard drives can
go nuts, too, you should upload you important data to
an external device or server.

MOTIF ES / S90 ES / MO6 / MO8: Using 4 GB USB sticks
The capacities of USB memory sticks have
drastically changed since the MOTIF series
of synthesizers is available. When the MOTIF
ES hit the market capacities of 64 MB werecommon. Nowadays its hard to nd USB sticks
with a capacity lower than 4 GB.
This may lead to problems for MOTIF ES / S90 ES /
MO users. The 4 GB USB sticks are typically format-
ted with FAT32. But MOTIF ES / S90 ES / MO can
only read the FAT16 le system. Normally this le
system can only handle USB sticks up to 2 GB.
So it is recommend for MOTIF ES / S90 ES / MO
users to solely use 1 GB or 2 GB USB sticks. If these
are formatted in FAT32 you can easily re-format them
to FAT16. On your instrument you can use FILE F1 /
SF3 Format, on your PC you should format them with
FAT instead of FAT32.
But since USB sticks with capacities lower than 4 GB
are hard to nd MOTIF ES / S90 ES / MO users will
sooner or later be forced to use 4 GB USB sticks. All
you have to do is using a special re-formatting trick
from FAT32 to FAT16.
EASY SOUNDS now delivers 4 GB USB sticks in
FAT16 format. So if you are going to order a soundset
or an empty USB stick simply add a note that you
need to use FAT16 format.
If you are up to it you can re-format your USB sticks
by yourself. You just have to execute a DOS command
using Windows. It is not as complicated as it seems,
instead it is easy as cake if you are careful enough.
Click on START RUN and enter the following
command:
format E: /FS:FAT
Take care of the space after format and E:.
Important note:The shown command presumes the
USB stick is mounted as drive E:. If your USB stick

is mounted as another drive, correct this character,
for instance to F:. Only run this command if you
are sure which drive will be affected meaning
formatted and thus deleted!
It is best to have no other drives or USB sticks
connected to the computer during this process. And
please do not use C - which in most cases is the
system partition of your computers hard disk!
Conrm the command by pressing OK.
You will then be asked to insert a disk into drive E: (or
whatever drive letter you have chosen). Since the USB
stick is already connected simply hit ENTER.
Windows will then warn you about the le system
FAT thats to be used, which may lead to incompati-
bilities because the clusters will have a size of 64 KB.
This is irrelevant for the usage with the MOTIF ES so
you can ignore that warning. Conrm with Y and
ENTER (two times). Now the re-formatting should
be done.
If you check the properties of your re-formatted USB
stick, FAT should be shown as le system. To do
this right-click onto the drive symbol of your USB
stick and select Properties.
One nal note: You are doing this procedure on your
own risk! For accidental deletion of les we assume
no liability..
