Precautions on Applications
Precautions on Performing Secondary Operations
Precautions on Assembling
Precautions on Starting Operations1. Before operating, check the following:
Are the gears firmly mounted on the shafts?
Have you eliminated uneven tooth contact?
Does the gear mesh have a proper amount of backlash?
(Please avoid the condition of no backlash) Is there sufficient lubrication?
2. If the gears are exposed, install a safety cover for protection. Never touch gears while they are in motion.
3. The following are the gear lubrication methods for general use.
(a) Grease Lubrication
(b) Splash Lubrication (Oil Bath Method)
(c) Forced Oil Circulation Lubrication
Check lubrication after start up, sometimes, when the unit is initially being operated, lubricating oil deteriorates rapidly.
4. If there is unusual noise or vibration at the start up, please recheck the gears and correctness of the assembly. Some of the
methods for achieving noise reduction are:
(a) High Precision
(b) Fine Tooth Surface Finish
(c) Accurate Tooth Contact
1. KHK products are individually packaged to avoid damage during shipping. In case you find rust, scratches, dents or
other problems when you unpack your gears, please contact the dealer where you made your purchase.
2. Depending on how they are handled, it is still possible to deform or break gears. Please be sure to handle gears care-
fully, especially the long racks or ring gears, as they are easily deformed.
3. KHK Gears are designed so to give the proper backlash as long as assembled in accordance with the normal value
(theoretical values) of the center distance. For a pair of gears, the center distance tolerance is specified to the plus side
of tolerances H7 to H8. However, in case of using multiple gear trains, please aim for near-zero by setting to a plus-
tolerance, or minus-tolerance.4. When you assemble gears, please read through the information “Points of Caution in Assembling” on the first page of
each product series section.
1. We can not guarantee the precision of gears once a customer performs a modification (secondary operation) on any
gears.2. When you apply additional secondary operations on KHK Stock Gears, please read through the information “Cautions
on Performing Secondary Operations” on the first page of each product series section.

Characteristics of Racks & Pinions Advantages Description
Simple component including a small number of parts This simple component does not include parts such as balls or retainers, so there is no concern about missing pieces when assembling or disassembling.
Capable of handling large loads Racks with large modules can be used in large loadings.
Compact component systems can be created Allows compact component usage for light loads, while downsizing is possible, more than a ball screw mechanism.
High power transmission efficiency Approximately 98% power transmission efficiency is implemented. (Resistance against lubricant agitation or bearing is not included.)
Rapid feeding It enables quick feeding if the pinion has a large radius,
Has no limitation in lengthRacks can be joined to be used lengthwise, conversely, in case of using a screw mechanism, defection must be considered and the maximum length
should be within 2 meters.
Designed for flexibly Flexibly designed within certain conditions, materials, heat treatments, shapes et c., easily adapting to most machines.
High accuracy Applying tooth-grinding, pitch errors can be lessened
Used in food machine equipment MC Nylon Plastic or Stainless Steel products are available.
Disadvantages Description
Backlash evident For smooth revolution, essential backlash is required. In t he case of positioning forward r everse revolution, backlash is not a concern.
Lubrication required Lubrication is necessary for metal racks. For plastic racks, using light loads, lubrication is not required, however, accuracy is low.
Characteristics of Ball Screws Advantages Description
High power efficiency transmission High power transmission efficiency, exceeding 90%.
High accuracy Grinding treatment allows the creating of high-precision ball screws.
Rapid feeding High-helix lead screws enable rapid feeding.
No backlash is present Pressurizing eliminates backlash.
Disadvantages Description
Limited in length Practical limit would be approximately 2m due to occurring warpage.
Special purposes are difficult to create. Since it is difficult to create special-purpose ball screws, the machine must be set up in accordance with the shape of the ball screw.

Pitch
The reference pitch of a metric module is computed by multiplying the number of
module by π(3.14159). For example, the reference pitch of m3 rack is 9.425mm (3
x π). When using a rack and a pinion in linear motion applications, the fact that the
pitch is not an integral number presents a difficulty in accurate positioning. This
problem is solved by using circular pitch racks and pinions where one rotation of
a pinion moves it precisely 50, 100, 150, to 600. The difference in movement of
one rotation of 30-teeth CP10 vs. KSS3 spur gears is illustrated on the left.

The usual method of adjusting the backlash of a worm gear assembly is to modify thecenter distance. Once assembled, such adjustment requires a major rework of the gearhousing. The use of duplex worm gears and worm wheels allows backlash adjustmentto be made by axially shifting the worm. This simplifies greatly the assembly and mainte-nance operations.

Fairloc® is the Better Way to Fasten Rotating Components
Easy Adjustment
Will Not Mar ShaftOutstanding Reliability
Compact, Self-Contained Design
Maintains Shaft Alignment When Others Fail
Superior to Other Fasteners in High-Torque Applications
Fairloc® can be tightened and released
repeatedly without affecting its torque transmitting abilities.
After clamping the Fairloc® hub in place the unique design prevents
the central axis of the shaft from shifting its position and keeps theshaft perfectly aligned. Few other clamping methods can make this claim.
Fairloc® is an Exclusive Design - Not Available Anywhere Else
“I was so happy to fnd the Fairloc ® … it works much better than a standard set screw!” – Michael T., NC.
Customers specify Fairloc® on all their components:
gears, pulleys, couplings, shaft collars, shaft reducers and extenders, and precision hubs.
Applications include: aerospace components, aircraft instrumentation, machine tools, military re control
systems, medical devices, optical equipment, and power drives.
