Tena koutou Nga whanau We are nearly half way through the term and the children are well settled back into class programmes. I have just returned from our Catholic Principal’s Conference in the Wairarapa. It was a great time to be together with my colleagues from all over the Archdiocese. Please keep our Sacramental Programme children and their families in your prayers as preparation will soon be starting for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. We will be having a Book Week at school form the 26th-30th August. A separate notice is coming home this week. Congratulations to all our children who took part in the Cycle Ready programme last week. You all did really well and the instructors were very pleased with you. Our next class Liturgy will be hosted by Kea Class on Wednesday 21st August followed by Tui & Ruru classes on Wednesday 28th August. You are all welcome to come and join your children for these Liturgies. We offer our prayers and sympathy to the Sacred Heart College Community on the recent death of their staff member Laura Spencer. We had also been working with Laura as she was an across school lead teacher in our Kahui Ako. We also offer our prayers and sympathy to her family. We still have some outstanding chocolate and /or money which needs to be returned as soon as possible please. This Thursday 15th August we will be joining the Sacred Heart Church community to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, at 9.30am Mass. This is the patronal feast of New Zealand and is a Holy Day of Obligation. You are welcome to join us for this Mass. Our Leadership Team is beginning to look at Class Placements for next year. Please speak to Jacqui, Julius or myself if you have any queries about your child’s placement. Please ensure that if you have a New Entrant starting you have enrolled them by Monday 2nd September and if your child will not be returning to Sacred Heart next year (except Year 8) please let us know as soon as possible. Calendar Art Fundraiser: Classes are preparing the art for the calendar fundraiser. Order forms will come home with the newsletter on September

11th. The art will be on display from Monday 16th September. Orders will close on Friday 27th September (last day of Term 3) and there will be no late orders. We are also trialling a new product this year called Smencils which will make great Christmas gifts. A separate order form will come home for these at the same time. Samples of all the products will be available with the artwork.
As the netball season comes to a close in the next couple of weeks I would like to thank all our coaches and managers who have willingly supported our teams this year. Without your help our girls would not have been able to play.
Thought for the Week “The way of Jesus, which leads to peace, passes through forgiveness, for one evil never corrects another evil and no resentment is ever good for the heart.” (Pope Francis @pontifex)

SCHOOL NOTICES We have once again had an extremely close near miss outside the hall
with parents and children crossing the road NOT on the crossing. This is both dangerous for you and your child and unfair for the oncoming traffic!
PLEASE use our pedestrian crossing and remind any grandparents or family members who may be picking up your children too. Please could you let us know if your child is not returning to
Sacred Heart in 2020 (except Y8 students). The sooner we know numbers the better for 2020 planning. Thank you.
3 weeks until 2020 enrolment applications close!! Late
applications will be placed on the waiting list.
A reminder that students are expected to wear their school jersey with their PE uniforms, not other sports club jackets!
Thank you to those parents who have paid their child/rens Activity
Contribution for Term 3. Reminder statements have been sent home
showing any compulsory payments due.
Parents are still welcome to pay the Voluntary Parent Donation ($100 1st child, $75 2nd child, $50 3rd child) and the RE Resource Donation ($6 per child) to help school finances not covered by MOE funding.
PE Tops Due to supplier changes beyond our control, we have a few
slightly different PE tops in circulation. All PE tops with a Sacred Heart
emblem are acceptable school uniform.
SCHOOL PHOTOS will be on Tuesday 24th September. Information
and order forms will be sent out later in the term for class, individual and
sibling photos.
Religious Education
The Assumption Day is a special Holy Day to celebrate with our school

special patron of our tangata whenua.
You are all invited to join us at the Assumption Mass tomorrow, Thursday
15th
August at 9.30am.

We wanted to find out how much sugar was in fizzy drinks. For our experiment we had to boil
fizzy drinks. While they were boiling we had to stir them as well. When we saw that it started to
bubble, we used a teaspoon to spoon the gloopy
consistency into ziplock bags. Coke and Fanta had 20 grams of sugar which was
5 teaspoons of sugar! Each teaspoon is the same as 4grams. Foxton Fizz had 10 grams, 2.5
teaspoons. La Croix has 0 grams and 0 teaspoons of sugar.
We made a poster and a slideshow.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES It was fantastic to see a great turnout of members at our Board meeting on 31 July, where we also welcomed all the proprietor appointees to the Board. The role of the proprietor appointees is to ensure the Catholic Charter of the school is preserved and maintained – they are each appointed by the school and the Catholic Church. The school’s Board is now made up of five parent representatives (Anita McKegg, Anna Redfearn, Kate Wright, Henio Koloi and Mark Fairfield), four proprietor representatives (Genevieve Hanify, Helen Kneebone, Tane Wilson and Vaka Lemisio), a staff representative (Onieka Tristram) and Liz, as school Principal. Helen Kneebone was elected Chair of the Board at the previous Board meeting.
During the 31 July meeting, the Board: Discussed upcoming training for Board members through the NZ School
Trustees Association, which many members are taking up – as well as looking into some in-house training and discussion around the Treaty of Waitangi to ensure we are exercising honourable governance in a way that values and reflects NZ’s heritage
Discussed recent grant applications for new technology for the school Worked through the mid-year Numicon, Reading and Writing data for all
year levels. This data is positive and the Board is confident with how students are progressing – thank you to the students and the teaching staff for their great work
Accepted the July 1 school roll Worked through the finance report which is showing the school is on
track to meet budget. Discussed upcoming subcommittee meeting dates. Board members will
sit on either a policy subcommittee, or a property/finace subcommittee – both of which meet once a term.
The Board’s next meeting is on Tuesday 20 August at 7pm. Kate Wright
