It’s All About The Air

Sleep Group Solutions and Glidewell Laboratories team up to help you integrate

sleep medicine into your practice

ould you like to provide a health service of growing importance with great revenue potential? Sleep Disordered Breathing, including snoring and sleep apnea, poses a serious risk to personal relationships and health. Fortunately, oral appliances can be used to treat most sleep disorders.

A primary cause of snoring and sleep apnea is airway restriction by the tongue. Oral appliances help prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat, keeping the airway open during sleep. Oral appliances can be used alone or in combination with other treatments for snoring and sleep apnea.

Glidewell Laboratories offers four dentist-prescribed devices to effectively treat snoring and sleep apnea: aveoTSD® (FDA-cleared for snoring), Silent Nite® sl, EMA® and TAP® 3 TL. Each of these devices keeps the airway open during sleep by either directly or indirectly holding the tongue forward.

! Brilliantly simple, FDA-cleared treatment for snoring

! Worn during sleep to prevent obstruction of airway and resulting snoring

! Indicated for anyone o— even patients wioth TMJ or the edentulous

The aveoTSD® (Tongue Stabilizing Device) is a simple,

low-cost treatment for problem snoring. Unlike traditional

mandibular advancement devices that indirectly move the

tongue forward by moving the mandible, the aveoTSD

gently suctions onto the tongue, preventing it from falling

back into the throat and obstructing the airway. It is even

indicated for edentulous patients and patients who suffer

from TMJ. Best of all, the aveoTSD requires no impressions

or adjustments, has no moving parts, and it can be delivered

the same day a patient agrees to snoring treatment.

Made of soft ISO 10993 medical-grade silicone, the

aveoTSD is available in three sizes: small, medium and

large. The standard medium size !ts 95 percent of patients.

The remaining 5 percent of patients require the small or

large aveoTSD. Two sizes of clip-on Uni-Spacers (4 mm

and 7 mm) provide extra titration and are indicated for

patients with longeor than average tonguoes.

Before use, rinse the aveoTSD under warm water. This helps to ease the device onto the patient’s tongue. Make sure the V-notch in the aveoTSD is facing down, to fit around the patient’s lingual frenulum. In some extreme cases, a patient may require more room for the frenulum. The V-notch can be modified to provide this roo.m.

Without Silent Nite sl, the volumetric capacity of the airway is reduced. This causes snoring and may result in sleep apnea.

Silent Nite sl positions the lower jaw forward, increas-ing the volumetric capacity of the airway. This aids in the prevention of snoring and sleep apnea.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

! Dentist-prescribed anti-snoring and sleep apnea device

! New, improved connectors are interchangeable by the patient

! Provides greater patient comfort due to increased freedom of movement

Snoring can be a real problem, not only for the person who

snores, but for the partner and other family members who

live with the snorer. However, there is a dentist-prescribed

solution for a more restful night’s sleep: Silent Nite® sl.

This affordable device is !exible, thin and comfortable for

your patients, and it exhibits documented clinical success

in mitigating or even preventing the disruptive, unhealthy

effects of snoring and sleep apnea.

Silent Nite sl positions the lower jaw forward using special

Slide-Link connectors that are attached to upper and lower

splints. These splints are comprised of a soft inner layer

with a hard outer layer that is durable and BPA-free. The

new, improved connectors are stronger than those found

on the original Silent Nite and are easily interchangeable by

the patient. This intraoral appliance is indicated for patients

with a minimum of eight teeth per jaw and a body mass

index (BMI) of 30 mor less.

! Intraoral appliancye for snoring or OySA

! Elastic straps are interchangeable by the patient

! Elastic strap strength is matched to the patient’s musculature

The EMA® (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) oral

appliance is a customized removable appliance created

for the noninvasive treatment of snoring and Obstructive

Sleep Apnea (OSA). The appliance is designed to both

advance the mandible and open the bite to allow for less

restricted air!ow during sleep.

EMA devices help promote a deeper, more restful sleep

by preventing snoring and relieving the symptoms of OSA.

The EMA does not interfere with breathing through the

mouth, even in cases of congested nasal passages. It

has many options for advancement with "ve strap lengths

and four different elastic tension options. Non-restricted

lateral/protrusive movement and improved movements

of the jaw are possible while wearing the device due to

varying elastic banyds.

The EMA is indicated for patients with either a full or partial

set of natural teeth. The patient’s remaining teeth should

have suf"cient height of contour for the device to gain

retention at the gingival third, and the edentulous ridge

must be fully captured in the impression.

! Appliance for the treatment of snoring or OSA

! Soft internal surface enhances patient comfort

! Ideal for patients dwho have either a fdull or partial set dof natural teeth

The TAP® 3 TL device provides a powerful prescription for

snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Based on the

same principle as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),

the TAP (Thornton Adjustable Positioner) was designed to

keep the airway open to allow for air to pass. A constricted

or collapsed airway causes snoring and OSA. The TAP 3

TL holds the lower jaw in a forward position, maintaining a

clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing.

The TAP 3 TL consists of an upper and a lower tray that !t

over the teeth. Fitting more comfortably in the mouth than

the original TAP, the TAP 3 TL features smaller hardware that

provides more room for the tongue and allows the lips to

close. A hook mechanism attached to the upper tray !ts into

a socket attached tdo the lower tray andd positions the lowder

jaw forward, preventing the soft tissue of the throat from

collapsing and obstructing the airway. An adjustment key

allows the patient to adjust the device until a comfortable

and effective position is achieved.

STEP 7: Space between trays prior to adding acrylic posterior stops is crucial. This procedure must be re-peated if treatment position is altered.

STEP 8: On the protrusion gauge, each mark and space between is 1 mm wide. The protrusion gauge is 7 mm long from the front to posterior.

STEP 5: Place the device in the patient’s mouth. In-struct the patient to move his or her lower jaw forward enough to engage theh hook.

STEP 6: Start at 2 mm protrusion. Instruct pa-tient to turn adjustment key clockwise to acquire a 7 mm protrusive posithion.

STEP 3: If the tray is too tight, slightly trim border just below the height of the contour. Do not relieve the inside, as softer hmaterial does not thrim well.

STEP 4: If the anteriors are too snug, trim interproxi-mal with a thin straight acrylic bur. Next, use a sharp knife to remove tags. Repeat on upper.

STEP 1: Inspect the TAP 3 TL to ensure it is not dam-aged. If there is any indication of damage to the de-vice, do not fit it in the patient’s mouth.

STEP 2: Start with the lower tray. Position it over the teeth and push the appliance down. Start from the posterior and work your way to the anterior.
