What is new for English Learners in 2018-19

• Emerging, Expanding, Bridging
What does it mean to be classified as “EL”?
Possible Services:
• ELD classes
• Smaller class size
• Extra English instruction
• Materials personalized to their level
• ELD Aide
• Push in/ pull out program
Your child is entitled to extra linguistic support and services due to their English proficiency.
Fluency
• Facial Expressions
• Speaking, listening
• Less Formal
• Related to context
• Speaking, reading, writing
• More formal and complex
This will come together to build:
Conversational fluency, language skills and academic fluency.

• Deeper understanding of the English Language
ELPAC Assessments for 2018-19
Initial Test
• Only students new to CA take Initial ELPAC
• Occurred over Summer with appointments
• Ongoing as students enroll
• Given at site: no appointment necessary
Summative Test
• Identified EL students will take ELPAC in Spring 2019
ELPAC: English Language Proficiency Assessment for California
Why do we take an annual assessments?
Tells us how your child is progressing
• Initial data for new students
• Allows us to ensure that we are
supporting your child’s language
needs
When does testing occur?
• When they enroll (Initial)
• In the Spring (Summative)
• Will be retested annually until they are
“reclassified” (RFEP)
Reclassification
• “Graduation” from program
• Begins in 3rd grade
• Based on:
• Summative ELPAC
• ELA grades
• SBAC/ CAASPP
• SRI
• Teacher recommendation
• Parent consent
• Continued monitoring for 2 years after
“RFEP”
How do I support my child?
• Encourage them to ask for help.
• Teachers will not think less of them.
• Classmates are also eager to help
• Remind them it’s okay to speak even if they make mistakes.
• Keep communication open at home.
• Explain concepts at home to others in your native language.
• Discuss cultural differences and things they notice about their new environment.

• Collaboration
• Communication
How do I support my child?
• Teachers want to help!
• Call or email them directly. Do this first (before the Principal, or the ELD Office)
• This will not have a negative impact on your child.
• Ask Questions about:
• Curriculum
• Behavior
• Additional Help
Part 2:
Talking to teachers
How do I support my child?
TK- 5th Grade
• Start with the teacher.
• Contact the Office Manager to
identify ELD aides for extra help.
• Talk to the Principal if you feel
your child’s needs are not being
met.
6- 12th Grade
• Start with the teacher.
• Contact the Academic Counselor to
discuss placement in an ELD class.
• Talk to the Assistant/ Associate
Principal if you feel your child’s
needs are not being met.

Checking on Progress
and Homework Help
• Edlio

• “Academics”
• “Classes/ Homework”
• Teachers use this to post homework,
worksheets, and class updates
• Check this daily.
• Aeries
• Check this for grade updates
• You can directly email teachers here.
• You can sign up for notifications
when there has been an update.

Getting involved in ELAC meetings
What is it?
• English Learner Advisory Committee
• Parent committee on campus
• Elects representative to attend DELAC meetings
• Acts as liaison between DELAC and ELAC
• Only DELAC representatives may vote
All are welcome to attend, but you need to be selected by your school site to serve as a DELAC representative.
Why is it important?
• Parent input
• Directly effects student programs
Talk to your Principal if you are interested.
