THE HORRORS OF LANDFILLS

Slide show made by Makaio Garrin, Helene Carter and Kai TurnbullGrade 5

If the population keeps growing, this is what our planet will look like.

IS THIS WHAT WE WANT???

    WHY ARE WE DOING

THIS?

There are a lot of people producing a lot of  waste

"Why?"

Waste Management in the BVI

A Graph To Show The Growth Of Waste Within The BVI In 1995-

2005

Waste Management in the BVI

●The incinerator we have is too small - thats why we open burn our trash

●St John is complaining about the emissions

●Tortola, is 21.5 square miles and hilly

●Not a lot of space to put a landfill so Government chose an incinerator

Waste Management Problems in the BVI

●Visitors and residents produced 100-150 tons per day in season

●Incinerator on Tortola can only burn 40 tons per day

●Cannot handle glass or metals or hazardous

substances  ●Except waste is burned behind the incinerator

causing toxic emissions  ●New incinerator will burn about 100 tons per day.

Landfills in the BVI

●4 unlined landfills on Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke and Anegada.

●Environmental impacts from leachate ●Virgin Gorda state land + 10 yrs●Jost Van Dyke private land - 1 yr ●Anegada state land 20 years. Public pressure to

relocate away from residential zones. ●Tortola – current site full ●New landfill on Tortola would require special

engineering US$12 million 5 yrs

WE NEED TO ACT NOW!

WE NEED TO REDUCE,REUSE AND RECYCLE

REDUCE by...●Composting at home and school

 ●Grow your own vegetables

 ●Say "NO" to styrofoam

●Take your own reusable bags to the store

 ● Refill water containers

●Go paperlessothink before you printouse evite.com

REUSE by...●Using reusable oplatesocups ocutlery oshopping bagsowater bottles

●reusing wrapping paper and bags ●reuse old jars for freezing food

 ●using both sides of paper

●Donating things you no longer need to charity

- You can use the same plastic bag over again instead of throwing it away.

RECYCLE

There is currently no recycling in the BVI.  What you can do is: ●write a letter to Government requesting recycling

●support non profit Green VI who are working on a

recycling plan www.greenvi.org

What we did!

Landfill group actions

To see how much Syrofoam waste Cedar produces we collected andsorted lunch waste for 4 days

Action 1: Styrofoam art

  In four days we

collected 59 Styrofoam products

 That is about

3,000 styrofoam

products in a school year!

Our Sculpture

Action 2: Make Cedar Styrafoam free

●The action will be finalised next year

●Carol has already switched to plates for high school - thank you!        BEST OPTION!!!

●Replace the styrofoam containers with biodegradable

products.

●Greentech donated selection for lunch ladies to test

●Assess product and price

●We hope this action is successful and that it can be shared with other schools.

Biodegradable containers●cause less emissions when burned

 ●do not become litter

 ●can be composted

 ●contain no harmful chemicals

THINK OF HOW YOU CAN HELP

AFTERBEFORE

BE A SUPER HERO

EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO FOR THE EARTH IS

BIG....

Remember ....               Going Styrofoam Free

HELP THE EARTH AND YOURSELF
