Training
• Act of increasing the knowledge and skill of a worker for doing a certain job.
• Flippo: organized procedure by which knowledge and skill of an employee increased for doing a particular job
Importance
• Reduction in cost of production:• Max. utilization of materials and machines• Min. accidents• Stability in org- reduces labor turnover and
absenteeism• High morale and motivation• Improvement in quality and quantity of prod• To find the efficiency of empl• Min need of supervision
Process of training

Types of training
1. Refresher training: to refresh new technology ex. Computer software, new machines
2. Orientation training: for new employee3. Promotion training: to perform higher level
jobs4. Remedial training: to correct the mistakes5. On the job training: to reduce accidents,
waste and inefficiency
Training for operative empl. In industrial activities
A. on the job training: worker is trained in a real work situation
• - handling tools, operating machines etc• Adv.: • active part of supervisor• Cheaper and convenient • Realistic training• Disadv.: • Dependent on supervisor• Time consuming• No uniformity
B. Vestibule training:• Training school• Artificial environment of material /equipment
and work condition
• Adv.:• Standardized method for a job• Fully concentration on learning as there is no
pressure to complete the task• Removes initial nervousness• Disadv.:• Expensive• Production stops
• Apprenticeship:• For technical fields. I.e., fitter, carpenter, electricians,
welders, mechanists• Also provides classroom training to acquire skills• Adv.:• Trainees receive stipend• Provides intense knowledge and skills• Disadv:• Time consuming • No assurance about continuity of the empl after training
• Special courses/ classroom training:• Kind of education• Given to skilled and technical personnel• To bring the balance between theoretical and
practical knowledge.• Direct method of instruction• Used for large group of trainees• Costs and time may be reduced
Executive Development/Management Dev.
• Process of growth and dev. By which managers develop their abilities
• Combination of instructions + actual job exp.• Improving performance by giving them
opportunities for growth and dev.
• Flippo: M.D. includes the processes by which managers and executives acquire not only skills and competency in their present jobs but also capacities for future managerial tasks.
Techniques of executive dev.
A. On the job Training: 1. Coaching: superior acts as a coach- Immediate superior guides the trainee- Trainee serves as an assistant to the senior officer
to fill up the future vacancy2. Position rotation:- Rotation of trainee from one job to another on
regular basis to broaden the knowledge and skills- Boosts interdepartmental cooperation
3. Special projects and task forces:- exe. Is assigned a special project 4. Understudy:- Full responsibility of the exe. Is held by his superior5. Selective readings:- By reading selected professional books journals,
latest dev. Research findings6. Committee assignment: - Exe. Is placed on a committee, he has to learn by
committee discussion meetings
• Multiple management:- Advisory committee of mangers study
problems of the company and make recommendations to higher management

innovations4. Special courses:- AMA5. Simulation- Real org. situations6. Role Playing- Playing a role in a dramatic situation related to
work
7. In basket: - variety of situation is represented which an
executive would deal- Responses are taken down in writing and then
analyzed8. Management games:- Exe are trained to take decision under
uncertainty- Business problems are created
