Connection and the master classes

A RECORD YEAR FOR PIXEL ANIMATIONThe sixth Pixel Animation was held from October 24 to 30, 2016, at the Québec City Convention Centre and Cinéma LE CLAP.

Pixel Animation, Canada’s largest gathering of multi-screen animation contents (film, television, web, multi-platform, video games, special effects), presented three simultaneous activity streams aimed at producers, distributers, investors, professionals and the general public.

The professional stream of Pixel Animation and Cartoon Connection, which ended on October 27, had a banner year and record attendance.

A total of 451 participants took the various master classes and attended networking events: a record! Craftspeople from 24 countries presented some 200 projects at over 1,000 professional one-on-one meetings. And that’s not all, because Pixel Animation’s general public stream continued till October 30 with screenings of four magnificent animated films.

In a friendly atmosphere combining one-on-one session meetings and high-level international presentations, broadcasters, production, sales and distribution companies of all sizes, known or emerging, made human and professional connections that generated converging coproductions and international funding and distribution opportunities. CCC is a coproduction of PIXEL Québec and CARTOON from Brussels, more specifically the European Association of Animation Film.

CARTOON CONNECTION AWARDS - THE WINNERSCartoon Connection was founded to facilitate the circulation of animated works among the countries represented. The Cartoon Connection Awards go to two 100% Canadian projects selected to be presented at the prestigious Cartoon Forum and Cartoon Movie in Europe. This year, unusually, three projects seduced the panel: American Goulasch by Guru (Toronto), which also won a $5,000 grant from the Bell Fund; Butterfly Tale by CarpeDiem (Montréal) and Le trésor de Morgä by 10th Ave Productions (Québec City).

MORE THAN 1000 ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGSTHE BEST PLACE FOR PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS

Producers, broadcasters, and distributors of animation content, and even a few artists, spent a day and a half getting together to spark or strengthen their professional connections. It was an exhausting time, but oh so productive. Many participants were able to meet more potential business partners in a few hours than they otherwise do in a year.

LAUNCH OF A HOME-GROWN MULTIPLATFORM SERIES

Presented by

MaXi’s interactive cocktail party brought together all the participants in the Cartoon Connection and master classes streams of Pixel Animation. It was followed by the premiere of MaXi, a multiplatform animated series created by Frima in collaboration with Groupe Média TFO.

A number of children attended the screening of the first two episodes. Afterwards the actors, the original Francophone voices for the series, were on hand to answer questions from the audience during a panel discussion.

SCREENING OF 4 ANIMATED FEATURE FILMS AT CINEMA LE CLAPA NEW ADDITION IN 2016

Pixel Animation and Cinéma Le Clap presented four magnificent animated films from October 28 to 30. The general public stream, a new addition in 2016, expanded Pixel Animation’s scope and prestige. Attendance was more than satisfactory and the experiment was a success. It will be repeated next year with increased programming and better visibility.

A HALF-DAY WISELY SPENTThe speakers and panel discussions at Cartoon Connection were designed to provide useful information to help producers make their efforts as successful as possible. This year, sessions included hints on navigating the various editorial rules and policies of broadcasters in Canada and Europe.

AT THE AQUARIUM OF QUÉBECCartoon Connection ended its 2016 eddition with a delicious breakfast and a visit of the Aquarium sites. Many participants reconnected with their inner child. But then again, when you work in animation your inner child is never very far.
