2009–2014 Sc.D. graduate student.Thesis title Mesoscale eddies, Rossby waves and the spectra observed from satellite altimetryAdviser Prof. Dr. Paulo Simionatto Polito

• Signal de-noising using two-dimensional discrete wavelet (DWT-2D) filter • Geometric feature detector

to extract signals associated to meso-scale eddies • Distinction between eddies and planetary waves

using higher resolution global sea level anomaly (SLA) maps.

Main results: • Preference for eddies to occur in mid-latitudes, especially in the major current regions

• Anti-cyclonic eddies have almost twice the radius of cyclonic eddies • Eddy-like and wave-like spectra

show that most variance of SLA is in the non-dispersive region of the theoretical linear Rossby wave

spectra.

and particularly in the Abrolhos archipelago region, BrazilAdviser Prof. Dr. Paulo Simionatto Polito

anomalies (SLA) • Development of two-dimensional discrete wavelet (DWT-2D) filter to extract west-

ward propagating features associated to planetary waves • Analysis of spectral and spatial variability of

filtered signal in the Atlantic Ocean.
