Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma,
It is without hesitation that I offer my highest recommendation for Kevin Earnest in his
pursuit of National Vice President of Communication and Recognition for Tau Beta Sigma.
I had the opportunity to work with Kevin during his tenure as the NCD Vice President of
Special Projects. He proved to be highly proactive and successful in this position offering
suggestions and input that could easily be capitalized on.
Kevin integrated the national Scouting for Music program into our district convention by
bringing local Girl Scouts to our convention to earn their music badges. He was instrumental in
coordinating logistics and manpower, making every effort to involve as many chapters in our
district as he could.
Kevin was also responsible for the transition of our district publication, The Kadenza,
from print format to an online format. Though the process for the transition was initiated prior
to Kevin taking office, he was the one who ultimately streamlined processes to make the new
format functional and well promoted.
Overall, what strikes me most about Kevin is how he exemplifies generosity of mind,
heart and hand. Kevin traveled often during his time in office getting to know sisters from
across the district and even across the country. He is kind, considerate and one of those friends
who would do anything just to make you smile.
It is Kevin's intelligence, dependability and loyalty that make him an outstanding
candidate for Vice President of Communication and Recognition. Please do not hesitate to
contact me should additional information be necessary.

Dear Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma,
I am privileged to provide my strong support for Kevin Earnest as National Vice-President for
Communication and Recognition this biennium. I believe that Kevin possesses several unique attributes that
will make him exceptionally effective in this office. Kevin is an extremely effective problem solver and a
capable leader who quickly adapts to the situations he is placed in and to the challenges he takes on. In a role
like VPCR, where there has been a historically high chance of failure, Kevin will be able to utilize these skills to
ensure his success.
Over the past few years, I have seen Kevin take on many new challenges in his life including serving
as the North Central District Vice-President of Special Projects and becoming a graduate student in Civil
Engineering at Purdue University. Every time he takes a step into a new project, role, or phase of his life, he
approaches it with quiet determination and focus. While serving as the VPSP for the NCD, Kevin
wholeheartedly fulfilled his dutiesquietly and diligently accomplishing the less glamorous aspects of the
role and passionately finding new and innovative ways to further the mission of Tau Beta Sigma.
At the 2010 NCD Convention, Kevin designed and ran a Scouting for Music workshop like our district
had never seen before. Kevin combined the educational aspect of district conventions with a National
Program and an opportunity for community service. Kevin involved Sisters from across the NCD in actually
running the workshop which provided training opportunities that enabled each of us to take this program
back to our own chapters, and the Girl Scouts in attendance had a wonderful time meeting the requirements
for their Music Badge. The National Council recognized Kevins innovation and dedication as VPSP, along with
his untiring and unwavering dedication to Tau Beta Sigma, through awarding him with The Baton.
This past spring, I threw Kevin a curve ball by asking him to serve as the Advisor for the NCD
Sisterhood & Spirit Committee. Although this committee was in an area where Kevin had very little official
previous experience, I knew that he would be able to take on any challenge I gave him and perform at a very
high level. This adaptability will help Kevin to acclimate to the demands of serving on National Council
quicklylessening the time spent getting used to being a National Officer and increasing the time Kevin will
spend accomplishing his goals.
This summer, I will be looking for a VPCR candidate who is determined to make the jump to serving
on the National Council, who has the diligence to perform the
less glamorous aspects of the role, and who has the ingenuity to
find better ways to accomplish the mission of Tau Beta Sigma. I
am confident that Kevin is an excellent choice for National VPSP;
please join me in supporting him.
Sincerely submitted In The Bond,
Sky Buffington

Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma,
I am writing on behalf of the Beta Sigma chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Purdue University. We would like
to express our wholehearted endorsement of Kevin Earnest for the position of National VPCR.
On a personal level, Kevin is a fantastic colleague and sister. The first time I met Kevin was at the formal
rush that convinced me to join Tau Beta Sigma. He drove several hours to be with us, to meet potential
new sisters, and to share with us the importance of sisterhood even across state lines. He brought with
him a piece of his chapters history and made it a point to talk with each of the potential candidates who
attended the event. I have been impressed by Kevins ability to connect personally with people no
matter their background, major, or school, and meeting him that day helped to solidify my decision to
join Tau Beta Sigma.
He carries this desire to connect with people into everything he does, which is a part of what makes him
an absolute pleasure to work with. Kevin was elected the North Central District Vice President of Special
Projects and spent his year in that office traveling to almost all of the chapters in the district, talking to
them about how to best improve the districts programs, and getting sisters involved with the district in
unprecedented numbers.
Kevin is a wonderful communicator. He created the district VPSP website when he held that position,
which compiled all of the information relating to district projects into one easy location where everyone
could find it. This turned out to be fortunate for the district when our website went out of commission
this year because we still had the important information on monetary awards that would fund our
service projects. In addition to that, he was a big part of the re-establishment of our district publication,
the Kadenza. When he was elected the VPSP, the district had decided to change the Kadenza from a
print version to an online form, similar to a blog. He heard what the district wanted and embraced the
change, working with his counterpart in Kappa Kappa Psi to create a smooth transition to the new
format. The Tau Beta Sigma involvement with this project rose significantly under his leadership, and
continues to rise to this day.
Kevins achievements on the district level since our chapter really started getting to know him are
numerous and impressive. His drive for service to collegiate bands and Tau Beta Sigma is very strong.
Our chapter has extended him an honorary membership in part due to his drive for service, but Kevin
also is a role model for all of us in the way he exemplifies the Five Qualities and Eight Essential Factors
that we look for in our members. From his loyalty to the sorority to his cheerful demeanor to his
tolerant and generous leadership, Kevin is an individual who everyone in Beta Sigma admires. We are
honored to have him as a part of our chapters history and know he will do great things for the sorority
for the rest of his life. If you have any other questions or would like to speak to me further regarding
Kevins qualifications for this position, feel free to contact me using the information below. The Beta
Sigma chapter thanks you for your consideration of Kevin for the National VPCR.
Respectfully Submitted In The Bond,

June 15, 2011 TO: Whom it may concern Re: Recommendation for Kevin Earnest Ladies and Gentlemen: I am very pleased to write this open letter of recommendation for Kevin Earnest. I am currently the Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at South Dakota State University (SDSU). I have known Kevin for approximately the past five years both as the department head at SDSU and in my former position as a professor in the Civil Engineering department at Ohio Northern University (ONU). I would like to speak to several endeavors that Kevin has been involved in for both institutions. While I was at ONU, I taught the environmental engineering courses in the Civil Engineering program. I had Kevin as a student in my introduction to environmental engineering and science. He was definitely in the top 5% of the students in the course, and normally I expected him to be in the top one or two students in performance. I also specifically remember Kevins participation in instrumental music during the academic year and committed participation in the marching band activities. Kevin maintained contact with me after I left ONU to be the department head at SDSU. Upon graduation from ONU he applied for a National Science Foundation grant sponsored summer research experience for undergraduates at SDSU. During the summer of 2010, Kevin participated in field research that I was developing with Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (PRIR). Kevin worked independently to develop a watershed sampling plan for a watershed on the PRIR. Also, he developed GIS based mapping for the sampling plan, and conducted laboratory analyses for digestion of samples for future heavy metals analysis. Additionally, he worked with SDSU grad students to prepare stream samples for analysis of human pharmaceutical compounds as part of another research project. I especially appreciated Kevins flexibility in working with me on the PRIR in very remote and variable field conditions. Kevin also, developed a poster presentation for the watershed heavy metals analysis project for a future conference presentation that we anticipate using upon completion of the sample analysis. Kevin initiated a Masters Degree program of study in Environmental Engineering at Purdue University. Hopefully, I have been able to convey through these brief examples that Kevin has several characteristics that will lead him to be successful in graduate school and in his chosen professional communities. I found him to be a continuously self motivated individual with strong capacity to learn new technique with little guidance from others. He quickly developed a plan for success and maintained sustained involvement in all of the projects that I worked with him on this past year. He is a strong leader and a collaborative team worker. He has successfully researched and implemented working solutions to environmental problems in a less than desirable environment. I find the quality and continuity of his work to be above what I typically see from masters degree level students. I am confident that he will be a major contributor to the success of whatever organizations he chooses to support in the future. Sincerely, ____________________________________ Dr. Bruce W.
