40 OSIA Standards & Technology Review OSIA S & TR 1. 서론 최근 증강현실 기술에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있는 추세이다. 증강현실이란 1992년 Tom Caudell에 의해 처음 사용된 말로써, 지금의 증강현실과 같은 개념으로 실 세계의 영상 위에 가상으로 만들어진 영상을 덧입 히는 방식[1]의 혼합 현실을 말한다. 이 증강현실이라는 단어가 처음 사용되는 시기에는 증강현실의 효율성 측면에 대한 찬반논란이 있었으나 점차 혼합현실에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 Paul Milgram이 1994년에 현실 (Reality)과 가상 (Virtuality) 사이의 연속체계(Continuum)를 정의함에 따라, 현실에 가까운 혼합현실을 증강 현실(Augmented reality), 가상에 가까운 혼합현실을 증강가상(Augmented virtuality)이라고 부르게 되고 증 강현실이 하나의 독립적인 분야로써 인식된다 [2]. 이후 1997년도에 처음으로 나온 증강현실 기술의 동향조 사에서 Ronald Azuma가 증강현실의 3가지 특징을 정의 함에 따라 증강현실 분야가 체계를 갖추게 되는데 이 세 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현실과 가상이 결합되어야 한다. 둘째, 실시간으로 동작 및 상호작용이 가 능해야 한다. 그리고 셋째, 3차원으로 현실 세계에 정합이 되어야 한다는 것이다 [3]. Azuma의 증강현실에 대한 정의는 Milgram의 정의와 함께 현재까지 받아들여지고 있는 증강현실에 대한 가장 명확한 기준이 되고 있는데, 최근 급증한 증강현실의 관심에 따라 최근 이 ‘증강현실’이라는 키워드에 대한 정의와 기술 그리고 동향에 대한 관심 역시 급증하고 있는 추세이다. 이러한 사용자들의 늘어난 관심은 구글(Google) 검색 순위에 기반한 동향 분석 그래프에 잘 나타난다.
