The batt le near lake Balaton is of a special interest as the last large defensive operat ion ofthe Soviet Army during the Second World War. The batt le consisted of two phases. During the f irst phase the Soviet Army repulsed threeGerman tank counter-at tacks and then stopped the counter-of fensive of the German tankforces. The characterist ic features of the batt le were the following. The Gremans widely used theirtank forces, of ten without adequate infantry support . The Soviets had no large tank forces onthis sector of the f ront. The enemy blows were repelled by ant i-tank art illery which usually hadno infantry cover. The Soviet tanks were not numerous and were used mainly f rom ambushposit ions. The defensive works of the Soviet Army were up to 50 km in depth and wereconstructed well in advance of the German advances. These fort if icat ions were much weakerthan the Soviet fort if icat ions in the Kursk batt le.
