israel as a part oF the identity oF aMerican Jews - February 18, 2016micah GOOdmaN - the relationship of american Jews with israel is more than a question of opinion and policy. at its source, it is a question of identity. israel is more than what american Jews think about it a part of who they are. as a result, changing attitudes toward israel is making a change in the attitude of american Jews. during our session we will probe that change.

israel and world Jewry: FroM crisis to covenant - February 25, 2016dONNiel hartmaN - Upon exploring the foundations of Zionism, we find two competing strands - one focused on survival and the other focused on culture. JOSHUA NELSON with theKOSHER GOSPEL BAND

You may have never heard of “kosher gospel” music before, but the inspirational performance of Joshua Nelson, the creator of this style - along with his special guests and the B’nai Torah choir - will surely call out to your soul. Kosher gospel is the marriage of Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of American gospel music. Such soul-inflected vocalizations filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua Nelson attended as a child with his family, observant Jews who traced their lineage back to Senegal. The addition of a brass band for this performance will take this artform to a new and exciting place.

Joshua Nelson was inspired to become a gospel singer after he heard an album by gospel superstar Mahalia Jackson when he was just eight years old. Nelson combined Jewish liturgical lyrics with the soulful sounds of American gospel music, sparking a revolution in Jewish music. Hear “The Prince of Kosher Gospel” perform his original compositions with his band and a special brass section in this spiritual, uplifting concert.
