Brethren (brothers and sisters), see with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand! As many as desire to make a good showing in the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For not even those who are circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ1, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation2. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 1 How does one boast . . . in the cross? Throughout the history of the Church, Christians have preached the Cross, displayed the Cross in their homes and altars, venerated the Cross in the liturgy, and signed themselves with the Cross in worship of the Holy Trinity and during times of fear or temptation. 2 The new creation is our way of life in Christ Jesus. 3 Abraham's bosom means heaven. The Lord told this parable: “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.3 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

“Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’4

Fathers see this as illustrating the state of his merciless soul, buried by the pleasures of the flesh. He was already buried in life by “couches, rugs, furnishings, sweet oils, perfumes, large quantities of wine, varieties of food, and flatterers” (JohnChr). That the rich man remains unnamed indicates that he is ultimately forgotten (see Ps 9:6). 4 The rich man's appeal to Abraham as a spiritual father is not rejected. Rather, Abraham accepts this role, calling the rich man son and showing himself to be compassionate even towards the most wretched of men.

The great gulf is not a geographical divide, but the complete separation between virtue and wickedness, a separation that cannot be overcome after death. Note that torments have not changed the rich man's heart, as he still sees Lazarus as a servant existing for the sake of his own comfort. Finally, this account by Christ reveals the communion of the saints: a man, not even a believer, calls out from Hades and converses with Saint Abraham! 5 Some Fathers see this parable being set after the final judgment, citing the punishment and reward being received by the two men respectively. Others see this parable set at a time after death but before the second coming of Christ, as evidenced by the man interceding on

behalf of his brothers who are still living. The torment he is experiencing would be but a foretaste of his final state. From this perspective, we learn that souls of the departed have awareness of and concern for the state of those still alive on earth (see 9:30, 31; 2Mc 15:12–16; Mt 2:18), but also that the intercessions of a wicked man are heard, but avail nothing (contrast Jam 5:16). 6 “The ignorance of Scripture is a great cliff and a deep abyss. It is impossible for anyone to be without benefit if he reads continually and with attention” (JohnChr). Furthermore, the rebellious were not persuaded even when people did rise from the dead (Mt 28:11–15; Jn 12:9–11).

Lazarus and the Rich Man

What we do to others we do to God (because of

God’s association with us in the Incarnation of

Jesus). What we do to others we do to Jesus. We

could say that in many different ways the Gospels

put this teaching before us and once again today the

Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-

31) asks to reflect on this amazing fact. What we do

to others we do to God. What we do to others we do

to Jesus. The rich man is not condemned for being

rich. Instead he is condemned because he did not

show charity to a poor man called Lazarus. Lazarus

wanted just the scraps from the rich man’s table but

we are given the impression that he didn’t receive

even the scraps.

Notice that there is no mention of poor Lazarus

being envious. Envy doesn’t enter into the parable at

all because in fact the rich man had nothing to make

someone envious of him. He had riches, yes, but not

true riches. This is clearly seen when both men are

in the next life and then we see who has true riches,

poor Lazarus, and the rich man has nothing. Even

though the rich man appeared to have everything

one could want he may have felt quite empty.

Money cannot buy everything. This is how Pope

Benedict comments on this parable in his book Jesus

of Nazareth (p. 215).

The Lord wants to lead us from foolish

cleverness toward true wisdom; he wants to teach us

to discern the real good. And so, we have good

grounds, even though it is not there in the text, to

say that…the rich glutton was already an empty-

hearted man in this world, and that his carousing

was only an attempt to smother this interior

emptiness of his. The next life brings to light the

truth already present in this life.

It is selfish spending gone out of control that is

critiqued by Jesus in his parable. Jesus’ teaching

asks us to show solidarity and not selfishness. This

parable is spelling out of what Jesus means when he

says we must love our neighbor as ourselves. We see

the same insensitivity of the rich to the situation

around them in the first reading also (Amos 6:1,4-7).

The Lord said through the prophet Amos that the

rich were living lives of luxury and ignoring the

collapse of Joseph around them, i.e. ignoring the

collapse of Israel (Joseph=Israel). Once again, the

problem is not the rich being rich, because we see

examples in Scripture of the rich doing good. The

rich man, Joseph of Arimathea, went to Pilate after

Jesus died and asked for the body of Jesus (Matt

27:57). Nicodemus brought a huge amount of myrrh

and aloes to anoint Jesus’ body after he died

showing that he also was a rich man who wanted to

use his wealth appropriately (John 19:39). We also

see a rich tax collector named Zacchaeus undergoing

a conversion experience (Luke 19:1-10). What is

being critiqued in the Scriptures today is when we

ignore what is happening around us. Indifference to

those who are in need and who are suffering is what

the Scriptures put before us today as sinful. We

could put it another way; we cannot go to God

without our brothers and sisters around us who are

suffering.

Lazarus continues to knock at our door and so

the Church has many initiatives to help the poor.

How many hospitals, schools, hospices, shelters

have been founded by the Church to heed the call of

Christ to care for the poor. Saints in this country are

known for their care for the poor. In first place we

think of the saint nearest to us, St. Elizabeth Ann

Seton. She founded a convent in Emmitsburg which

became the Sisters of Charity, and she founded a

Catholic school in Emmitsburg, the first free

Catholic school in the country. From Emmitsburg

many other convents and schools were founded so

that this part of the country has had a profound

influence on the Catholic education of this country.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini founded the Missionary

Sisters of the Sacred Heart to help Italian

immigrants and by the time of her death she had

founded 67 institutions to help them. We think of St.

Katharine Drexel dedicating her life to help Native

Americans and African Americans. Because the

poor man Lazarus continues to knock at our doors in

every century in new ways the Church continues to

help the poor. So, in the latter part of the last century

the Vatican founded the Pontifical Council for

Justice and Peace which is an arm of the Curia to

reach out to the poor Lazarus of this world. The

annual Peter’s Pence Collection is entirely given by

the Pope to help the poor of the world. We have

many Catholic Church aid agencies scattered

throughout the world to help those in

underdeveloped countries.

As individuals we also reach out in many ways.

Whenever there is a natural disaster or calamity of

some kind people are known for their generosity.

Some people very generously tithe. In our time we

could say that those who are most poor and

vulnerable are the unborn. They are the Lazarus

knocking on our door for protection. Governments

also have many programs to give aid to developing

nations but what a pity that some of these programs

are tainted by supporting immorality, in particular

by not being open to life or by supporting abortion

programs in other countries.

What is the parable saying to us? Surely it is asking

us to reflect once again on our consumption to see

whether it is moderate or gone out of control. Surely

it is asking us to reflect on whether we are

sufficiently sensitive to the needs of those around us

who are suffering in any way. What is being

critiqued in the Scriptures today is when we ignore

what is happening around us. Indifference to those

who are in need and who are suffering is what the

Scriptures put before us today as sinful. What we do

to others we do to God. What we do to others we do

to Jesus.

моляться про дар миру для

українського народу, що надто довго

страждає від війни

29 жовтня оприлюднене підсумкове комюніке

зустрічі католицьких єпископів східного обряду

Європи, що від 27 до 29 жовтня 2017 р.

відбувалася в Лондоні та збіглася з відзначенням

60-річчя місцевої єпархії УГКЦ. У документі

особливе місце відведене Україні.

Єпископи східного обряду Європи засвідчили,

що моляться про дар миру й примирення для

українського народу, що надто довго страждає

від насильства та війни. Про це йдеться у

повідомленні Радіо Ватикану.

«Завершивши ці праці, всі ми, пастирі Східних

Католицьких Церков Європи, почуваємося

підбадьореними в нашому церковному служінні

Господньою любов’ю, тією Божественною

благодаттю, яка зціляє наші немочі, Господньою

любов’ю до Своєї Церкви, що є спонукою для

нас звіщати Його Євангеліє», – читаємо у

підсумковому комюніке зустрічі католицьких

єпископів східного обряду Європи.

В повідомленні зазначається, що це були

насичені дні зустрічей, конференцій, дискусій,

але, насамперед, братерства й молитви, під час

яких була нагода розділити сподівання та

страждання, проекти й труднощі Східних

Католицьких Церков Європи. В працях взяли

участь приблизно сорок єпископів, священиків

та експертів у сфері катехизації.

Відзначення 60-річчя української єпархії в

Лондоні, читаємо в комюніке, стало нагодою з

вдячністю згадати пастирську турботу

Апостольської Столиці, що виходила назустріч

душпастирським потребам східних католицьких

вірних, розсіяних у Західній Європі. Це дало

змогу також оцінити становище Східних

Католицьких Церков у всіх діаспорних

структурах, висловивши сподівання на те, що

досвід минулого може й сьогодні послужити

натхненням для того, аби розвивати дбання про

вірних, які емігрували зі своїх країн.

Апостольський Нунцій у Великобританії

архиєпископ Едвард Адамс, що брав участь у

відкритті зустрічі, передав вітання від Святішого

Отця Франциска, який уділив усім її учасникам

своє Апостольське благословення, поширюючи

його також на вірних української єпархії

Пресвятої Родини.

Єрархи, за підсумками засідань, висловлюють

свою переконаність у «головній та

фундаментальній необхідності звіщення Христа

через катехизацію та містагогію, що випливають

із служіння Божественної Літургії, як місця

визнавання та звершення нашої віри». В

повідомленні зазначається, що розмаїття

літургій, відслужених цими днями, дало змогу

досвідчити багатство католицькості, що

виявляється через різні християнські традиції,

які протягом двох тисяч років формують

християнське обличчя Європи.

«Цей факт утвердив наше усвідомлення завжди

нового покликання свідчити Євангеліє

Милосердя, любові та примирення сучасному

світові, позначеному стражданнями, бідністю,

несправедливістю та збройними конфліктами,

які гнітять обличчя багатьох наших Церков і

наших народів. Зокрема, молимося про дар миру

й примирення для українського народу, що надто

довго страждає від насильства та війни,

пам’ятаючи також про переслідування і

страждання наших братів-християн Близького

Сходу», – читаємо у документі.

В комюніке також знаходимо слова подяки на

адресу Конгрегації Східних Церков та Ради

Єпископських Конференцій Європи за підтримку

цих щорічних зустрічей, започаткованих 20 років

тому. Оскільки обговорювана тема стала

нагодою відчути себе залученими у

загальноцерковне оновлення катехизації, слова

подяки за підтримку скеровані також Папській

Раді сприяння новій євангелізації.

«Різні аспекти, які ми поглибили протягом цих

днів, звернули наш погляд на важливість наново

віднайти центральність Христа в нашому

проповідуванні та катехизуванні, на дійсність

методів великого передання наших Церков:

проповіді, катехизації, іконографії, містагогії, та,

одночасно, на необхідність використовувати нові

засоби комунікації для того, щоб звіщати всім

Христову Добру Новину», – наголошують східні

католицькі єпископи Європи.

У сучасному світі є багато пустомовства, серед якого важко відшукати істинне Боже Cлово. Однак люди повинні докладати чимало зусиль, щоб воно стало на першому місці в їхньому житті. Саме тому ми маємо молитися, щоб український народ став «доброю нивою», на якe впаде Боже Cлово і принесе добрий плід.

Про це сказав сьогодні, 29 жовтня 2017 року,

Церкви Блаженніший Святослав під час

проповіді до вірних у катедрі Пресвятої родини в

Лондоні. Глава УГКЦ цими днями перебуває у

Великобританії з офіційним душпастирським

візитом на запрошення владики Гліба (Лончини),

Єпарха єпархії Пресвятої родини в Лондоні.

Блаженніший Святослав почав свою проповідь зі

слів вітання з нагоди 60-річчя від заснування

єпархії УГКЦ у Великобританії. Предстоятель

зазначив, що в недільному Євангелії, у притчі

про сіяча, ми бачимо насамперед Бога, в якого

віримо і якого сповідуємо: «Господь є той, що

приходить. Він не закривається у самому собі, у

своєму вічному небесному щасті. Він виходить

до людини, бо ми чуємо про те, що сіяч вийшов.

Тим сіячем є Ісус Христос, який сам сказав до

апостолів, що прийшов проповідувати. Він є тим

Словом Божим з великої букви, Словом Отця,

скерованим до людини», − сказав проповідник.

«Сьогодні так багато слів сіються в наші серця,

так багато пустомовства зараз є у світі. Ми

живемо в цьому світі, який так багато говорить,

кричить, пише, пересилає слова «емейлами»,

«есемесками», «сайтами». І ми часом навіть не

можемо зрозуміти, де серед тих слів є Слово

життя», − роздумує проповідник.

За словами Блаженнішого Святослава, ми маємо

молитися, щоб український народ був «доброю

нивою», на яку впало Боже Слово і принесло

добрий плід. Люди повинні дбати про те, щоб

ставити його на перше місце у своєму житті.

«Століттями Україна називалася житницею

Європи. Не тільки тому, що в нас була добра і

родюча земля. Не тільки тому, що багато зерна

прибувало до Європи з наших українських

земель. Однак сьогодні ця житниця засіває

Європу ще й іншим зерном. За важких обставин,

а саме через біль, терпіння і сльози України та

економічні виклики, перед яким наші люди

повинні шукати кращої долі в країнах Європи,

Господь бачить кожного з нас як насінину, -

насінину, що має засіяти західноєвропейську

землю, в якої хтось вкрав Боже Слово. Ми маємо

засіяти цю землю словом Христового

Євангелія», − наголосив Глава УГКЦ.

На думку Блаженнішого Святослава, кожен із

нас покликаний свідчити свою християнську віру

там, де він є: «На роботі або навіть стоячи перед

британськими властями, які запитують скрізь

про ваш паспорт і візу, ви повинні свідчити, що

насамперед є християнами. Адже Бог бажає, щоб

ми були тим зерном, що засіє ці країни для нової

справи − нової євангелізації», − запевняє

проповідник.
