. 2 49

Monitoring Traps are the first step in a series of steps whose goal is to provide a system of information that allows the grower to manage insect problems with a minimum of input. There are many types of traps available and the most commonly used types can be used with or without pheromone lures. Monitoring traps used with pheromone lures will attract and collect members of a specific insect species. Scentry Traps are useful for determining the presence or absence of a pest, monitoring changes in pest populations, or determining the emergence patterns of adult insects as an aid in planning control measures. Scentry Pheromone Lures mimic the potent odor produced by an insect to attract, mate, and reproduce with members of the same species. The kit contains: 4 Wing Trap plastic tops, 12 sticker-coated trap bottoms, 4 wire hangers, 2 insect removal sticks, 4 spacers, 1 assembly instructions, 1 Monitoring Guide. Scentry , , [ ]. . . 3 49

The new, smaller format of 5 cm x 100 m makes it much easier for growers to hang up the Rollertraps. The new format is ideally suited to vegetable cultivation and ornamental plant cultivation, when the trap strips are often hung just above the plants: larger trap strips can then obstruct a great deal of light. The new format considerably reduces the amount of shade. The target pests are the same: whitefly, thrips and flying pests in general. High quality The adhesive of these small Rollertraps has a greater bonding power than other small sticky ribbons. As a result, thrips are unable to crawl free of the adhesive a problem which can occur with strips based on a dryer type of adhesive. Moreover, the colour is as equally attractive to . 7 49

insects as that of other types of trap strips. The new Rollertrap, available in yellow, is supplied in a pack of three. Koppert also supplies Rollertraps in rolls of 15 cm x 100 m, 30 cm x 100 m and 15 cm x 500 m. , : (, , ) . , , , .

(, ) . : Buglogical has designed a Fly Control Program using regular releases of fly parasites and beneficial nematodes. First, use regular releases of fly predator parasites based upon the prescriptions to the right. Suggested Prescription No. Horses No. Parasites Frequency 1-5 5-10 10-15 50,000 50,000 100,000 100,000 100,000 Every 3 Weeks Every 2 Weeks Every 3 Weeks Every 2 Weeks Weekly

Second, use beneficial nematodes once or twice 15-20 a year to treat manure piles or any areas where 20-25 fly larvae populations may be abundant.

Praying Mantid - Tenodera aridifolia sinensis

This adored insect, praying mantis is a general predator of most pest insects, mites, eggs, or any insect in reach. Each egg case contains approximately 200 baby mantids. Use 3 cases per 5,000 square feet or 10-100 cases per year per acre. Attract to twigs, leaves, fences, and other vegetation. Praying mantis egg cases may also be placed in the crotch of a bush or tree. Do not place on ground, as they become easy prey for ants. Releases can begin after the last frost and continue through summer. The Praying mantis is a most interesting and enjoyable beneficial insect to have around the garden and farm. It is the only known insect that can turn its head and . 14 49
