코난 도일이 쓴 추리소설의 주인공. 현재까지 인간이 창조한 캐릭터 중 가장 성공한 인물 중 하나이다. 양산끝에 하나의 "기믹"에 불과하게 된 드라큘라와는 달리 다양하게 재창조되었으나 그 기본적인 인격과 독특한 매력을 유지하는 불사조 같은 캐릭터다. 친구인 존 왓슨 박사와의 콤비는 그야말로 역사에 길이 남을 명콤비라 할 수 있다. 과거의 탐정 역 캐릭터들을 한 단계 진화시킨 캐릭터라고 평가받는다. 과거의 탐정들은 단순히 사건 푸는 기계적인 캐릭터성을 가지고 있었지만 홈즈는 그런 탐정 캐릭터들에게 인간다운 개성을 부여하는 시발점이 되었다. 일례로 홈즈 이전의 추리물 작가인 윌키 콜린스의 한 단편을 보면 사건을 해결하는 인물은 막판에 등장해서 그 전에 다른 인물이 한 삽질을 보고 단서를 알아낸뒤 사건을 해결하는 게 전부다. 성격도 그저 무뚝뚝하고 '사건만 해결하면 그만'이라는 듯한 태도를 보이고, 삽질하는 인물에 대한 경멸을 나타내는 것이 전부다. 이에 비하면 홈즈는 그 성격 등이 훨씬 사람답다. 그런데 아이러니하게도 지금은 이런 홈즈가 사람 같지 않다고 까인다.(...)코난 도일은 셜록 홈즈라는 인물이 실제로 존재했다는 느낌을 주기 위한 여러가지 장치를 해놓았다. 가령 작품 속에서 홈즈의 친구 왓슨은, 홈즈가 해결한 사건들을 글로 정리해 세상에 발표한다는 설정이 있다. 마치 독자들은 왓슨이 극중에서 발표한 글을 읽고 있다는 느낌을 얻게 되고, 마치 셜록 홈즈라는 인물이 실제로 존재했었다는 느낌도 어느 정도 받을 수 있다. 극중 배경이나 명칭은 거의 실존하는 것이거나, 실존하는 인명이나 지명을 고의로 바꾼 느낌을 준다. 잠깐잠깐 등장하는 등장인물들의 성격이나 직업같은 것도 사실감 있게 표현해 놓았다. 당연하겠지만 당시 셜록 홈즈를 연재했던 잡지사에 사건해결을 의뢰하는 사람들의 편지가 수두룩하게 왔었다고 한다. 그 인기는 아직도 엄청나서 2008년의 조사에 따르면 영국인의 약 58%가 "셜록 홈즈는 실존인물이다."라고 믿었으며, 셜록 홈즈 소설은 지금까지 한 번도 절판된 적이
