It is often very annoying to have to read so much text in one slide.You just don’t know on what to concentrate because it’s all letters in front of you.

Don’t forget also that at the same time that you are trying to read all of this, the lecturer is lecturing, that is, speaking and trying to explain this slide.

So, if you can concentrate on the lecturer while at the same reading everything that’s written on this slide, you really are good, and a terrific multi-tasker. I can’t do it together and some others also cannot; so, in short, do not put so much text in one slide. Got the point? Good.

• It is best to break up different ideas with “bullets”.• But these bullets should often not be full sentences, but

phrases, incomplete sentences.• The point is to minimize the amount of text that the audience

will read.• Remember that you, as an audience, need to do two things:

read and listen; not easy at the same time.• Also, it’s important, as written in the previous slide, that not

too much text appear on the slide.• … and not at the same time.• The next slide is much better.

• Minimum size of fonts = 20 pt• Build up from that: increase by 4 pts.• Hierarchy is important• Be consistent with the style and size of fonts• Font style in English = Times New Roman etc.

Note: The number of slides for each section should be proportionate to the length of each section in the article

Checklist

• Use abbreviations, but give full name first time it’s used• Must show figures/graphs• When copying figure with text from article, increase (or decrease) figure

proportionately so that text is same size as font of slide (20 pt, for example)• Separate number from units: 5 mL (not 5mL), 25 oC (not 25oC), 5 g (not 5g), etc.• Must ask questions at end of each presentation as part of overall grade• Your ability to answer questions is important.• Use full amount of time allotted• If your PowerPoint is in English, extra points• Make eye contact with the audience• Commas and Periods: 1 space after a comma, and 2 spaces after a period.
