Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 Kgs 4:8-11, 14-16a; Ps 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19; Rom 6:3-4, 8-11; Mt 10:37-42

Christ is the suffering servant mentioned by the Prophet Isaiah (cf. Is 52: 13-15),

who gave himself as a ransom for many (cf. Mt 20: 28). He urges his disciples,

each one of us, to take up his or her cross every day and follow him on the path of

total love of God the Father and of humanity: "he who does not take his cross and

follow me", he tells us, "is not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and

he who loses his life for my sake will find it" (Mt 10: 38-39). It is the logic of the

grain of wheat that dies in order to sprout and bring new life (cf. Jn 12: 24). Jesus

himself "is the grain of wheat which came from God, the divine grain that lets itself

fall to the ground, that lets itself sink, be broken down in death and precisely by so

doing germinates and can thus bear fruit in the immensity of the world"

If we read the lives of the Martyrs we are amazed at their calmness and courage in

confronting suffering and death: God's power is fully expressed in weakness, in

the poverty of those who entrust themselves to him and place their hope in him

alone (cf. 2 Cor 12: 9).

Dear brothers and sisters, we are probably not called to martyrdom, but not one of

us is excluded from the divine call to holiness, to attain the high standard of

Christian living, and this entails taking up our daily cross. All of us, especially in

our time when selfishness and individualism seem to prevail, must take on as a

first and fundamental commitment the duty to grow every day in greater love for

God and for our brothers and sisters, to transform our own lives and thereby

transform the life of our world too. Through the intercession of the Saints and

Martyrs let us ask the Lord to set our hearts on fire so that we may be able to love

as he has loved each one of us.

Pope Benedict XVI said “The world offers you comfort. But you were not made

for comfort, you were made for greatness”. Choosing “comfort” puts me first.

“Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why would

you settle for comfort when you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, put

yourself in Jesus’ hands and ask for guidance on using your gifts then live the life

God has intended for you!

Décimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 2 Re 4:8-11, 14-16a; Sal 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19; Rom 6:3-4, 8-11; Mt 10:37-42

Cristo es el siervo que sufre, de quien habla el profeta Isaías (cf. Is 52, 13-15), que se

entregó a sí mismo como rescate por muchos (cf. Mt 20, 28). Él exhorta a sus

discípulos, a cada uno de nosotros, a tomar cada día nuestra cruz y a seguirlo por el

camino del amor total a Dios Padre y a la humanidad: «El que no toma su cruz y me sigue —nos dice— no es digno de mí. El que encuentre su vida, la perderá; y el que

pierda su vida por mí, la encontrará» (Mt 10, 38-39). Es la lógica del grano de trigo

que muere para germinar y dar vida (cf. Jn 12, 24). Jesús mismo «es el grano de trigo

venido de Dios, el grano de trigo divino, que se deja caer en tierra, que se deja partir,

romper en la muerte y, precisamente de esta forma, se abre y puede dar fruto en todo

el mundo»

Si leemos la vida de los mártires quedamos sorprendidos por la serenidad y la valentía

a la hora de afrontar el sufrimiento y la muerte: el poder de Dios se manifiesta plenamente en la debilidad, en la pobreza de quien se encomienda a él y sólo en él

pone su esperanza (cf. 2 Co 12, 9).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, probablemente nosotros no estamos llamados al

martirio, pero ninguno de nosotros queda excluido de la llamada divina a la santidad, a vivir en medida alta la existencia cristiana, y esto conlleva tomar sobre sí la cruz cada

día. Todos, sobre todo en nuestro tiempo, en el que parece que prevalecen el egoísmo

y el individualismo, debemos asumir como primer y fundamental compromiso crecer

día a día en un amor mayor a Dios y a los hermanos para transformar nuestra vida y transformar así también nuestro mundo. Por intercesión de los santos y de los mártires

pidamos al Señor que inflame nuestro corazón para ser capaces de amar como él nos

ha amado a cada uno de nosotros

para la comodidad, fuiste hecho para la grandeza ". Escogiendo "La Comodidad"

me pone a mí primero. "Tomando tu cruz y siguiendo a Jesús" pones a Dios y a

los demás primero. ¡Por qué conformarse con la comodidad cuando se puede

alcanzar la grandeza! ¡Recoge tu cruz, ponte a las manos de Jesús y pide que guie

en el uso de tus dones y como vivir la vida que Dios quiso para ti!
