ΒΙΒΛΟΣ λόγων Τωβίτ τοῦ

Τωβιήλ τοῦ ᾿Ανανιήλ τοῦ

᾿Αδουήλ τοῦ Γαβαήλ ἐκ τοῦ

σπέρματος ᾿Ασιήλ ἐκ τς

φυλς Νεφθαλίμ 2 ὃς

Ἠχμαλωτεύθη ἐν ἡμέραις

᾿Ενεμεσσάρου τοῦ βασιλέως

᾿Ασσυρίων ἐκ Θίσβης ἥ ἐστιν

ἐκ δεξιῶν Κυδίως τς Νεφθαλὶ

ἐν τῆ Γαλιλαίᾳ ὑπεράνω

᾿Ασήρ - ἐγὼ Τωβὶτ ὁδοῖς

ἀληθείας ἐπορευόμην καὶ

δικαιοσύνης πάσας τὰς

ἡμέρας τς ζως μου 3 καὶ

ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς ἐποίησα

τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου καὶ τ

ἔθνει τοῖς προπορευθεῖσι μετ᾿

ἐμοῦ εἰς χώραν ᾿Ασσυρίων εἰς

Νινευ 4 καὶ ὅτε ἤμην ἐν τῆ

χώρᾳ μου ἐν τῆ γῆ ᾿Ισραὴλ

νεωτέρου μου ὄντος πᾶσα

φυλὴ τοῦ Νεφθαλὶμ τοῦ

πατρός μου ἀπέστη ἀπὸ τοῦ

οἴκου ῾Ιερουσολύμων τς

ἐκλεγείσης ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν

φυλῶν ᾿Ισραὴλ εἰς τὸ

θυσιάζειν πάσας τὰς φυλάς

καὶ ἡγιάσθη ὁ ναὸς τς

κατασκηνώσεως τοῦ ῾Υψίστου

καὶ Ὠκοδομήθη εἰς πάσας τὰς

γενεὰς τοῦ αἰῶνος 5 καὶ

πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ αἱ

συναποστᾶσαι ἔθυον τῆ Βάαλ

τῆ δαμάλει καὶ ὁ οἶκος

1 The tale of Tobit son of Tobiel

son of Ananiel son of Aduel son of

Gabael of the lineage of Asiel and

tribe of Naphtali

2 In the days of Shalmaneser king

of Assyria he was exiled from

Thisbe which is south of Kedesh-

Naphtali in Upper Galilee above

Hazor some distance to the west

north of Shephat

3 I Tobit have walked in paths

of truth and in good works all the

days of my life I have given much

in alms to my brothers and fellow

country-folk exiled like me to

Nineveh in the country of Assyria

4 In my young days when I was still

at home in the land of Israel the

whole tribe of Naphtali my

ancestor broke away from the

House of David and from

Jerusalem though this was the city

chosen out of all the tribes of Israel

for their sacrifices here the

Temple-- Gods dwelling-place--

had been built and hollowed for all

generations to come

5 All my brothers and the House of

Naphtali sacrificed on every hill-top

in Galilee to the calf

that Jeroboamking of Israel had

made at Dan

6 Often I was quite alone in making

the pilgrimage to Jerusalem

fulfilling the Law that binds all

Νεφθαλὶμ τοῦ πατρός μου 6

κἀγὼ μόνος ἐπορευόμην

πλεονάκις εἰς ῾Ιεροσόλυμα ἐν

ταῖς ἑορταῖς καθὼς γέγραπται

παντὶ τ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν

προστάγματι αἰωνίῳ τὰς

ἀπαρχὰς καὶ τὰς δεκάτας τῶν

γεννημάτων καὶ τὰς

πρωτοκουρίας ἔχων 7 καὶ

ἐδίδουν αὐτὰς τοῖς ἱερεῦσι τοῖς

υἱοῖς ᾿Ααρὼν πρὸς τὸ

θυσιαστήριον πάντων τῶν

γεννημάτων τὴν δεκάτην

ἐδίδουν τοῖς υἱοῖς Λευὶ τοῖς

θεραπεύουσιν εἰς

῾Ιερουσαλήμ καὶ τὴν δευτέραν

δεκάτην ἀπεπρατιζόμην καὶ

ἐπορευόμην καὶ ἐδαπάνων

αὐτὰ ἐν ῾Ιεροσολύμοις καθ᾿

ἕκαστον ἐνιαυτόν 8 καὶ τὴν

τρίτην ἐδίδουν οἷς καθήκει

καθὼς ἐνετείλατο Δεββώρα ἡ

μήτηρ τοῦ πατρός μου διότι

ὀρφανὸς κατελείφθην ὑπὸ τοῦ

πατρός μου 9 καὶ ὅτε

ἐγενόμην ἀνήρ ἔλαβον

῎Ανναν γυναῖκα ἐκ τοῦ

σπέρματος τς πατριᾶς ἡμῶν

καὶ ἐγέννησα ἐξ αὐτς

Τωβίαν 10 καὶ ὅτε

Ἠχμαλωτίσθημεν εἰς Νινευ

πάντες οἱ ἀδελφοί μου καὶ οἱ

ἐκ τοῦ γένους μου ἤσθιον ἐκ

τῶν ἄρτων τῶν ἐθνῶν 11 ἐγὼ

δὲ συνετήρησα τὴν ψυχήν μου

Israel perpetually I would hurry

to Jerusalem with the first yield of

fruits and beasts the tithe of cattle

and the sheeps first shearings

7 I would give these to the priests

the sons of Aaron for the altar To

the Levites ministering

at Jerusalem I would give my tithe

of wine and corn olives

pomegranates and other fruits Six

years in succession I took the

second tithe in money and went

and paid it annually at Jerusalem

8 I gave the third to orphans and

widows and to the strangers who

live among the Israelites I brought

it them as a gift every three years

When we ate we obeyed both the

ordinances of

the law of Moses and the

exhortations of Deborah the

mother of our ancestor Ananiel

for my father had dies and left me

an orphan

9 When I came to mans estate I

married a woman from our kinsfolk

whose name was Anna she bore

me a son whom I called Tobias

10 When the banishment

into Assyria came I was taken

away and went to Nineveh All my

brothers and the people of my race

ate the food of the heathen

11 but for my part I was careful not

to eat the food of the heathen

12 And because I had

μὴ φαγεῖν 12 καθότι

ἐμεμνήμην τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ὅλῃ τῆ

ψυχῆ μου 13 καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ

῞Υψιστος χάριν καὶ μορφὴν

ἐνώπιον ᾿Ενεμεσσάρου καὶ

ἤμην αὐτοῦ ἀγοραστής 14 καὶ

ἐπορευόμην εἰς τὴν Μηδίαν

καὶ παρεθέμην Γαβαήλῳ τ

ἀδελφ Γαβρία ἐν Ράγοις τς

Μηδίας ἀργυρίου τάλαντα

δέκα 15 Καὶ ὅτε ἀπέθανεν

Ἐνεμεσσάρ ἐβασίλευσε

Σενναχηρὶμ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ᾿

αὐτοῦ καὶ αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ

ἠκαταστάθησαν καὶ οὐκ ἔτι

ἠδυνάσθην πορευθναι εἰς

τὴν Μηδίαν 16 καὶ ἐν ταῖς

ἡμέραις Ἐνεμεσσάρου

ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς ἐποίουν

τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου 17 τοὺς

ἄρτους μου ἐδίδουν τοῖς

πεινῶσι καὶ ἱμάτια τοῖς

γυμνοῖς καὶ εἴ τινα ἐκ τοῦ

γένους μου ἐθεώρουν

τεθνηκότα καὶ ἐρριμμένον

ὀπίσω τοῦ τείχους Νινευ

ἔθαπτον αὐτόν 18 καὶ εἴ τινα

ἀπέκτεινε Σενναχηρὶμ ὁ

βασιλεύς ὅτε ἦλθε φεύγων ἐκ

τς Ἰουδαίας ἔθαψα αὐτοὺς

κλέπτων πολλοὺς γὰρ

ἀπέκτεινεν ἐν τ θυμ αὐτοῦ

καὶ ἐζητήθη ὑπὸ τοῦ βασιλέως

τὰ σώματα καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη 19

πορευθεὶς δὲ εἷς τῶν ἐν

13 the Most High granted me the

favour of Shalmaneser and I

became the kings purveyor

14 Until his death I used to travel to

Media where I transacted business

on his behalf and I deposited sacks

of silver worth ten talents with

Gabael the brother of Gabrias at

Rhages in Media

15 On the death of Shalmaneser his

son Sennacherib succeeded the

roads into Media were barred and

I could no longer go there

16 In the days of Shalmaneser I had

often given alms to the people of

my race

17 I gave my bread to the hungry

and clothes to those who lacked

them and I buried when I saw

them the bodies of my country-

folk thrown over the walls of

Nineveh

18 I also buried those who were

killed by Sennacherib When

Sennacherib was beating a

disorderly retreat from Judaea

after the King of heaven had

punished his blasphemies he killed

a great number of Israelites in his

rage So I stole their bodies to bury

them Sennacherib looked for

them and could not find them

19 A Ninevite went and told the

Νινευ ὑπέδειξε τ βασιλεῖ

περὶ ἐμοῦ ὅτι θάπτω αὐτούς

καὶ ἐκρύβην ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὅτι

ζητοῦμαι ἀποθανεῖν φοβηθεὶς

ἀνεχώρησα 20 καὶ διηρπάγη

πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντά μου καὶ

οὐ κατελείφθη μοι οὐδὲν πλὴν

Ἄννας τς γυναικός μου καὶ

Τωβίου τοῦ υἱοῦ μου 21 καὶ οὐ

διλθον ἡμέρας πεντήκοντα

ἕως οὗ ἀπέκτειναν αὐτὸν οἱ

δύο υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔφυγον εἰς

τὰ ὄρη Ἀραράθ καὶ

ἐβασίλευσε Σαχερδονὸς υἱὸς

αὐτοῦ ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔταξεν

Ἀχιάχαρον τὸν Ἀναὴλ υἱὸν

τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μου ἐπὶ πᾶσαν

τὴν ἐκλογιστίαν τς βασιλείας

αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τήν

διοίκησιν 22 καὶ ἠξίωσεν

Ἀχιάχαρος περὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ

ἦλθον εἰς Νινευ Ἀχιάχαρος

δὲ ἦν ὁ οἰνοχόος καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ

δακτυλίου καὶ διοικητὴς καὶ

ἐκλογιστής καὶ κατέστησεν

αὐτὸν ὁ Σαχερδονὸς ἐκ

δευτέρας ἦν δὲ ἐξάδελφός

μου

king it was I who had buried them

secretly When I knew that the king

had been told about me and saw

myself being hunted by men who

would put me to death I was

afraid and fled

20 All my goods were seized they

were all confiscated by the

treasury nothing was left me but

my wife Annaand my son Tobias

21 Less than forty days after this

the king was murdered by his two

sons who then fled to the

mountains of Ararat His son

Esarhaddon succeeded Ahikar the

son of my brother Anael was

appointed chancellor of the

exchequer for the kingdom and

given the main ordering of affairs

22 Ahikar then interceded for me

and I was allowed to return to

Nineveh since Ahikar had been

chief cupbearer keeper of the

signet administrator and treasurer

under Sennacherib king of Assyria

and Esarhaddon had kept him in

office He was a relation of mine

he was my nephew

ΟΤΕ δὲ κατλθον εἰς

τὸν οἶκόν μου καὶ

ἀπεδόθη μοι ῎Αννα ἡ

γυνή μου καὶ Τωβίας ὁ

υἱός μου ἐν τῆ

πεντηκοστῆ ἑορτῆ ἥ

ἐστιν ἁγία ἑπτὰ

ἑβδομάδων ἐγενήθη

ἄριστον καλόν μοι καὶ

ἀνέπεσα τοῦ φαγεῖν 2

καὶ ἐθεασάμην ὄψα

πολλὰ καὶ εἶπα τ υἱ

μου βάδισον καὶ ἄγαγε

ὃν ἅν εὕρῃς τῶν

ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν ἐνδε ὃς

μέμνηται τοῦ Κυρίου

καὶ ἰδοὺ μένω σε 3 καὶ

ἐλθὼν εἶπε πάτερ εἷς

ἐκ τοῦ γένους ἡμῶν

ἐστραγγαλωμένος

ἔρριπται ἐν τῆ ἀγορᾷ 4

κἀγὼ πρὶν ἥ γεύσασθαί

με ἀναπηδήσας

ἀνειλόμην αὐτὸν εἴς τι

οἴκημα ἕως οὗ ἔδυ ὁ

ἥλιος 5 καὶ ἐπιστρέψας

ἐλουσάμην καὶ ἤσθιον

τὸν ἄρτον μου ἐν λύπῃ

6 καὶ ἐμνήσθην τς

προφητείας ᾿Αμώς

καθὼς εἶπε

στραφήσονται αἱ ἑορταὶ

ὑμῶν εἰς πένθος καὶ

πᾶσαι αἱ εὐφροσύναι

1 In the reign of Esarhaddon

therefore I returned home and

my wife Anna was restored to me

with my son Tobias At our feast

of Pentecost (the feast of Weeks)

there was a good dinner I took my

place for the meal

2 the table was brought to me and

various dishes were brought I then

said to my son Tobias Go my

child and seek out some poor

loyal-hearted man among our

brothers exiled in Nineveh and

bring him to share my meal

I will wait until you come back my

3 So Tobias went out to look for

some poor man among our

brothers but he came back again

and said Father I replied What

is it my child He went on

Father one of our nation has just

been murdered he has been

strangled and then thrown down in

the market place he is there still

4 I sprang up at once left my meal

untouched took the man from the

market place and laid him in one of

my rooms waiting until sunset to

bury him

5 I came in again and washed

myself and ate my bread in sorrow

6 remembering the words of

the prophet Amos concerning

Bethel I shall turn your festivals

ἔκλαυσα καὶ ὅτε ἔδυ ὁ

ἥλιος Ὠχόμην καὶ

ὀρύξας ἔθαψα αὐτόν 8

καὶ οἱ πλησίον

ἐπεγέλων λέγοντες οὐκ

ἔτι φοβεῖται φονευθναι

περὶ τοῦ πράγματος

τούτου καὶ ἀπέδρα καὶ

ἰδοὺ πάλιν θάπτει τοὺς

νεκρούς 9 καὶ ἐν αὐτῆ

τῆ νυκτὶ ἀνέλυσα θάψας

καὶ ἐκοιμήθην

μεμιαμμένος παρὰ τὸν

τοῖχον τς αὐλς καὶ τὸ

πρόσωπόν μου

ἀκάλυπτον ἦν 10 καὶ

οὐκ ᾔδειν ὅτι στρουθία

ἐν τ τοίχῳ ἐστί καὶ

τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν μου

ἀνεῳγότων ἀφώδευσαν

τὰ στρουθία θερμὸν εἰς

τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου

καὶ ἐγενήθη λευκώματα

ἐν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μου

καὶ ἐπορεύθην πρὸς

ἰατρούς καὶ οὐκ

ὠφέλησάν με

᾿Αχιάχαρος δὲ ἔτρεφέ

με ἕως οὗ ἐπορεύθην

εἰς τὴν ᾿ΕλυμαἸδα 11

καὶ ἡ γυνή μου ῎Αννα

ἠριθεύετο ἐν τοῖς

γυναικείοις 12 καὶ

ἀπέστελλε τοῖς κυρίοις

into mourning and all your singing

into lamentation

7 And I wept When the sun was

down I went and dug a grave and

buried him

8 My neighbours laughed and said

See He is not afraid any more

(You must remember that a price

had been set on my head earlier

for this very thing) Once before

he had to flee yet here he is

beginning to bury the dead again

9 That night I took a bath then I

went into the courtyard and lay

down by the courtyard wall Since

it was hot I left my face uncovered

10 I did not know that there were

sparrows in the wall above my

head their hot droppings fell into

my eyes This caused white spots

to form which I went to have

treated by the doctors But the

more ointments they tried me

with the more the spots blinded

me and in the end I become

completely blind I remained

without sight four years all my

brothers were distressed on my

behalf and Ahikar provided for my

upkeep for two years until he left

for Elymais

11 My wife Anna then undertook

womans work she would spin

wool and take cloth to weave

12 she used to deliver whatever had

been ordered from her and then

αὐτοὶ τὸν μισθὸν

προσδόντες καὶ ἔριφον

13 ὅτε δὲ ἦλθε πρός με

ἤρξατο κράζειν καὶ

εἶπα αὐτῆ πόθεν τὸ

ἐρίφιον μὴ κλεψιμαῖόν

ἐστιν ἀπόδος αὐτὸ τοῖς

κυρίοις οὐ γὰρ θεμιτόν

ἐστι φαγεῖν κλεψιμαῖον

14 ἡ δὲ εἶπε δῶρον

δέδοταί μοι ἐπὶ τ

μισθ καὶ οὐκ

ἐπίστευον αὐτῆ καὶ

ἔλεγον ἀποδιδόναι αὐτὸ

τοῖς κυρίοις καί

ἠρυθρίων πρὸς αὐτήν ἡ

δὲ ἀποκριθεῖσα εἶπέ μοι

ποῦ εἰσιν αἱ

ἐλεημοσύναι σου καὶ αἱ

δικαιοσύναι σου ἰδοὺ

γνωστὰ πάντα μετὰ

σοῦ

ΚΑΙ λυπηθεὶς ἔκλαυσα καὶ

προσευξάμην μετ᾿ ὀδύνης

λέγων 2 δίκαιος εἶ Κύριε

καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ

πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοί σου

ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ ἀλήθεια

καὶ κρίσιν ἀληθινὴν καὶ

δικαίαν σὺ κρίνεις εἰς τὸν

1 Then sad at heart I sighed and

wept and began this prayer of

lamentation

2 You are just O Lord and just are

all your works All your ways

are grace and truth and you are

the Judge of the world

3 Therefore Lord remember me

αἰῶνα 3 μνήσθητί μου καὶ

ἐπίβλεψον ἐπ᾿ ἐμέ μή με

ἐκδικήσῃς ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις

μου καὶ τοῖς ἀγνοήμασί μου

καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου ἃ

ἥμαρτον ἐνώπιόν σου 4

παρήκουσαν γὰρ τῶν

ἐντολῶν σου καὶ ἔδωκας

ἐντολάς σου οὐ γὰρ

ἐπορεύθημεν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ

ἐνώπιόν σου 6 καὶ νῦν κατὰ

τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιόν σου

ποίησον μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἐπίταξον

ἀναλαβεῖν τὸ πνεῦμά μου

γ διότι λυσιτελεῖ μοι

ἀποθανεῖν ἥ ζν ὅτι

ὀνειδισμοὺς ψευδεῖς ἤκουσα

καὶ λύπη ἐστὶ πολλὴ ἐν ἐμοί

ἐπίταξον ἀπολυθναί με τς

ἀνάγκης ἤδη εἰς τὸν αἰώνιον

τόπον μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ

πρόσωπόν σου ἀπ᾿ἐμοῦ 7

᾿Εν τῆ αὐτῆ ἡμέρᾳ συνέβη

τῆ θυγατρὶ Ραγουὴλ Σάρρᾳ

look on me Do not punish me for

my sins or for my needless faults

or those of my ancestors

4 For we have sinned against you

and broken your commandments

and you have given us over to be

plundered to captivity and death

to be the talk the laughing-stock

and scorn of all the nations

among whom you have dispersed

5 And now all your decrees are

πατρί μου ἐὰν ποιήσω

καὶ τὸ γρας αὐτοῦ κατάξω

ἐδεήθη πρὸς τῆ θυρίδι καὶ

εἶπεν εὐλογητὸς εἶ Κύριε ὁ

Θεός μου καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ

ὄνομά σου τὸ ἅγιον καὶ

ἔντιμον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας

εὐλογήσαισάν σε πάντα τὰ

καὶ νῦν Κύριε τοὺς

θέμα γὰρ ἀγαθὸν θησαυρίζεις

διότι ἐλεημοσύνη ἐκ θανάτου

ρύεται καὶ οὐκ ἐᾷ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς

τὸ σκότος 11 δῶρον γὰρ ἀγαθόν

ἐστιν ἐλεημοσύνη πᾶσι τοῖς

ποιοῦσιν αὐτὴν ἐνώπιον τοῦ

῾Υψίστου 12 πρόσεχε σεαυτ

παιδίον ἀπὸ πάσης πορνείας

καὶ γυναῖκα πρῶτον λάβε ἀπὸ

τοῦ σπέρματος τῶν πατέρων

σου μὴ λάβῃς γυναῖκα

ἀλλοτρίαν ἣ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τς

φυλς τοῦ πατρός σου διότι υἱοὶ

death and saves people from

passing down to darkness

11 Almsgiving is a most effective

offering for all those who do it in

the presence of the Most High

conduct Choose a wife of your

fathers stock Do not take a

σοι ποίει ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ μὴ

φθονεσάτω σου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς ἐν

ἔκχεον τοὺς ἄρτους σου ἐπὶ τὸν

ἐπτωχεύσαμεν ὑπάρχει σοι

πολλά ἐὰν φοβηθῆς τὸν Θεόν

ΚΑΙ ἀποκριθεὶς Τωβίας

εἶπεν αὐτ πάτερ

ποιήσω πάντα ὅσα

ἐντέταλσαί μοι 2 ἀλλὰ

πῶς δυνήσομαι λαβεῖν τὸ

1 Tobias then replied to his father Tobit

Father I shall do everything you have

told me

2 But how am I to recover the silver from

him He does not know me nor I him

ἐπορεύθη ζητσαι

πατρί ἰδοὺ εὕρηκα ὃς

συμπορεύσεταί μοι ὁ δὲ

εἶπε φώνησον αὐτὸν

πρός με ἵνα ἐπιγνῶ

ποίας φυλς ἐστι καὶ εἰ

πιστὸς τοῦ πορευθναι

μετὰ σοῦ 10 καὶ

What token am I to give him for him to

believe me and hand the silver over to

me And besides I do not know what

roads to take for this journey into

3 Then Tobit answered his son Tobias

Each of us set his signature to a note

which I cut in two so that each could

keep half of it I took one piece and put

the other with the silver To think it was

twenty years ago I left this silver in his

keeping And now my child find a

trustworthy travelling companion-- we

shall pay him for his time until you arrive

back-- and then go and collect the silver

from Gabael

4 Tobias went out to look for a man who

knew the way to go with him to Media

Outside he

found Raphael theangel standing facing

him though he did not guess he was

an angel of God

5 He said Where do you come from

friend The angel replied I am one of

9 Tobias went in and told his father that

The angel said Take comfort before

to Media Will you join him as his guide

crossed all its plains and mountains and

ἐξαπέστειλας τὸ παιδίον

used to go to Jerusalem with me we

17 Tobit said Blessings on you brother

Then he turned to his son My child he

said prepare what you need for the

journey and set off with your brother

May God in heaven protect you abroad

and bring you both back to me safe and

sound May his angel go with you and

οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὄψονται

Going away and coming back all will be

well with our child You willsee for

yourself when he comes back safe and

22 A good angel will go with him

he will have a good journey and come

ΟΙ δὲ πορευόμενοι τὴν ὁδὸν

ἦλθον ἑσπέρας ἐπὶ τὸν

Τίγριν ποταμόν καὶ

ηὐλίζοντο ἐκεῖ 2 τὸ δὲ

παιδάριον κατέβη

περικλύσασθαι καὶ

ἀνεπήδησεν ἰχθὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ

ποταμοῦ καὶ ἐβουλήθη

δαιμόνιον ἥ πνεῦμα

πονηρόν ταῦτα δεῖ

καπνίσαι ἐνώπιον

ἀνθρώπου ἥ γυναικός καὶ

οὐκέτι οὐ μὴ ὀχληθῆ 9 ἡ δὲ

χολή ἐγχρῖσαι ἄνθρωπον

ὃς ἔχει λευκώματα ἐν τοῖς

ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ ἰαθήσεται

παρὰ Ραγουήλ καὶ αὐτὸς

συγγενής σού ἐστι καὶ

7 Then the boy asked the angel this

question Brother Azarias what can

the fishs heart liver and gall cure

8 He replied You burn the fishs

heart and liver and their smoke is

used in the case of

a man or womanplagued by

a demon or evil spirit any such

affliction disappears for good

leaving no trace

9 As regards the gall this is used as

an eye ointment for anyone having

white spots on his eyes after using

it you have only to blow on the

spots to cure them

10 They entered Media and had

nearly reached Ecbatana

The angel went on Tonight we are

to stay with Raguel who is a

kinsman of yours He has a

daughter called Sarah

φοβοῦ ὅτι σοὶ αὐτὴ

ἡτοιμασμένη ἦν ἀπὸ τοῦ

αἰῶνος καὶ σὺ αὐτὴν

σώσεις καὶ πορεύσεται

μετὰ σοῦ καὶ ὑπολαμβάνω

in the bridal room He died the

θάρσει τέκνον ὁ Κύριος

τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τς γς

Moses she is given to you Heaven

itself decrees she shall be yours I

therefore entrust your sister to you

From now on you are her brother

and she is your sister She is given to

you from today for ever The Lord of

heaven favour you tonight my child

and grant you his grace and peace

12 Raguel called for his daughter

Sarah took her by the hand and

ἔλαβε τὴν τέφραν τῶν

θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἐπέθηκε

τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ ἰχθύος

καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ καὶ

ἐκάπνισεν 3 ὅτε δὲ

ὠσφράνθη τὸ δαιμόνιον

προσευξώμεθα ἵνα

εὐλογησάτωσάν σε οἱ

1 When they had finished eating

and drinking and it

seemed time to go to bed the

young man was taken from the

dining room to the bedroom

2 Tobias remembered Raphaels

advice he went to his bag took

the fishs heart and liver out of it

and put some on the burning

incense

3 The reek of the fish distressed

the demon who fled through the

air to Egypt Raphael pursued

him there shackled him and

strangled him forthwith

4 The parents meanwhile had

gone out and shut the door

18 And he made his servants fill

the grave in before dawn broke

19 He told his wife to make an

ovenful of bread he went to his

flock brought back two oxen and

four sheep and gave orders for

them to be cooked and

preparations began

I will not hear of your leaving

here for a fortnight You are to

drinking with me You will make

all I have and take her safe and

1 Then Tobias turned to Raphael

the wedding feast Gabael

started counting out the sacks

to him-- the seals were intact--

and they loaded them on to the

camels

6 Early in the morning they set

off together for the feast and

reached Raguels house where

they found Tobiasdining He

rose to greet Gabael who burst

into tears and blessed him with

the words Excellent son of a

father beyond reproach just

and generous in his dealings

ΚΑΙ Τωβὶτ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ

ἐλογίσατο ἑκάστης

ἡμέρας καὶ ὡς

ἐπληρώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι

τς πορείας καὶ οὐκ

ἤρχοντο 2 εἶπε μήποτε

κατῄσχυνται ἥ μήποτε

ἀπέθανε Γαβαὴλ καὶ

οὐδεὶς αὐτ δίδωσι τὸ

ἀργύριον 3 καὶ ἐλυπεῖτο

λίαν 4 εἶπε δὲ αὐτ ἡ

γυνή ἀπώλετο τὸ παιδίον

1 Every day meanwhile Tobit kept

reckoning the days required for the

journey there and the journey back The

full number went by and still his son

had not come

2 Then he thought I hope he has not

been delayed there I hope Gabael is not

dead so that no one will give him the

silver

3 And he began to worry

4 His wife Anna kept saying My son is

dead He is no longer among the living

ἐξαπόστειλόν με ὅτι ὁ

πατήρ μου καὶ ἡ μήτηρ

μου οὐκέτι ἐλπίζουσιν

ὁ πενθερός μεῖνον παρ᾿

ἐμοί κἀγὼ ἐξαποστελῶ

δηλώσουσιν αὐτ τὰ κατὰ

σέ 9 καὶ Τωβίας λέγει

ἐξαπόστειλόν με πρὸς τὸν

πατέρα μου 10 ἀναστὰς

δὲ Ραγουὴλ ἔδωκεν αὐτ

Σάρραν τὴν γυναῖκα

And she began to weep and mourn over

her son She kept saying

5 Alas I should never have let you leave

me my child you the light of my eyes

6 And Tobit would reply Hush my

sister Do not worry All is well with him

Something has happened there to delay

them His companion is someone we can

trust one of our kinsmen at that Do not

lose heart my sister

7 He will soon be here But all she would

say was Leave me alone do not try to

deceive me My child is dead And every

day she would go abruptly out to watch

the road by which her son had left She

trusted no eyes but her own Once the

sun had set she would come home

again only to weep and moan all night

unable to sleep After the fourteen days

of feasting that Raguel had sworn to

keep for his daughters marriage Tobias

came to him and said Let me go now

my father and mother must have lost all

hope of seeing me again So I beg you

father to let me return to my fathers

ἐξαπέστειλε λέγων

εὐοδώσει ὑμᾶς τέκνα ὁ

Θεὸς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πρὸ τοῦ

με ἀποθανεῖν 12 καὶ εἶπε

τῆ θυγατρὶ αὐτοῦ τίμα

τοὺς πενθερούς σου αὐτοὶ

νῦν γονεῖς σού εἰσιν

ἀκούσαιμί σου ἀκοὴν

καλήν καὶ ἐφίλησεν

αὐτήν καὶ ῎Εδνα εἶπε

πρὸς Τωβίαν ἀδελφὲ

ἀγαπητέ ἀποκαταστήσαι

σε ὁ Κύριος τοῦ οὐρανοῦ

καὶ δῴη μοι ἰδεῖν σου

παιδία ἐκ Σάρρας τς

and women oxen and sheep donkeys

and camels clothes and money and

household things

11 And so he let them leave happily

To Tobias he said these parting words

Good health my son and a happy

journey May the Lord of heaven be

gracious to you and to your wife Sarah

I hope to see your childrenbefore I die

12 To his daughter Sarah he said Go

now to your father-in-laws house since

henceforward they are as much

your parents as those who gave you life

Go in peace my daughter I hope to

hear nothing but good of you as long as

I live He said goodbye to them and let

them go Edna in her turn said to Tobias

Dear son and brother may it please the

Lord to bring you back again I hope to

live long enough to see the children of

you and my daughter Sarah before I die

In the sight of the Lord I give my

daughter into your keeping Never make

her unhappy as long as you live Go in

peace my son Henceforward I am your

mother and Sarah is your sister May we

all live happily for the rest of our lives

And she kissed them both and saw them

13 Tobias left Raguels house with

10 Tobit rose to his feet and

stumbled across the courtyard

through the door Tobias came on

towards him

11 (he had the fishs gall in his

hand) He blew into his eyes and

said steadying him Take courage

medicine left it there a while

12 then with both hands peeled

away a filmy skin from the corners

of his eyes

13 Then his father fell on his neck

14 and wept He exclaimed I can

see you my son the light of my

eyes And he said Blessed be God

Blessed be his great name Blessed

be all his holy angels Blessed be

his great name for evermore

15 For having afflicted me he has

had pity on me and now I see my

son Tobias Tobias went indoors

16 Tobit set off to the gates of

Nineveh to meet his daughter-in-

law giving joyful praise to God as

he went When the people of

Nineveh saw him walking without a

guide and stepping forward as

briskly as of old they were

astonished

17 Tobit described to them

how God had taken pity on him

and had opened his eyes

Then Tobit met Sarah the bride of

his son Tobias and blessed her in

these words Welcome daughter

Blessed be your God for sending

you to us my daughter Blessings

on your father blessings on my son

Tobias blessings on yourself my

daughter Welcome now to your

won house in joyfulness an din

blessedness Come in my

daughter That day brought joy to

the Jews of Nineveh

τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν

αὐτ ὅρα τέκνον μισθὸν τ

ἀνθρώπῳ τ συνελθόντι σοι

καὶ προσθεῖναι αὐτ δεῖ 2

1 When the wedding feast was

over Tobit called his

son Tobias and said My son

you ought to think about paying

the amount due to your fellow

γυναῖκα μου ἐθεράπευσε καὶ

τὸ ἀργύριόν μου ἤνεγκε καὶ

σὲ ὁμοίως ἐθεράπευσε 4 καὶ

εἶπεν ὁ πρεσβύτης δικαιοῦται

αὐτ 5 καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸν

ἄγγελον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτ

λάβε τὸ ἥμισυ πάντων ὧν

ἐνηνόχατε καὶ ὕπαγε

ὑγιαίνων 6 τότε καλέσας

τοὺς δύο κρυπτῶς εἶπεν

αὐτοῖς εὐλογεῖτε τὸν Θεὸν

καὶ αὐτ ἐξομολογεῖσθε καὶ

μεγαλωσύνην δίδοτε αὐτ

καὶ ἐξολογεῖσθε αὐτ

ἐνώπιον πάντων τῶν

ζώντων περὶ ὧν ἐποίησε

μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν ἀγαθὸν τὸ

εὐλογεῖν τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ὑψοῦν

τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ τοὺς λόγους

τῶν ἔργων τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντίμως

ὑποδεικνύοντες καὶ μὴ

ὀκνεῖτε ἐξομολογεῖσθαι

αὐτ 7 μυστήριον βασιλέως

καλὸν κρύψαι τὰ δὲ ἔργα τοῦ

Θεοῦ ἀνακαλύπτειν ἐνδόξως

ἀγαθὸν ποιήσατε καὶ κακὸν

οὐχ εὑρήσει ὑμᾶς 8 ἀγαθὸν

προσευχὴ μετὰ νηστείας καὶ

ἐλεημοσύνης καὶ

δικαιοσύνης ἀγαθὸν τὸ

ὀλίγον μετὰ δικαιοσύνης ἥ
