Letter from the Hon Tony TSE Wai-chuen

Thank you for your letter to the Secretary for Home Affairs dated

27 March regarding the request of the Hon Tony TSE Wai-chuen for

supplementary information from the Government on the proposed “Community

Hall-cum-Home Affairs Enquiry Centre in Cheung Chau”. Upon consultation

with the Architectural Services Department and the Leisure and Cultural

Services Department (LCSD), the Home Affairs Department (HAD) is

authorised to reply as follows.

(1) Facilities in Cheung Chau Community Hall

The Cheung Chau Community Hall is designed in accordance with the

standards for the provision of new community halls (CHs) as set out in the Hong

Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines. The area and distribution of major

facilities in the complex are set out below:

There will be male and female toilets and an accessible toilet on the ground floor

of the complex, and a babycare room and a universal toilet on the first floor.

The layout plans are still being fine-tuned, and when finalised, they will be

provided as soon as ready, or submitted along with papers for the Public Works

Subcommittee.

(2) Activities held by local organisations of Cheung Chau in CHs on Lantau

Island

Transportation from Cheung Chau to the existing two CHs in Discovery

Bay and Tung Chung on the Lantau Island is rather inconvenient. Travellers

have to either take ferry to Mui Wo and change to a bus, or take ferry to Central

and change to MTR. The journey takes one and a half hours to two hours.

According to the HAD’s records, no local organisations of Cheung Chau rented

the above CHs for organising activities between 2016 and 2018.

(3) Usage of two sports centres in Cheung Chau

Praya Street Sports Centre and Cheung Chau Sports Centre were

officially opened in 1991 and 1993 respectively, providing a wide range of

recreation and sports facilities for residents in Cheung Chau. Information on

community activities held by local organisations of Cheung Chau in the two

sports centres in the past three years is set out at Annex 1. Usage rate of the

recreation and sports facilities of the two sports centres as well as statistics on
