Mike

experience by practicing it with your partner.

1

A: How did you feel about English learning

at the very beginning?

B: It is so different from Chinese.

A: Why did you continue with your

English learning then?

B: I’m not the sort of person who gives up

at the fi rst sign of diffi culty.

A: In your opinion, what is the most im-

portant thing in English learning?

B: To develop good learning habits, I think.

A: What do you think of your English learn-

ing now?

B: Now I’ve fallen in love with English

learning.

A: I wish you great progress in your English

learning.

B: Thank you.

PART II Experiencing

Task 1 Act It Out The following two conversations are about language learning experiences.

Practice them with your partner.

Conversation 1

Interviewer: How helpful did you fi nd mind mapping in understanding the story?

Student: With the help of mind mapping, I could remember the story well. It was

interesting to do this.

Interviewer: How did you construct your mind map for language learning? Was it diffi cult?

Student: When we did mind mapping, the teacher asked us to write down some information.

It started with “motivation,” “attitude,” “method,” “practice” and so on. We

drew our own mind map.

Interviewer: How helpful did you fi nd mind mapping in planning your writing task then?

Words and Expressions

Student: I learned a lot from the mind mapping for language learning. I wrote about

my motivation in the fi rst paragraph, my attitudes in the second paragraph,

and my learning methods in the third.

Conversation 2

A: You say that you can speak many languages?

B: Well, I once studied a little French at school, but I’ve forgotten most of it now. I learned

some Russian while studying in Russia and now I’m studying Spanish in evening classes.

A: You mention that you speak Japanese at home with your parents?

B: Yes, I do. I’m also learning Chinese now on the Internet.

A: What do you think about studying a language on the Internet?

B: It’s not easy, particularly with listening and speaking, because sometimes the connection is

not good enough.

A: I bet you fi nd Chinese characters diffi cult to write!

B: Actually, many of the characters are similar in both Chinese and Japanese, so they are

easy for me.

A: So, you can read and write much better than you speak and understand other speakers,

right?

B: Yes.

A: How are your Spanish classes going?

B: In a way, it’s similar to the experience of learning Chinese. Some Spanish words are

similar to English ones, but I need to practice listening to native speakers and saying the

words myself.
