Chapter 13:States of Matter
Particle Motion
Why does the term kinetic make sense when talking about Particle Motion?
“Kinetic” refers to motion.
“Kinetic Energy” is the energy an object has because of its motion.
“Kinetic Theory”:“All matter consists of tiny particles that are in constant motion”
THEREFORE….
If particles are in constant motion and “Kinetic” refers to motion, the two correlate!
Q.E.D
How does a gas behave according to the “Kinetic Molecular Theory”?
The particles in a gas are considered to be small hard spheres with insignificant volume.
The motion of the particles in a gas is rapid, constant and random.
All collisions between particles in a gas are perfectly elastic.
Why is the motion of one particle independent of another particle in a gas sample?
The particles are relatively far apart.
Between these particles there is empty space.
Because there is empty space there are no attractive or repulsive forces existing between the particles.
Define Elastic Collision
In an elastic collision, kinetic energy is transferred without loss from one particle to another, so it remains constant.
Elastic collision occurs between gas particles.
