    Abstract

Despite the signi#cant advances made in many years of attempts to read peda-

gogic discourse from a linguistic perspective, as yet no overall theoretical format

has emerged which would read the distinctive features of the educational process

without overlooking signi#cant dimensions of education as institution, e.g. its

historicity and the role played in it by social protagonists (the state, teachers,

students). This paper will seek to formulate the main axes for a reading of ped-

agogic discourse, using the Hallidayan tradition as well as post-structuralist lin-

guistic concerns, particularly the notions of discourses, genres and identities.
