How drought helped drive a mighty civilisation to extinction

The Maya disappeared more than 1,000 years ago, leaving pyramids, a unique form of writing and a network of lost cities in the deserts and jungles of Central and South America. For two centuries archaeologists have speculated why their civilisation collapsed, with theories ranging from civil war to overpopulation and environmental degradation. Today, an international team of scientists publishes powerful evidence pointing to a series of devastating droughts over a period of 150 years, which played a pivotal role in ending one of the most intriguing cultures in human history.

Cores drilled into the muddy sediments of the Cariaco Basin of the southern Caribbean Sea have identified three intense droughts around ADS 10, AD860 and AD910, which correspond to the periods where the Maya are thought to have abandoned some of their cities. The scientists, led by Gerald Haug, professor of geology at the Geo-ForschungSzentrum institute in Potsdam, Germany, conclude in the journal Science that a change in the climate pushed the Maya civilisation into terminal decline. "These data suggest that a century-scale decline in rainfall put a general strain on resources in the region, which was then exacerbated by the abrupt drought events," they say.

The Mayan civilisation, which existed for about 2,000 years, disappeared around AD900. The Mayans mastered a system of counting, were able to chart the movements of the stars and planets

and established a rich commercial trade and ritual tradition based on bloodletting and human sacrifice.

Their disappearance went unnoticed until the early 19th century when an American explorer, John Lloyd Stephens, discovered the lost Maya city of Copan deep in the South American jungle. The civilisation stretched across much of what is now southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Its history extends over a period of two millenniums, with the culture blossoming and the population growing to between 3 million and 13 million people in the “classic” period between about AD250 and AD750.

But Professor Haug said the civilisation experienced a “demographic disaster” between AD750 and AD950. Many of the densely populated cities were suddenly emptied. Eventually the civilisation collapsed, with only a fraction of the Maya population surviving.

Some archaeologists suggested that the demise was caused by civil war between competing Maya groups. Others suggested migration, disease, over-farming, or a combination of these factors. The sediments from the Cariaco Basin off the coast of Venezuela contained seasonal layers of titanium deposited into the basin by local rivers − making the amount of the titanium an accurate indicator of regional rainfall.

Previously, archaeologists estimated the years when Maya cities were abandoned by analysing the last dates carved into the local monuments. Professor Haug found a remarkable match between this archaeological evidence and the dates of the worst periods of drought estimated from the lowest levels of titanium in the Carioca Basin.

Water was an important natural resource for the Mayan people −they went to great effort to collect rainwater in cisterns and to build an extensive network of canals and irrigation channels. For small villages, a relatively short drought of even a few years would not perhaps have caused mass deaths but for a large urban centre with a dense population such droughts could easily prove terminal, Professor Haug said.

Чорне море протягом тисячоліть залишалось особливим місцем на стику Європи й Азії. Різні ландшафти, змішання культур, мов і релігій перетворили Чорне море в унікальний регіон, де зустрічаються два світи − Схід і Захід. Тут зібралися разом усі перлини − виноградні й персикові схили, повітря, напоєне ароматами лаванди, кедрів та олеандрів, незабутній смак кримських, кавказьких і болгарських вин, розкіш і витонченість архітектури, таємничість стародавніх переказів. Це благодатне узбережжя, омиване теплим морем, почало заселятися близько 400 тисяч років тому. Свідками тих далеких часів залишилися печери неандертальського періоду в скелястій Кавказькій гряді й горах Криму. Сліди тієї далекої епохи губляться в знаменитій Мармуровій печері, що розташована на північно-західному схилі плато Чатир-Даг.

Близько 5 тисяч років тому на Західному Кавказі жили народи, що залишили після себе дольмени − зарослі мохом масивні кам’яні споруди епохи бронзи. Зводилися вони одночасно з Єгипетськими пірамідами і, можливо, мали подібні функції.

Наприкінці II тисячоліття до н. е. войовничі прибульці з півдня підкорили місцеві племена, а разом із загибеллю цих мужніх людей зникла і незвичайна культура.

На початку грецької колонізації Чорноморського узбережжя у греків з’являються міфи і легенди, пов’язані з цими місцями. Титан Прометей за наказом Зевса був прикутий ланцюгами до скелі на Кавказі за те, що подарував вогонь людям. Легендарний Одісей Гомера потрапляв у свої неймовірні пригоди саме на Чорному морі.

Греки засновували свої поселення і торгові колонії в зручних бухтах Риму і Кавказу, доставляли туди глиняний

посуд, тканини і вина, приносячи на північне узбережжя Чорного моря культуру і процвітання.

Однією з найбільш відомих грецьких колоній у Криму став Херсонес Таврійський, заснований у V столітті до н. е. вихідцями з Гераклеї Тонтійської, який знаходиться на території сучасного Севастополя. До наших днів збереглися величні захисні стіни, античний театр, житлові квартали і суспільні споруди − унікальні пам’ятки античної культури.

У І столітті до н. е. войовничі гуни зруйнували і спустошили міста Причорномор’я. Влада кочівників була недовговічною, і вже в І столітті н. е. на землі північного Причорномор’я приходять римляни, приносячи із собою досягнення своєї відмираючої цивілізації.

У VI столітті нашої ери Чорноморське узбережжя переходить під владу Візантії. Могутній сусід із південних берегів не лише розвиває торгові й політичні відносини, а й приносить на північні береги єдину релігію − християнство, яке з’являється тут на три століття раніше, ніж на Русі.

Уже сторіччя потому турецькі хозари закладають на території сучасного Криму оспіване у казках і переказах місто Бахчисарай. Легендарний бахчисарайський “Фонтан Сліз” − витвір іранського майстра Омера − місце поклоніння для всіх закоханих. Величний Ханський палац − єдина будівля, що залишилася від ханського гарему, повертає нас у той час, коли Бахчисарай був столицею могутнього Кримського Ханства і оселею династії Гиреїв.

У XII столітті середньовічні міста захоплюють жорстокі орди монголо-татарських кочівників. Вони осідають у гірських районах Криму, розграбовують і руйнують міста, знищують і поневолюють населення. Однак кілька сторіч потому ослабла монголо-татарська орда стає васалом Турецької імперії.

У XIII столітті на східному узбережжі Криму висаджуються генуезці. Вони засновують у мальовничій бухті на площі в тридцять гектарів грандіозну, неприступну з моря фортецю Солдая (сучасний Судак) із чотирнадцятьма бойовими баштами. Протягом двох століть тут вирувало життя, проходили

торги, аж поки в 1475 році порт не захопили турки.

It is said that people understand each other if they are bound up not only by family chains but also by so-called subconscious threads of mutual and invisible sense as if their lives are inseparable. Especially it concerns to uniovular twins referring to the Parapsychology. But the strongest power based on the real and unbreakable allegiance is granted only to animals which are capable of sincere and genuine trust. The story, I’m going to tell you, has happened in a small town of Arizona which bares the name Hayden.

Believe it or not but there exist some supernatural, inexplicable and overwhelming power or something sort of mystique net which links one person to another creature through epochs and times and also through the nature of their innate essence bearing a commonplace name “a soul”.

Hayden is known for its unique landscape and magnificent areas of forests and lakes with crystal-pure water. And there in the back of beyond you can find a sumptuous in architecture but so ramshackle a house near a quiet lake always covered in mist. A gorgeous and vast estate of Mr. Collins surrounded by impassable thickets of greenery growing on the hills over there still hides the secret of his family.

The only thing that makes that place different is its total and deathlike silence. A one living there could feel like being on the cloud nine. But DOG MY CAT no one is destined to enjoy living there because of that solitary soul hovering over that mystique house. The only being you may happen to get a notice of there is a vision of dog wandering and sniffing the air with a warning and daring look in a long way off. His entire figure radiates a worn distinction beaten and slashed in the course of his life. So morose and molested he reminds a forgotten soul which is held up in the time. People who saw him tried to come closer but they only chanced to hear an echo of distant barking and his dissolving in the air.

It is said that happy families are all alike, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. There lived a happy family in the house. Mr. Collin in his green years was a young and attractive lad. He got

acquainted with Angelica (his future wife) in a jam situation which changed their lives totally and irreversibly. He bumped into Angy on the bridge while running to a company which was head-hunting for skilled and punctual plant-workers. And in that very moment a sparkle of affection scorched their hearts. At the very beginning of their relationship Brian appeared to be a real master of paying courts and flattering. That was his fad and the girl found it to be an engaging trait for her. The girl had not succumbed to him for some time but Brian was a good hit and thought to himself “A cat may look at a king”. Riding on the carrousels on amusement park, having pleasant conversations in cafés drinking coffee with tasty ice-cream crossed with escaping the police for pilfering at the markets and standing on the razor edge while fighting with burglars in empty streets consumed by gloom of the night. Oh that accidents made Angelica get covered with goose bumps but Brian’s skin was also decorated with delicate scars left by that blackguards’ sharpened knives. He didn’t give a damn to that trifle. The only words he pronounced were “Who fought them? – The cat did it! Ha-ha!” and on the instant got a painful slap right in the face paid by ferocious Angy who then was kissing and stroking his swollen cheeks and bleeding lips. Yeah, every cloud has a silver lining and that caress was a silver lining for Brian. It must be a passion expressed in their own unique way with pangs and kisses, bites and hugs.

And it finally came to the next step in their life. I mean the marriage. Angelica felt nervous as a cat when Brian offered her his hand and heart. A thunderlike “would you marry me” pierced the air and it wasn’t a quick question for her. The lady was head over hills in love with him and he was a big city cat with the girls laid in piles at his feet but no one was worth the one chosen. The chap in opposition was afraid not to make a mess on it. Brian was capable of sweeping a girl off her feet. But as you know something always appears to stand in the way of their personal happiness. At that point the executioners were Angy’s parents. They warned her not to bray at him but she only scorned their wordy pinches regarding them close-minded and old-fashioned people. They even tried to get her

grounded like a little girl. That was the last drop of distrust for her to taste.

A young family despite parents’ will moved to a shabby looking but still cosy house in a lovely place far from those problems and dissatisfaction. Before long the house was filled with the baby’s cry and all that sobbing and irritating wails, nights when both the parents slept not a wink made them fill a real and pure thrill while looking at that little creature Soon Brian was inspired with an idea to buy a little puppy for Jimmy to play with. To tell the truth Angy wasn’t that kind of people who adored pets and the news stunned her a bit but Brian then got her approval. Opened the whining box Jimmy became frenzied with delight. He took of the red-haired ball of fur and pronounced the only word “Rusty” which was then given the pet. Both the parents had their heads in the clouds that everything will be going well even too perfect. Jimmy was being brought up and the dog growing too.

He became strong and compact, quick and could snap everybody trying to hurt his family. That feeling of obedience persuaded him all the time and was inescapable. It may have been a trait of his brute kin or a real sense inherent in the human nature. Was he an animal? Was he a humanlike creature? He acquired features of a true friend who might defend and protect, stand up to any threat and die for the one he belonged to. He was better than any man. Jimmy and Rusty were friends of blood which was of equal running in their veins. They could play in Jimmy’s room which remind an assembly hall in size and empty space that it was possible to run there messing about with so much fun. The only thing which could make all the members of the family feel like a cat on hot bricks was the arrival of their relatives who on seeing the dog (the granny called it a “dirty little bastard”) reproached Angelica for her having tolerated all that fuss and hubbub. She really didn’t let the smallest doubt to get stealthily in her mind. Jimmy and Rusty adored to hang out together somewhere out the house. When they were exploring the wood the dog seemed to resemble the cat among pigeons. He was trotting about sniffing the air and then rooting up the ground in search of something. Having noticed it the boy wanted to satisfy

Rusty’s searches for their being not futile. He became to dig in bones for his friend to find them and taste as an award for his affords. The cat it gloves catches no mice as people say. But “Rusty was a hard-worker in the field of mining” – sometimes Jimmy said such a phrase to make fun of his dog. Once at the laid table the family were dining and Angy occasionally let the cat out of the beg informing of her being pregnant again. Brian nearly choked on hearing that news but still he posed an extremely happy man with a worn expectance on his face. Frankly speaking he found himself able to chicken out. But being a hard nut to crack he thought to himself “What does one more baby can do to him” and then wailed with terror. But it was impossible even for Angy to make a cat speak. Brian put on a mask of a lucky man. He was really so but not ready yet for such changes. Between whiles he sank in a chair and opened the recesses of his memory discovering the days of his youth and regarding that times to be happier. He looked at younger people and envied them but it’s known that the grass is always greener on the other side. When the new life began to glow I the house it was like a copy-cat of Jimmy in his cub-years. The baby seemed to be in competition with him in increased weeping and blubbering which made everybody delirious about that. So finally everything seemed to come right and quite good but one day when the parents were at work and Jimmy at school little Maggie got out of the crib and began to rummage about. It was a nasty weather that day a horrid thunderstorm and the lightning hit the dry pine near the house. The deadly flame spreaded with an inordinate speed and reached the house soon but then Maggie felt something snatched by the overall and rushed through the deadly circles of flame. The whole house was like a fire ball ready to set off. The little child could not perceive what was going on. The Rescue service had already been on its way, Brian having heard about the accident rushed home and having arrived he couldn’t bear the look of the burnt building. Maggie!!! Maggie!!! We must have lost her. He squatted and dripped salty tears rolling upon his cheeks. The harsh smoke covered the vicinity with a gray blanket of mist which was reflected in the water of the lake like a vast cloud. But the next instant something dark and weak appeared at the entrance bearing

something in his jaws. That was Rusty. Scorched, bleeding barely treading but advancing ahead he reached Brian and at that moment Angy and Jimmy run up to him. The thing he was carrying was a little bundle of life hardly breathing but still smiling in confusion. Jimmy cried with happiness and handed her sister over to his father who could hardly comprehend what had happened. Rusty at that moment was lying on the raw ground releasing husky breaths, gasping the air with intensified efforts. Jimmy put his Rusty’s head on his knees and said not a word just looked at his friend and pressed him in the last embrace. Rusty’s eyelids closed up and he plunged into a silence.

The family found a new home for themselves and started their life from a clear sheet. But the recollections of the daring friend who scarified his life in exchange for the little creature’s future were embedded in their souls in token of the gratitude lasting for ever.

And even now passing by that house listen to the wind and you may chance to hear an indomitable barking of a rusty figure slipping in a distance and dissolving in the air like a fake mirage, like a looming hero of the past.

Just what is “annualism”?There seem to be an awful lot of books these days where the

author shows their power of endurance by doing something odd for a year. But why? Here's the drill.

You’re thinking. How hard would it be to live on Smarties for a year? Or spend a year in a toilet cubicle? Or both? Then you could write a book about it. You could call it LooTube. Or Under the Lid. The papers would all do features. How could any journalist resist a person spending a year in the toilet? So you get plenty of free publicity for the book.

There have indeed been a lot of these annualist books in the past five or six years, concedes Graeme Neill of the Bookseller magazine.

“Publishing is like any form of the art. Where there has been a success, a hit will come out of nowhere, other publishers will look at it and follow it”.

And there is something about these year-long ideas that entices publishers.

“It is like pitching a movie in one sentence”, says Neill. “It's interesting to talk about and it makes for very readable, straightforward copy”.

And of course, it’s part of a wider genre where the writer features heavily in their own work, says Neill. “It’s journalists

putting themselves at the centre of things. They are protagonists in their own narrative”.

Liz Jones, who has written extensively in newspapers and in books about her marriage and other parts of her life, is the queen of the genre. And if Liz Jones is the queen, Danny Wallace is the king. His books Yes Man, about his decision to say yes to everything, Join Me, about the cult he started, and Friends Like These, about his summer tracking down his old friends, have all sold well.

And of course, many would argue that there is nothing wrong with a journalist putting themselves at the centre of the story. What binds all the “annualist” titles together is that while their “year-long ordeal” might be classified as a stunt, they have serious things to say about their subject matter and its importance to society.

When a journalist goes to live in the country, or tries to be environmentally-minded for a year, one can see where they are coming from.

And there is a long and honourable history of “stunt” journalism. It goes all the way back to Nellie Bly, the pioneering American journalist.

In 1887, she infiltrated an asylum by pretending to be mentally ill in order to investigate conditions there. Her expose, Ten Days in a Mad-House, outlined the grim conditions, rotten food, and beatings that constituted the life of patients. As well as being a literary sensation, it caused an outcry and an investigation that led to more funding and better conditions for the asylums.

Jack London's The People of the Abyss at the beginning of the 20th Century continued this inheritance, with the American author writing about East End poverty after living in workhouses himself. George Orwell took a similar path in Down and Out in Paris and London.

But if “annualism” is really a thing of the past five or six years, then it might be suggested that the most inspirational work in the canon is Morgan Spurlock's 2004 documentary Super Size Me. Spurlock famously lived on McDonald’s three times a day for a month, with consequences for his health, in order to expose the dangers of the fast-food culture.

Ultimately, we are impressed by feats of endurance. For many readers, it adds authenticity to an act of criticism.

Кожна міфологія світу має своє соціальне підґрунтя. Захоплююча грецька міфологія складалася за умов рабовласництва, тож її легенди оспівували богів і героїв, далеких від земних справ, від настроїв народу. Чвари і конфлікти Олімпу носять суто аристократичний, панський характер. У давніх українців не було рабства. Вони жили дружними родинами, задругами, де панувала общинна рівність. Тож і персонажі їхньої міфології були простими, людяними, близькими, земними. У грецькій міфології лише один титан (не бог!) Прометей іде до людей, несе їм вогонь, тепло. І на це Олімп реагує, як відомо, зло, жорстоко − приковує Прометея до скелі й посилає щоденно орла, аби він клював героєві груди і пожирав печінку (характерно: Геракл звільняє Прометея, вбиває орла за згодою Зевса, якому хотілося більшої слави та «авторитету» своєму синові).

У давніх українців майже кожен бог іде до людей. Згадуваний уже тут Сварог − найдавніший бог Сонця − передає світло своєму синові Дажбогові й спускається в поетичній уяві українців на землю, щоб навчити людей користуватися вогнем та ковалювати. Він також запроваджує шлюб, викувавши першу обручку. Не сидиться у Вирії (сонмищі українських богів) і Дажбогові: передавши Сонце смаглочолому Хорсові, він спускається опікувати ліси, поля, засівати землю квітами і

зіллям. Навіть богиня неба Коляда покидає Вирій, аби щороку взимку, за небезпечних обставин, ховаючись від ворожих сил, народжувати в дніпрових сагах Божича − нове Сонце, Новий рік. Власне у Вирії, за легендами, перебувають лише найпервісніші боги − Род (Сокіл) та Білобог.

У грецькій міфології лише Пан є богом родючості та опікуном лісів, садів, ланів й усієї природи. Але Пан − напівлюдина-напівцап − є предметом глузів, зверхньої поблажливості “іменитих” богів Олімпу. А в давньоукраїнських міфах переважна більшість богів опікує природу, ратаїв, худобу, води, ліси, різні насадження, це − Дажбог, Волос, Мокоша, Жива, Лада, Лель, Овсень, Ярило, Купайло, Жицень та інші божества родючості. Якщо в стародавніх греків і римлян народ святкував лише свято бога виноробства Діоніса (Вакха), то в давніх українців усенародні гуляння відбувалися майже щомісяця, і головне − вони були підпорядковані трудовому ритмові життя, порам року, сезонним циклам певних робіт. Бучними, масовими, веселими були свята Коляди − зустріч нового Сонця, Нового року, Лади − зустріч весни, Ярила − початок і кінець сівби, Купайла − зустріч літа, Живи − початок жнив, Овсеня − обжинки, Жиценя − завершення всіх польових робіт і т. д.

І недарма стародавні румуни та молдавани − могутнє пагіння романського древа − прийняли саме українську міфологію: працьовитим освоювачам придунайських родючих низин, затятим хліборобам і виноградарям чужі були і Юпітер, і Марс, і Венера. Next weekend I went to Jack Benton’s Casino to see the whole state of affairs. Jack was playing, he was calm and he was raising stakes. At that very moment I got the desire to do the same – count cards and win big money! Jack took me under his wing, so we started making 15,000–20,000$ a week. The whole world was our oyster. But nobody couldn’t notice that fact. Of course we got problems with the owner – Mr. Benton.

We were staying in his study thinking that we tried our best and knew the rest as usual.

– So girls, I must admit you have tricked me. But this doesn’t mean this is the end. You thought out of the box, you sly bastards (chuckling). Now, sweethearts, you owe me 500 grands for your fraud. AND WE DID IT!! Jack and me made 300,000, it was well enough for one evening (for somebody it was enough to live without cares for several years). − Hey Mr! Come here for a while! What’s your name?− Frank. Frank Mallcow.− He might be that Frank. This dead guy was crying this name

before they murdered him.− Mr Mallcow, do you know this man? Then I saw a dead body of Jack. He was slaughtered. Gosh,

The global epidemic of obesity − which now affects 300 million people − is a legacy of evolution and cannot be tackled unless we recognise that the disease is a fundamental consequence of our innate biology. People from Africa, South-east Asia and Polynesia are especially prone to obesity because they are more likely to have inherited the genes that encourage the storage of fat.

There is growing evidence for believing that genes strongly influence whether someone is likely to become overweight in a society where calories are easily and cheaply obtained.

One might ponder why, in our current environment where almost everyone has essentially free access to calories, anyone is thin. The answer appears to reside in our genes and the way in which they interact with environmental factors.

A growing amount of evidence suggests that people from some ethnic groups are more likely than others to suffer obesity when they adopt a Western lifestyle and diet. They range from the Pima Indians of Arizona to the Polynesian islanders.

Obesity now affects almost one in three Americans − a 10 per cent increase in the past decade − but it is markedly higher among

black and native Americans than in Americans descended from Europeans.

The difference in obesity rates between ethnic groups could have something to do with their respective genetic histories. For people who lived in times of privation, such as hunter-gatherers, food was only sporadically available and the risk of famine was ever-present.

In such an environment, genes that predispose to obesity increase energy stores and provide a survival advantage in times of famine. This is the so-called thrifty g’ene hypothesis.

For people descended from the inhabitants of the Fertile Crescent [in the Middle East] or, more recently, Western societies, the risk of starvation was markedly reduced by the domestication of plants and animals and the ability to store food.

But these developments also exposed those who became obese to significant health problems. In this environment, selection against obesity might be expected.

Humans today carry the genetic legacy of both type of environments. The reality might be that the obese carry the “hunter-gatherer” genes and the lean carry the Fertile Crescent genes.

Even though obesity is in our genes, a minor change in lifestyle can still affect the chances of a person becoming overweight.

By walking an extra mile or eating about 100 calories fewer than usual each day, an overweight person could typically prevent an extra 2 lb (1kg) increase in weight each year.

When we look at what's causing the obesity epidemic, it doesn't look like it's our biology gone bad, it’s the environment acting on our ancient biology. We need to look at what’s happening to changes in energy intake and physical activity, and then determine the extent of the problem.

української. Це лише з одного боку вважається не життям, а існуванням. З іншого боку, незгодних письменників-моралістів завжди рятувало гасло про те, що не можна творити задля заробітку. Мовляв, порядному авторові треба якраз заробляти (наприклад, журналістикою) для того, щоби потім спокійнісінько творити. Видаючи створене за власний кошт.

Виявляється, сьогодні навіть це не зовсім так, і власним коштом друкуються хіба що закінчені графомани.

Адже нині існує чудова лазівка для тих, хто пише українською, оскільки багато видавництв на кшталт “Фоліо” чи “Клубу Сімейного Дозвілля”, які допіру відверто ігнорували укрсучліт, засновують премії, виголошують конкурси і полюють за україномовними авторами. Тим не менш, здобуття автором власного голосу – навіть завдяки “російськомовним” видавництвам – це подія. Сьогодні вже не актуальна тема робить твір видатним, а сама лише присутність уславленого автора на кшталт Ю. Андруховича чи О. Забужко. Вони можуть роками нічого не видавати, випросивши грант і пишучи замість роману або власну біографію, як Ю. Андрухович в “Таємниці”, або біографію чужу, як О. Забужко в “Notre Dame D’Ukraine”. Але це музейний виняток із правил вулично-літературного руху, тому звернемося до “живого” життя.

Отже, відтоді, як у наших краях з’явилося красиве слово “постмодернізм”, криза в сучасній українській літературі стала відчуватися гостріше. Наприклад, виявилося, що кризою охоплена не література, а літературний, вибачте, дискурс. Це коли колишня ідеологічна влада змінюється на владу грошей, а процес дискутування й балачок заступає результат у вигляді книжок. Ось після цього криза й вийшла на очі.

Здавалося, зі здобуттям Україною незалежності літературне життя завирує з небаченою силою, злетять у піднебесся книжкові тиражі, а літературний колгосп СПУ розвалиться, як СРСР. Втім, “живе” життя відкинуло у безвість усіх ставлеників патріотичного прогресизму – від І. Дзюби до І. Драча – і звернулося до цікавіших для мас анархістів типу Ю.Винничука і Л. Подерев’янського. Опозиція ж колишніх “просвітян” змаліла до змагання між українством і фемінізмом. Таким чином, велика мрія про перемогу Кобзаревого слова обернулася тимчасовим тріумфом постмодерністських анахоретів, а література змінилася на літературний процес і гонитву за швидким успіхом, а не за надійним читачем.

Успіх в Україні, аби ви знали, завжди підозрілий, а ініціатива карається на пню. Преміям тут не радіють, а кидаються вираховувати, кому ж не дали. При цьому, щоби отримати офіційну Шевченківську премію, членові Спілки письменників треба просто зайняти чергу, а для премії неофіційної на кшталт заснованої на РС “Бі-Бі-Сі” треба... просто мати друзів на РС “Бі-Бі-Сі”. Українське щастя – взагалі небезпечний оксюморон, а успіх – своєрідна форма компромісу: я повірив – решта влаштується саме по собі. Наприклад, Л. Подерев’янський, маючи репутацію підпільного генія, правильно розіграв власне “дисидентство”, видавши у “Фоліо” повну збірку творів з матюками. Мабуть, вперше в історії літератури з’явився прошарок письмаків, які не мають ідеологічної бази, і це вважається прогресом.

Fortunately, Kate came back. What did she see? It was the dumbest thing Bob’d ever done. This reckless man was lying under the bed and couldn’t do anything. There was a well-known jackboot-destroyer in his left hand. “I can’t leave you even for a second, honey,-she said disappointedly. – I won’t ask you what you are doing on the floor and what was wrong with that vase which is now broken! I just came to conclusion that I must get you by the short hairs!” As a result Bob had to eat a crow and laugh at himself. “I love you!” – he smiled. He stood up, came up to his wife and repeated the words again. I had almost forgotten how delicious steamed suet pudding can be. But ten I was overcome with the urge to try making Sussex pond pudding. It was partly the name that fascinated me, but also the comfort factor. The idea of suet seems to put some people off, though. I’ve been trying to persuade my pastry chefs at work to put it on the menu, but they seem to resist. Was it something stodgy they ate down the pub?

It is admittedly difficult to make an individual Sussex pond pudding, unless you find fresh tiny lemons like the ones used for Moroccan pickles, soil’s better suited to home cooking than restaurants. Still, maybe one day they’ll fulfil my odd demands.

Anyway, I decided to make it at home and see if this traditional pudding lives up to its name. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I poured heaploads of butter and sugar on to the lemon that had been stabbed with a roasting fork to allow its juices to escape.

The four hours it took to steam the pudding seemed interminable, and I could hardly wait until the moment arrived and I could turn the thing out. It was like one of those school experiments − but a lot slower. When the time was up I turned it over on to a plate. My faith and patience was rewarded. I’d struck gold. A stream of fragrant, thick and golden liquid seeped out of the pudding.

What they lack in stylish presentation, steamed suet puddings make up for with the flavour that’s absorbed into the dough. The suet melts into the flour the way butter or lard does when you make pastry but has a distinctive, comforting texture. Beef suet has something of

an image problem, as it doesn’t fit comfortably into a healthy eating or weight-watching programme. Vegetarian suet doesn’t give savoury puddings the same flavour − and if you’re making a beef stew, there’s no harm in suet dumplings to match. But vegetarian suet is fine for the Sussex pond pudding.

Pudding-making like this is in danger of becoming a forgotten art. Some restaurants are offering comforting old-fashioned desserts, and I see signs of them creeping back on to menus to jog memories of childhood puddings.

Can the internet cure insomnia?One out of 10 Britons can't fall asleep at night. But do new

online treatments for insomnia mean a cure is just a few clicks away?Midnight’s not so bad. Some quick number crunching and you

figure you can still get six hours of shut-eye before facing the morning.

Two in the morning is a little bleaker. You’re down to four hours and that’s if sleep comes right away.

At three, those glowing red numbers on the alarm clock seem to be screaming one thing: “You’re not getting more than three hours tonight”.

By four, you're ready to give up, grab a laptop and while away the remaining hours with some mindless web surfing. But maybe it’s not such a bad idea − that computer screen could just be the solution for insomniacs.

Help with sleeplessness is available on the NHS, but places can be limited and waiting lists long. But these are free, and the online courses are currently offered on a commercial basis from the United States.

It’s a promise that reads rather like an e-mail spam subject: “End sleepless nights once and for all − at home”. But over the past few years, researchers have been developing internet-based courses designed to do exactly that.

Now some US studies claim that on-screen therapy may be just as effective as face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy.

Everyone who has had a few bad nights of sleep knows the folk remedies. Drink warm milk, take a hot bath, sip herbal tea, or count sheep.

No luck? It used to seem like the only option was to hope sleep would come, or to place yourself on a waiting list for a cognitive behavioural therapist, suffering through wakeful nights and groggy days in the meantime.

“We’re talking about the most common mental health problem in the UK, and probably the world”, says Colin Espie, director of the University of Glasgow Sleep Centre. “But less than half of people with insomnia mention it to their doctors”.

Many feel insomnia is too trivial to mention to their GP, or they think it’s something they can manage on their own, says Derk-Jan Dijk, Professor of Sleep and Physiology at the University of Surrey.

“It’s a cultural thing that sleep is not important”, he says. “You may not want to admit that you didn’t sleep very well during the night because you were worried about that meeting with your manager”.

And even if people are ready to talk about it, they may not have the resources to do so. Millions of people in the UK have chronic insomnia, but only several hundred psychologists are trained in this type of therapy. The NHS is working to make treatment easier to find. The Department of Health says more than 800 cognitive behavioural therapists are now in training, and 3,600 are expected to be trained by 2011.

And online treatments may have the potential to ease this pressure. It’s a little more modern than, say, sheep counting, but researchers are focused on bringing insomnia treatment to the internet. It’s about accessibility, says Dr Espie, who has examined the approach taken by online courses.

With online automated courses, therapy that is typically only available on an individual or small group basis can be multiplied to reach many more, says Dr Richard Bedrosian, an American researcher who developed an online insomnia program.

Some experts aren’t yet convinced, though. While Dr Espie, of the University of Glasgow Sleep Centre, says automated systems can help make insomnia treatment widely available, others think effective treatment requires the human touch.

He threw off the letter, as he knew every word that will follow by heart. That was lasting for 2 months already. He knew, that his father’s business would give him enough money to be more than well to do. But he also realized, that he would lose his freedom and become just a dependent part of his father, not an important part, actually, the same as his brother. He left the house in order to escape from his parents’ tyranny and the necessity to obey all their wills. He found a work to be able to rent the room. And than he met her. She lived on the other side of the river, and looking through the window he tried to find the light of her room among millions of others.

“My little girl! Love is usually poisoned with lie. Those city dandies, who are always cutting a dash on public, are fickle, capricious and guileful. I can’t believe a spoilt reach boy to leave all goods he has! I can’t believe him being over you! You are surely caught in a trap! I suspect that guy to be a fraud! You are not too beautiful to make any worthwhile man fall in love with you, poor lamb, you know that well. My silly naïve little girl! Her mother did not have any other world except the farm. She only wished her daughter to follow her steps and lead her life on the comparative safety farm, no matter if the life could be better anywhere else. She saw her surrounding with kids, cooking dinner for her gloomy, indifferent, a little bit rude husband. Without any silly love – fidelity and duty only.

Girl’s beautiful eyes filled with tears and she leant her gentle head. “Poor mom!” She was really pretty, in spite of her mother’s opinion, and really intelligent, in contrast to her parents and brother. She didn’t want to have the same life as her mother had, believing it’s the only possible. She stood up and came to the window. “He is

In two weeks they got married in secret and moved to another city. Their parents got the letter, where they informed them about their decision. Both families were against this, but nobody could stop them.

They lived together, worked together, had having rest together. They both were demons for work. They have adopted at living on another place and won respect and support of inhabitants. In two years after that one famous woman of the world was fixing dinner and haughty parents of that boy were invited. There they have met a young spouse, shining in the light of success and honor. And the girl’s mom was surprised and even disappointed to discover, when they have made peace to each other, her daughter being deeply happy.

Nothing could have stopped them. Now, nothing could make them apart. Living in each other pocket as earlier.

How Sunday trading changed the UKFifteen years ago, Sunday trading laws were introduced that led

to a national love affair with shopping. The “day of rest” was never the same again. Church worship, Sunday papers, no rush-hour ... some things tell you it’s Sunday.

“If England has not been invaded since 1066, it is because foreigners dread having to spend a Sunday there”. So noted a retired British Army officer in a French work of fiction from the 1950s, a time when Sundays in the UK were a bit different from how they are now.

Even in the early 1990s, it was a day that commonly began with church worship, followed by roast lunch with the family and time at home together. For many people today, that is still the norm, but a piece of legislation has made Sundays generally more active.

Although some shops had defied the law, the 1994 Sunday Trading Act allowed all smaller shops in England and Wales to open all day. Larger ones are still restricted to six hours of business between 10am and 6pm and cannot open on Easter Sunday.

In Scotland, shops determine their own hours although - as they can south of the border − people working in retail and betting can opt out of working on Sundays if they wish.

The trading act was passed despite stiff resistance from trade unions, religious groups and even some large stores such as Marks and Spencer and Waitrose. Eight years earlier, attempts by Margaret

Thatcher to deregulate Sunday trading led to her only Parliamentary defeat during her time as prime minister.

So when the law was finally passed, it was a huge step, says Professor Jeremy Baker, of ESCP Europe Business School.

Sunday was a very symbolic day. It was a religious day and even for those people who are not religious it was a family day, a home day. So the idea of going out to the shops on this home day was genuinely shocking to people.

“You were supposed to spend the time at home, however boring it was. It was considered to be good for you. You were showing loyalty to the family”.

The act helped to develop a new shopping culture and a new leisure pursuit, he says, but at a cost.

“Going to the shops became an event, even if you didn’t buy anything, because you’d go and you’d walk around and have coffee. The shopping mall as a new city centre was very much accelerated by the law”.

But the shopping boom that followed is now coming back to haunt the country in recession, says Mr Baker, because there are just too many shops.

Shops in many towns and villages remain closed on Sundays, and in those areas little has changed. Public transport still has a Sunday timetable all over the country, while most banks and theatres remain closed.

But shopping malls and city centres are as busy as any other day. More than half the population regularly goes shopping on a Sunday, which means that hundreds of thousands of people have to work.

Where retail led, pubs followed. A year after the trading act, pubs were allowed to open all day on a Sunday. Previously they had to close between 3pm and 7pm.

The proliferation of televised football on Sundays − there are sometimes more top-level matches on a Sunday than a Saturday − provided pubs with an added attraction. Horse racing, cricket and rugby have followed its example.

It all means that Sundays are losing their intended meaning, says John Roberts, director of the Lord’s Day Observance Society, because when God created the world he set aside one day that was different. It was also the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

“We’ve lost family life and one of the reasons we’ve lost it is that we have lost the principle that Sunday was for the family. There’s a moral, social and economic element to this. I love sport but I reject the need for sport on a Sunday because people need a break. There are six other days to watch football”.

Як з’ясувало дослідження, проведене фахівцями Гамбурзького центру захисту прав споживачів, найменше інформації надається саме про “найбільш небезпечні” продукти, такі, як ковбаси, молочні вироби та солодощі. Виявилося, що лише половина продуктів містить на упаковці “велику вісімку” − інформацію про основні вісім параметрів, важливі для здорового харчування: енергетична цінність, білки, вуглеводи, цукор, жири, жирові кислоти, баластні речовини та натрій або сіль. 15 відсотків з-понад 3500 тисяч досліджених продуктів не містили жодної інформації навіть про калорійність.

Найменш відвертими виявилися провідні виробники солодощів, такі, як Ferrero, Storck та Haribo. На останньому місці – виробники відомих в усьому світі квадратних шоколадок Ritter Sport, у яких не маркований жоден продукт. Натомість найсумліннішим є виробник молочної продукції Danone. Тим часом захисники прав споживачів наголошують на ключовій ролі супермаркетів – саме вони диктують виробникам правила гри.

Як приклад наводять дискаунт-мережу Aldi: понад 90 відсотків продуктів, які тут продаються, марковані “великою вісімкою”. Деякі виробники, такі як Storck та Haribo, роблять маркування виключно на продуктах, які поширюються через мережу Aldi. Як виявилося, саме дискаунтери нині найбільш активно відстоюють відповідне маркування. Слідом за Aldi йде ще одна “дешева” мережа − Lidl. “Ми закликаємо торгівців тиснути на постачальників в інтересах споживачів”, − йдеться у заяві Гамбурзького центру захисту прав споживачів.
