Course Objectives
To improve students' ability to listen for and identify English speakers ideas and purposes;
To improve students' ability to discuss formal and/or abstract issues in English;
To improve students' ability to read a wide variety of authentic English texts on different topics;
To improve students' ability to write in English effectively for different purposes (personal profile, a news column expressing your opinion, a film review), and
last but not the least, to interest students in regular and effective self-learning.
Course Description
Welcome to Freshman English and to university life!!! As an advanced-level English course, this course is designed to help you improve your English four skillsspeaking and listening, reading and writingso that you can use them in real life and also to develop your habits and methods in autonomous learning. The textbook we use is topic-based. Through either reading or listening to some interesting passages, you are then given opportunities to practice speaking out your ideas and then putting them down in writing.
The topics covered in the first semester range from personal issues (names and opitions) to worldwide concerns about urban environment, justice and WikiLeaks. These interesting topics will attract you to continue to explore in order to learn English and learn in English effectively.
As for autonomous learning (or self-learning), we will utilize the abundant materials available at Fu Jen and do it in groups. You can design your groups learning methods and schedule. As a group, you are to present your learning as if you were teachers to our class at a time you choose, and, towards the end of this semester, you are to write a reflection journal on your self-learning.
