1 俄巴底亞書導論 以東的地理及歷史背景 以東之地又名西珥(創三十二 3,三十六 202131;民二十四 18),位於死海東部和南 部,亦即撒烈河谷和阿卡巴灣(the Gulf of Aqabah)之間。沿亞拉巴谷往南,從基尼烈湖直到阿 卡巴灣,東面地勢險惡多山,有時高達海拔一○七○公尺。以東境內有兩條當時的交通要道─ ─亦即王道(King's Highway)和沿亞拉巴谷修築的路。由於以東是控制南北貿易的樞紐,它的 國庫因此十分富足,但也因而成為他國攻擊的目標。 聖經描寫以東人是以掃的後裔(創三十六,特別是 1 9 節),雖然考古出土物顯示該地 有更早的居民。聖經之外最早提及該地區的資料包括埃及的亞瑪納( Amarna)書信,時間最早 可溯及西元前十四世紀(見 IBD 1, pp.3739);另外在蘭塞王二世時(西元前十三世紀末期), 亦曾數度提及西珥之民 1 。聖經的記錄顯示,以東人和以色列人雖然並非總是關係和睦,但一直 時有來往。 以色列人出埃及之後,以東拒讓以色列人行經以東(民二十 1421;士十一 1718),隨 後巴蘭又預言以東被以色列征服(民二十四 18)。以色列在掃羅執政時曾與以東爭戰(撒上十 47 ),雖然以東人多方反抗(王上十一 14 22 ),但仍在大衛時被征服(撒下八 13 14RSV,及 NIV 邊注;王上十一 1516),並在所羅門時遭到剝削(王上九 2628)。西元 前第九世紀約沙法執政時,以東人和摩押人、亞捫人聯合攻擊猶大國(代下二十 12)。約蘭年 間,以東更成功地背叛猶大,脫離她的權下,享有較大的自由約四十年之久(王下八 2022代下二十一 810)。 西元前第八世紀初,亞瑪謝率領猶大之民再取以東並大肆殺戮(王下十四 7;代下二十五 1112),一直遠征至西拉。隨後,在猶大亞哈斯王時以東再度入侵,擄掠百姓(代下二十八 17),擺脫了以色列的控制,自此未再臣服於以色列。 在亞述時期,至從西元前七三四年開始,以東後成為亞述 2 與巴比倫國。他打算謀反(二十七),但並無跡象顯示他們試圖付諸。聖經及經外的資料清楚路撒冷滅亡(西元前 587 年)時的情形 以斯拉續篇卷》 I Esdras)四 45 指責以東 焚燒耶路撒殿,但此未經證實參︰哀2122)。 西元前六世紀,以東勢。由考古遺跡看出當地顯有城鎮棄置 、居民外情形〔參《馬 喀比書上卷》 1 Macc.)五 653 。從西元前六世紀末至西元前四世紀,阿拉在該地區的勢(有關阿拉人當時的影響力參︰尼二 19,四 7,六 1),尤其巴提一的亞拉Nabataeans)。以東人被迫流落其中部分居在猶大的南地,此地後來從關的名以土買」Idumaea)為人所《馬喀比書上卷》294 由於該地區的考古證據文獻十分稀少且模糊不清,上述重現的以東歷史乃臆測及二資料為基1 POTT, p.231. 2 ANET, p.282. 3 POTT, p.243. 4 有關以東歷史宗教文化詳細研究請參閱 POTT, pp.229258俄巴底亞書大綱
