1. You have already learned the direct object pronouns le, la, and les. Now, you will learn the indirect object pronouns lui and leur. Observe the difference between a direct and an indirect object in the following sentences.
Paul lance le ballon à Luc.
Paul lance le ballon.
Paul lance le ballonà Luc.

In the preceding sentence, le ballon is the direct object because it is the direct receiver of the action of the verb. What does Paul throw? The ball. The indirect object indicates to whom the ball is thrown. Luc is the indirect object of the verb. To whom does Paul throw the ball? To Luc. Note that the indirect object is preceded by the preposition à—à Luc.

2. The indirect object pronouns in French are lui and leur. Note that the masculine and feminine forms are the same. Study the following chart.

1. The pronoun en is used to replace a noun that is introduced by de or any form of de—du, de la, de l’, des. En refers mostly to things.

2. You also use the pronoun en with numbers or expressions of quantity. Note that in this case en refers not only to things but also to people.
