حديث:172

ثني أبي عن عائشة رضي الله ثنا هشام قال حد ثنا يحيى حد د حد ثنا مسد 3831 - حدعنها قالت كان يوم عاشوراء يوما تصومه قريش في الجاهلية وكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصومه فلما قدم المدينة صامه وأمر بصيامه فلما نزل رمضان كان من

شاء صامه ومن شاء لا يصومه Narrated`Aisha:'Ashura'(i.e.thetenthofMuharram)wasadayonwhichthetribeofQuraishusedtofastinthepre-lslamicperiodofignorance.TheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)alsousedtofastonthisday.-BeforeProphethoodandafterProphethoodalsoSowhenhemigratedtoMedina,hefastedonitandordered(theMuslims)tofastonit.WhenthefastingofRamadanwasenjoined,itbecameoptionalforthepeopletofastornottofastonthedayofAshura.InthedaysofJahiliyyahthequrayshwouldfastTheywouldalsodohaj,umrah,performsalahintheirownwayalso.Theyperformedmanyrituals.Buttheirworhsipwasnotacceptedbecauseoftheirshirk.Theiraqeedah//beliefwascorrupt.Andthisissomethignweneedtounderstandaswell.Nomatterhowrighteousapersonmayappear,andhowmanyoutwardlyritualstheyperform,iftheirbeliefiscorruptthatisproblematic.TheArabswouldworshipmanyidols,suchaslaat,uzzaa,etc.theywouldoffersacriOiceontheirname,rubthebloodoftheirritualslaughter,dedicatemilketc.intheirnameoftheiridols.TheyworshippedthemwiththeassumptionthattheywoulddrawthemclosertoAllah.ThePRophet(s)warnedthemagainstthis,andtheygotupset.Zaidb.NufaylalsosaidtothemthatAllahcreatedtheanimal,sentwaterfromthesky,madeplantsgrow,etc.andthenyouslaughterthis

animalinthenameofyouridols?Wehavebeentught:myprayer,mysacriOice,mylifeanddeathallareforAllahalone.ThequrayshthoughttheywereuponthereligionofIbrahim,butinrealitytheywereuponshirk.Alltheirevilactions,shaytanbeautiOiedforthem.Thatyoupleasetheseidolsandtheywillgetthingsdoneforyou…andmuslimshavethesamemisconceptiontoday.Rememberthequrayshwouldperformhajj,fast,sacriOiceetc.butnothingofitwasacceptedbecauseoftheirshirk.SotheOirstlessonwemustlearforourselvesandalsoteachourchildren:fa’lam:KnowthatthereisnoneworthyofworshipbutAllah.ForwehavebeencommandedtoworhsipAllahalone.Allritualscomeaftertauheed.Tauheedistheprerequisite.ButwedontgiveduetoimportancetostrengtheningandcorrectingourIman…wefocussomuchontheexternal…andAllahexaminestheinternal.TheOirstlessonthattheProphet(s)taught:OpeoplesaylaailahaillAllahandyoushallsucceed.SoweshouldalsoreOlectonthistoday,andrecognizeourLordOirstandforemost.AndtorecognizeHim,wemustknowHisNamesandAttributes.ThemoreweknowHim,themorewewillloveHim,andthemoresincereouractionswillbe…onlythenwilltheybeaccepted.

SotheAshurahadgreatsigniOicanceneartheArabs.IfwementinMuharramorthe10thofMuharramwhatcomestoourmind?themartyrdomofthePRophetsgradnsonHusayn(r).Butthisdaywasimportantevenbeforethisincident.

Historical significance of this dayThejewswouldsayaboutthisday:

• This is a good day [2004:مسلم] هذا يوم صالح• This is a great day [3397:البخاری] هذا يوم عظيم

It is the day that the Arabs would clothe the Kabah and put on its coverعن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت كانوا يصومون عاشوراء قبل أن يفرض رمضان وكان يوما تستر فيه الكعبة

[صحیح بخاری:1592]

Narrated`Aishaعنهااللهرضي,shesaid:Thepeopleusedtofaston'Ashura(10thofMuharram)beforethefastingofRamadanwasmadeobligatory.AndonthatdaytheKa`bausedtobecoveredwithacover.

NarratedAbuMusaعنہاللہرضی,hesaid:Thedayof'Ashura'wasconsideredas`IddaybytheJews.SotheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said,"Irecommendyou(Muslims)tofastonthisday.”

Women of the jews would dress up on this dayعـن أبى مـوسى رضى الـله عـنه قـال كـان أهـل خيبر يـصومـون يـوم عـاشـوراء يتخـذونـه عـيدا ويـلبسون نـساءهـم فـيه حـليهم

وشارتهم. فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فصوموه أنتم . [صحیح مسلم:2717]

AbuMusaعنہاللہرضیreported,hesaid:thatthepeopleofKhaibar(mostofthemwereJews)observedfastonthedayof'Ashuraandtheytreateditas'Idandgavetheirwomenornamentsandbeautifuldressestowear.TheMessengerofAllah(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said:You(only)observefastonthisday

Importance of fasting on 10th of Muharram “`Ashura” in Islam An important day from the Days of Allah

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إن عاشوراء يوم من أيام الله فمن شاء صامه ومن شاء تركه [صحیح مسلم:2698]

TheMessengerofAllah(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said:Indeed'AshuraisoneofthedaysofAllah,sohewhowishedshouldobservefastandhewhowishedotherwiseshouldabandonit.

AbuQatadaAnsariعنہاللہرضیreported...thattheMessengerofAllah,Muharram)of(10th'Ashuraofdaytheonfastingaboutaskedwas(صلى الله عليه وسلم)whereuponhesaid:Itexpiatesthesinsoftheprecedingyear.

Fast of gratitudeى الـله فـيه مـوسى وأغرق صلى الله عليه وسلملما قـدم الـمديـنة وجـدهـم يـصومون يومـا يـعني عـاشوراء فـقالوا هـذا يوم عـظيم وهـو يوم نـج أن الـنبي

آل فرعون فصام موسى شكرا لله فقال أنا أولى بموسى منهم فصامه وأمر بصيامه [البخاری:3397]

WhentheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)cametoMedina,hefound(theJews)fastingonthedayof'Ashura'(i.e.10thofMuharram).Theyusedtosay:"ThisisagreatdayonwhichAllahsavedMosesaanddrownedthefolkofPharaoh.Mosesaobservedthefastonthisday,asasignofgratitudetoAllah."He(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said,"IamclosertoMosesthanthey."So,heobservedthefast(onthatday)andorderedtheMuslimstofastonit.

Even children would fast on this dayذ قـالـت أرسـل الـنبي صلى الـله عـليه وسـلم غـداة عـاشوراء إلى قرى الأنـصار مـن أصـبح مـفطرا فـليتم بـقية بـيع بـنت مـعو عـن الرم صـبيانـنا ونـجعل لـهم الـلعبة مـن الـعهن فـإذا بكى أحـدهـم على يومـه ومـن أصـبح صـائمـا فـليصم قـالـت فـكنا نـصومـه بـعد ونـصو

الطعام أعطيناه ذاك حتى يكون عند الإفطار [البخاری:1960]

NarratedRubayyii'bintMu'awidh:"TheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)sentamessengertothevillageoftheAnsarinthemorningofthedayof'Ashura'(10thofMuharram)toannounce:'Whoeverhaseatensomethingshouldnoteatbutcompletethefast,andwhoeverisobservingthefastshouldcompleteit.'"Shefurthersaid,"Sincethenweusedtofastonthatdayregularlyandalsomakeourchildrenfast.Weusedtomaketoysofwoolforthemandifanyoneofthemcriedfor,hewasgiventhosetoystillitwasthetimeofthebreakingofthefast."

It is Mustahabb preferable to fast on this dayعن جابر بن سمرة رضى الله عنه قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يأمرنا بصيام يوم عاشوراء ويحثنا عليه ويتعاهدنا عنده فلما

فرض رمضان لم يأمرنا ولم ينهنا ولم يتعاهدنا عنده. [مسلم:2708]

'A'ishaعنهااللهرضيreported.Inthepre-IslamicdaysfastwasobservedonthedayofAshura,butwiththeadventofIslam,nowhewhowishedtofastfasted,andhewholikedtoabandonitabandonedit.

The Prophets intention to fast on the ninth alsoعـن عـبد الـله بـن عـباس رضى الـله عنهما يـقول حين صـام رسول الـله صلى الـله عـليه وسـلم يوم عـاشوراء وأمـر بـصيامـه قـالوا يـا ول الـله صلى الـله عـليه وسـلم فـإذا كـان الـعام الـمقبل إن شـاء الـله ه يـوم تـعظمه الـيهود والـنصارى. فـقال رسـ ول الـله إنـ رسـ

رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. [صحیح مسلم:2722] صمنا اليوم التاسع . قال فلم يأت العام المقبل حتى توفى

Ibn'AbbasعنہمااللہرضیreportedthatwhentheMessengerofAllahbeshoulditthatcommandedand'Ashuraofdaytheonfasted(صلى الله عليه وسلم)observedasafast,they(hisCompanions)saidtohim:MessengerofAllah,itisadaywhichtheJewsandChristiansholdinhighesteem.ThereupontheMessengerofAllah(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said:Whenthenextyearcomes,ifAllahwilled,wewouldobservefastonthe9th.Said:buttheMessengerofAllah(صلى الله عليه وسلم)diedbeforetheadventofthenextyear.

عـن عـبد الـله بـن عـباس رضى الـله عنهما قـال قـال رسول الـله صلى الـله عـليه وسـلم لئن بـقيت إلى قـابـل لأصومـن الـتاسـع . وفى رواية أبى بكر قال يعنى يوم عاشوراء. [صحیح مسلم:2723]

Abdullahbin'Abbasعنہمااللہرضیreported,hesaidthattheMessengerofAllah(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said:IfIlivetillthenext(year),IwoulddeOinitelyobservefastonthe9th,andinthenarrationtransmittedbyAbuBakris(Ibn`Abbas)said:"Hemeantthedayof`Ashura`.”

- Sowhatwelearnfromtheseahadithistheimportanceoffastingonthisday

- ThereasonwhyImamBukharimentionsthishereistotelluswhattheArabsusedtodobeforetheProphet(s).Inordertotruly

understandtheProphet(s)’smissionandmessageitsnecessarytounderstandthecontext/thesituationatthetime

ثنا ابن طاوس عن أبيه عن ابن عباس رضي الله ثنا وهيب حد ثنا مسلم حد 3832 - حدون عنهما قال كانوا يرون أن العمرة في أشهر الحج من الفجور في الأرض وكانوا يسمبر وعفا الأثر حلت العمرة لمن اعتمر قال فقدم المحرم صفرا ويقولون إذا برا الد

رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه رابعة مهلين بالحج وأمرهم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يجعلوها عمرة قالوا يا رسول الله أي الحل قال الحل كله

NarratedIbn`Abbas:Thepeopleusedtoconsidertheperformanceof`UmrainthemonthsofHajjanevildeedontheearth,

- THeyconsidereditasin- Theyhadaconceptofsinandwrong.Theconceptofdisobedienceexistedatthetime

- WhatarethemonthsofHajj?Thewellknownmonths:Shawwal,DHulQa’dahDhulHijjah-meaningifinthesemonthsapersonleaveshishouse,travelstoMakkah,putsonhisihramthenhishajjisvalid.Butifapersongoesinramadanwiththeihramforhajjthenhishajjwillnotbevlid.

- WhentheArabsputonIhramforHajjtheywouldonlydohajj,notumrah.ButtheProphet(s)abolishedthispractie-andallowedumrahandhajjtobeperformedinoneIhram-thisiscalledHajjtamattu’:ThisisvaliduntilthedayofJudgement.andtheyusedtocallthemonthofMuharramasSafar

- MeaningtheychangedMuharramwithSafar:swapped.- HajjcanonlybedoneinHajj,notinanyothermonth.ButtheArabswouldchangethemonthsaroundfortheirconvenience,andthiswascalled‘Nasee’-butAllahforbadethis.FromthetimethatAllahcreatedtheskiesandtheearth,Hedividedtheyearinto12months,and4aresacred.Andwearenotallowedtochangethemforourconvenience.ForHajjdaysareOixed.

- TheywereobsessedwithOightingandforthemtorefrainfromOightingforsolongwasveryhard…thisiswhytheychangedthemonthsaround.BEcauseOighitngwasforbiddeninMuharram.

andusedtosay,"When(thewoundsover)thebacks(ofthecamels)havehealed

- Camelswouldgetwoundedintheirbackbecauseofthelongjourneys.SouponreturnfromHajj,itwouldtakesometimeforthecamelstorecover.andthefoot-marks(ofthecamels)havevanished

- -Anotherwaythisparthasbeenreadis‘wabar’-meaningthehairofthecamelhavereturned,asintheyhavegrownbacjk.Becausethepartwherethesaddlewouldbe,thehairofthecamelwouldfall(aftercomingfromHajj),then`Umrabecomeslegalfortheonewhowantstoperform`Umra."

- Inotherwords,theyconsideredumrahtobelegalonlyafterHajjAllah'sMessenger(صلى الله عليه وسلم)andhiscompanionsreachedMeccaassumingIhramforHajjonthefourthofDhul-Hijja.

- Muhilleena:hallala:todeclareloudly,meaningpronouncetalbiyahinIhramTheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)orderedhiscompanionstoperform`Umra(withthatlhraminsteadofHajj).Theyasked,"OAllah'sApostle!WhatkindofOinishingofIhram?"

- -Meaning,willonlypartsoftherestrictionsofIhramberemovedafterweperformUmrahoralltherestrictions?

- TheyaskedthisbecausetherearetwolevelsoftherestrictionsofIhram.WhenyoutakeofftheIhramyoucancutyourhair,nails,etc.butafterperformingthetawafofhajj,etc.thenonehavemaritalrelations.TheProphet(صلى الله عليه وسلم)said,"FinishtheIhramcompletely.’

- -sohe(s)toldthemtheIhramisoffcompletely,meaningtheycouldhavemaritalrelationsalso.AndwhenthetimeofHajjwillcome,onthedayofTarwiyah,the8th-theywouldputonIhramagainforHajj.

- SotheArabschangedthereligionofAllahinmanyways:theydeclaredhalalwhatevertheywishedanddeclaredharamwhatevertheywished-animals,rituals,food,etc.SotheProphet(s)corrected/reformedthereligion.

Modification in the months is unlawful It is Kufr

ة مـا حرم • ـا النسيء زيـادة في الـكفر يـضل بـه الـذيـن كـفروا يحـلونـه عـامـا ويحرمونـه عـامـا لـيواطـئوا عـد إنمالله فيحلوا ما حرم الله زين لهم سوء أعمالهم والله لا يهدي القوم الكافرين (التوبة:37)

Indeed,thepostponing[ofrestrictionwithinsacredmonths]isanincreaseindisbeliefbywhichthosewhohavedisbelievedareled[further]astray.TheymakeitlawfuloneyearandunlawfulanotheryeartocorrespondtothenumbermadeunlawfulbyAllahand[thus]makelawfulwhatAllahhasmadeunlawful.Madepleasingtothemistheeviloftheirdeeds;andAllahdoesnotguidethedisbelievingpeople.

For convenience they would swap the monthsفـكانـوا يـسمون المحرم صـفرا ويحـلونـه ويـؤخـرون تحـريـم المحرم إلى نـفس صـفر لـئلا يـتوالى عـليهم ثـلاثـة أشهـر •

رمـة فـيضيق عـليهم فـيها مـا اعـتادوه مـن المـقاتـلة والـغارة والنهـب فـضللهم الـله في ذلـك فـقال إنمـا النسيء محـزيادة في الكفر يضل به الذين كفروا (التوبة:3773/)

Sotheychangedthenameofthe‘Muharram’to‘Saffar’andmadeitlawfulandhencetheyusedtodelaythesacrednessoftheMuharramtill(themonthof)Saffarsothattheyarenotinastateofsacrilityforthreemonthsinarow.Inthismannertheywereabletocontinuetheirwarfare,murderousactsanddebaucherywithoutanyrestrictions(ofthesacredmonths),towhichtheywereaddictedto.SoAllahdeclaredthemasmisguidedandsaid:“Indeed,thepostponing[ofrestrictionwithinsacredmonths]isanincreaseindisbeliefbywhichthosewhohavedisbelieved.

وقـال الزمخشري النسيء هـو تـأخير حرمـة الشهـر إلى شهـر آخـر وربمـا زادوا في عـدد الشهـر فـيجعلونـها ثـلاثـة عشر •أو أربعة عشر ليتسع لهم الوقت

AndZamakhsharisaidthatالنسيءmeantpostponingthesacredmonthtowardstheothermonthandsometimestheywouldincreasethenumberofmonthsandmakethemasthirteenorfourteenmonthssothattheywouldgetampletime.

كـانـوا يـسمون المحرم صـفرا ويحـلونـه وينسـئون المحرم ، أى يـؤخـرونـه بـعد صـفرة لـئلا يـتوالى عـليهم ثـلاثـة اشهـر •حرم تضيق بها الأمور عليهم ، فرد الله تعالى ذلك عليهم .

TheywouldnameMuharramasSaffarandmakeitlawfulandwouldpostponeMuharram-meaning,theywouldpostponeituntilafterSaffarsothatthethreesacredmonthswouldnotcomeconsecutively-asthatwouldcausethemproblems

وقولـه (ويـقولون إذا برأ الـدبـر وعـفا الأثـر وانسـلخ صـفر حـلت الـعمرة لمـن اعـتمر) قـال الإمـام (برأ الـدبـر) يـريـدون •دبر ظهر الإبل عند انصرافها من الحج كانت تدبر بالسير عليها إلى الحج

The meaning of (برأ الدبر) Andhissaying:(WhenthewoundofthebackhealsanditsmarkdisappearsandtheSaffarhaspassedthen`Umrahbecomeslawfulforthepilgrimsofthe`Umrah.)TheImamsaid:(الدبربرأ)Heusedtomeanthewoundofthecamel’sbackwhentheyreturnedfromtheHajj.WhentheyperformedHajjbyridingonthemtheywouldgetwounded.

(وعفا الاثر) أى درس وامحى والمراد أثر الابل وغيرها في سيرها عفا أثرها لطول مرور الايام •

The meaning of (عفا الاثر) marksthethatmeantitanddisappearedwoundtheMeans(عفاالاثر)disappearedwhichappearedonthecamelsandotheranimalsduringtravelling.

ويـكون عـفا -أيـضا -بمـعنى كثر وهـو مـن الأضـداد -أيـضا- قـال الـله تـعالى {حتـى عـفوا} أى كثروا ويروى (عـفا الـوبـر) • .

Andthemeaningofعفاistobecomemore.Thewordعفاisamongtheantonyms.AllahTa’alasaid:{عفواحتى}Untiltheyprosperedmeansincreasedand(الوبرعفا)(hairofwoolfalloff)isalsonarrated.

- ThereareOixedtimesforeverything.Andifwedelaythemfromtheirpropertimethenwehavemissedout….theclasstimeisfrom9.45to11-ifwecome15minuteslatewehavemissedout…inotherworkalso,ifweareworkingsomewhere,canwesaythingslikeIcantcomeduringthedaytotheofOice,I’llcomeinthenightandsitonmychair….whatwilltheysay?pleasedonotcome…Allahhastakenanoathbytime….soifwearelate…weareinkhusr:loss.

- Whenmakingupmissedfasts:youhavetohavetheintentionbeforeyoubeginthefast.

حديث:174

ثنا سعيد بن ثنا سفيان قال كان عمرو يقول حد ثنا علي بن عبد الله حد 3833 - حده قال جاء سيل في الجاهلية فكسا ما بين الجبلين قال سفيان المسيب عن أبيه عن جد

ويقول إن هذا لحديث له شأن NarratedSa`idbinAl-Musaiyab'sgrand-father:Inthepre-lslamicperiodofignoranceaOloodofraincameandOilledthevalleyinbetweenthetwomountains(aroundtheKa`ba).

- Whatisthatbackground?قوله جاء سيل في الجاهلية فطبق ما بين الجبلين أي ملأ ما بين الجبلين اللذين في جانبي الكعبة [فتح الباری] •

Coming of the Flood- Duringthepre-Islamicera,aOloodcameanditOilledtheareabetweenthetwomountains,meaningthatthemiddleareabetweenthetwomountainsacrosstheKa`bawasOlooded(withwater).

قـال سـفيان ويـقول ان هـذا الحـديـث لـه شأن أي قـصة وذكـر مـوسى بـن عـقبة ان السـيل كـان يأتي مـن فوق الردم •الذي بأعلى مكة فيجريه فتخوفوا ان يدخل الماء الكعبة فأرادوا تشييد بنيانها [فتح الباری]

Re-Construction of the Ka’aba due to flooding- Sufyansaid:”Andheusedtosay(meaningfromwhomSufyannarrated)thatthereisahistoryofthisHadithwhichisnarratedbyMusabin`Uqbah,thatthewaterusedtorushinfromovertheouterwalloftheMakkah.So(thepeopleof)MakkahgotthreatenedbythefactthatthiswatermightentertheKa`basotheyintentedtofortifyitsconstruction.

- Thisisthereasonwhyhousesarealsobuiltsuchthatyouhavetogoupasteportwosothatrainwateretc.doesnotenterthehouse.

- YoumayhavewonderedwhythedooroftheKa’bahissohigh…thisiswhy…

- Anotherreasonisgiven….Kabal-ahbarsaidtoAbdullahb.ZubayrthatbuildtheKabahwerestronglyandOirmlybecausewehavebeeninformedthatmanyOloodswillcomeneartheHour.
