A full retrospective of Luis Bunuel's films, from Un Chien Andalou all the way to Cet obscur objet du desir, is an event. In this time and age, when films are supposed to be user-friendly, that is never generate any fear, worries, concern or unnecessary reflection, that cannot be immediately wiped out once you're out of the cinema, when computer screens have replaced the cinemas and soon enough the portable phones will replace the computers, when everybody has everything, or at least everything his heart could wish, either on a disk at home or on the disk of one's portable computer, to be seen when there is nothing better to do between midnight and six o'clock in the morning, in this time and age, seeing again Bunuel's films on a big screen is an occasion not to miss. Go and see it all, without exception, ignore the opinion makers if they tell you the Mexican pictures are too conventional and the French ones too polished and that surrealism is no longer in fashion, we're too clever for that. Go and watch the subversive messages he sneaks into apparently banal melodramas like Susana or the sarcastic morality of The Life of Archibaldo Cruz, go and enjoy the output of a filmmaker who believed you're supposed to think about what you see and read between the lines, not just swallow the film whole and drown it in half a gallon of Coca Cola. >>Just in case you need some guidance to find your way into his films, we have selected a few pieces that might help. Igal Bursztyn draws for us a profile of Bunuel's work. we translated a spectacularly documented piece the late Tomas Perez Turrent wrote more than 20 years ago for THE MEXICAN CINEMA, a book published by the British Film Institute and Mexico's IMCINE. Danny Muggia writes about Bunuel's last film. Jay Weissberg displays Bunuel's consistent faith in the absurdist incongruity of his messages from his early days to his retirement. The influence of the great Spanish writer Perez Galdos on Bunuel's work is highlighted by Luis Roca Arencibia who co-directed a film on this topic. Jonathan Schreiber looks at the way Bunuel treated one of his favorite subjects, women, and finally, to throw additional light on his life and his approach to the foibles of man and his inherent obsessions, to eroticism and to the bourgeoisie, to Faith and the Catholic Church which he ridiculed with a passion, we have a collection of illuminating quotes, by Bunuel and by many of his friends and acquaintances, that sum up his joyously blasphemous take on the human nature. And if it so happens that the same details affected different people in different ways, please keep in mind the truth is in the eye of the beholder and no one would agree to that more than Luis Bunuel himself.
