FOREWORD

Thirty-three years have passed since AerLingus commenced operations with the flightof the tiny five-seater biplane "lolar" fromBaldonnel, Dublin to Bristol, England. We areproud of the fact that from that unpretentiousbeginning we have grown in stature and arenow an airline of international repute opera-ting the latest jet aircraft and carrying wellover a million passengers per annum to thirty-one destinations in twelve countries.

What I consider to be one of our happiestcontributions in Ireland is not immediatelyapparent in the accountant's ledger. Ourfive Young Scientists' Exhibitions have, I feel,in some measure stimulated the minds of ourstudents and demonstrated to them and toother members of our community the inherentscientific and technological capabilities ofour people. The Exhibitions have also servedto emphasise to the thousands of school-children who have participated in or visitedthem, the importance and relevance of scienti-fic studies in a modern Ireland.

This Young Scientists' Exhibition, which isthe sixth in the series, features some in-novations. We have increased the prize moneyavailable by £300 to give a total of £1,450. Forthe first time the Exhibition will remain openon a Saturday and a Sunday to allow the pub-lic better opportunities of viewing the exhibi-tors' work. Also, a new category, Sociology, has been introduced and should present avaried and interesting selection of projects.I wish to say a special word of thanks to ourjudges. For many of them this will be the sixthsuccessive occasion on which they have beenasked to discharge an onerous and time con-suming task. To all members of this dis-tinguished panel we express our gratitudefor their help so readily given as well as ourappreciation of the honour they do us inconsenting to act in this capacity.

I thank also the exhibitors themselves for theirparticipation. We trust that they and theirteachers will feel the effort was worthwhile

General Manager.

An Prlomhbhainisteoir.
