This past weekend, I attended the Cal-Nev-Ha KIWIN'S 40th District Convention. Every time I attend their district convention, I always come back re-energized and re-committed to this organization and our family called Kiwanis. During the convention there are always moments where I am inspired by our youth's maturity, dedication, and perspective of the world and the future. One of the moments that really moved me and opened my eyes, was the Oratorical speech. The winner of the oratorical contest was from our sponsoring SLP, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S. The full speech is on Page 10, but I would like to share a brief part with you here. "

Jean Hsu opened with a story written by Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. So in this huge forest far, far away, there lived a myriad of happy animals. One day, unfortunately, there was a huge fire, and all of the animals fled from the forest. Desperately, for hours, they watched the overwhelming fire destroy their homes as they stared on in shock. Eventually the animals ask, “What do you think you can do, you’re too little!” and they laugh and wait for the hummingbird to give up. But… instead… the hummingbird tells them, “I am doing the best I can, and that… is what everyone should do.” !

Jean's story really moved me because that's what Kiwanis is all about, each one of us probably don't have the time to devote 40 hours of community service a week or have the income to donate millions to a charity, but each one of us is doing everything we can and together we ARE improving the world and making an impact. Greg Preston"!!!Story by David Malkin"!This week’s speaker was Greg Preston, and his assistants Grace and David This, from the citizens’ Climate Lobby. Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists are convinced, based on the evidence, that human-caused global warming is happening."!Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a group that lobbies in support of “Carbon Fee and Dividend’s” impact that will, within 20 years, reduce greenhouse gas emissions 52% below 1990 levels while growing the economy and saving lives. Carbon Fee and Dividend is the climate change solution created by Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) to account for the costs of burning fossil fuels. Climate scientists and economists alike say our solution is the best first step to reducing the likelihood of catastrophic climate change from global warming."!Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers pride themselves in being FOR something rather than AGAINST things. So Carbon Fee and Dividend is the policy citizen volunteers around the world are advocating FOR. They also write letters to the editor and op-eds, and meet with editorial boards to gain editorial endorsements. This evening they were asking for our help in "

communicating with Congressman Ed Royce to gain his support. They facilitate presentations and tables at events to promote CCL and introduce others to their Carbon Fee and Dividend proposal."!They also support volunteer chapters and their leaders with monthly conference calls. Donation to Citizens’ Climate Education train ordinary citizens to promote fair, effective, and non-partisan climate change solutions.Citizens’ Climate Lobby"!

SYLVIA PADDILA FRIENDS OF THE HEART !

Story by David Malkin"Our speaker this week was no stranger to our Kiwanis Club. Sylvia Paddila, founder and CEO of Friends of the Heart, and a former Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club member." "Friends of the Heart is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization developed in 2001. After recognizing the hardship on children when being placed into foster homes, Sylvia Padilla developed a program to make sure that children entering a foster home will receive a new duffel bag filled with age-appropriate gifts. Children are often taken from their homes under traumatic situations allowing them no time to gather personal belongings. If time is allowed, a trash bag is given to the child to place their belongings into."!The "Duffel Bags For Kids Program" has proven to be a beneficial aspect with the transition of the child who is entering into a new foster home. The gift of the duffel bag allows the child to feel special and gives them a much-needed sense of confidence."!Children are often removed from their homes due to extreme abuse, neglect, or a parent who has a substance abuse problem. This time in a child's life is very difficult and extremely painful. Friends of the Heart is trying to make a difference in the children's lives by showing them that they are cared for and loved."!Testimonials reflect the difference in a child when they receive the gift of a new blue duffel bag. Even though their happiness may be temporary, the memory of being cared for will last forever. Each bag is

THE KIWANISCOPECal-Nev-Ha KIWIN'S 40th District Convention!

By Jade Wong - Immediate Past KIWIN'S District Governor !!Being in KIWIN'S for the past 4 years has offered me countless opportunities that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Besides being able to serve my school and community, I was able to have many experiences that are unique to the KIWIN'S organization--District Convention being one of the most outstanding. "!When I was a freshman I had the opportunity to attend my first KIWIN'S District Convention and meet students from all over California. The three days and two nights spent there surrounded by some of the most spirited and inspirational people truly brought out a different side in me. This was the first time I was exposed to how large the organization was and how young students could actually have an impact on the world. I was inspired by the grace and confidence of the District Governor at the time, Kennedy Roberts, to not only want

to build the community, "but also to build myself as a person and leader. My first convention was the catalyst that pushed me to get over my fear of public speaking, cheering, and socializing with strangers. Instead of looking at meeting new people as a chore, I saw it was a unique opportunity to gain a new perspective and learn something new. "!Each District Convention marked a new turning point for me. My second convention pushed me to run for positions I didn't think I would get but more importantly inspired me to get back up when I didn't get them. "!My third and final conventions are the final turning points that solidified my life goals to forever live a life of giving back. My third convention, I ran for District Governor but did not take it lightly at all. I wanted to able to pay forward everything the organization had given me. It was really the beginning to what I hoped was a term focused on the members and building back the name of KIWIN'S. "!Coming around full circle this year, I was able to experience convention with a completely different perspective. This was the 40th anniversary of the founding of the organization and I wanted it to be outstanding for both members and advisors. Sponsoring Kiwanis clubs and SLP clubs had put countless hours into fundraising, organizing, and promoting for them to attend this event. Seeing all the work that had been completed throughout the entire year assured me that we would have a successful convention, but I wasn't sure what kinds of problems we would have along the way. I was definitely worried, but after much reflection, I realized that running the convention alongside the District Board brought a newfound understanding of the organization, our members, and especially me. Seeing the members have so much fun made me have fun. Seeing the members and officers' eyes light up with joy after winning an award made me cheer a little louder. Seeing the efforts of countless hours put in by students and advisors come to fruition made me glow with pride to serve this district. "!Having planned this convention with the board for the entire year undoubtedly made it more emotional, but also more meaningful. Though I won't be able to attend any future conventions as a member, I know that I will always look on my convention experiences fondly. Thank you to Kiwanis who made these all a possibility.

THE KIWANISCOPE

By Jean Hsu, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN'S"!I’d like to start with a story. A story written by Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s called “I will be a Hummingbird.” So in this huge forest far, far away, there lived a myriad of happy animals. One day, unfortunately, there was a huge fire, and all of the animals flee from the forest. Desperately, for hours, they watch the overwhelming fire destroy their homes as they stared on in shock. However, there was a small hummingbird who finally said…“I’m going to do something about the fire.” And it flies to the nearest stream and takes a drop of water, races back and

drops the tiny drop on the fire. The hummingbird flies as fast as it can, back and forth, back and forth, while the other animals stand and watch in bewilderment. Eventually the animals ask, “What do you think you can do, you’re too little!” and they laugh and wait for the hummingbird to give up. But… instead… the hummingbird tells them, “I am doing the best I can, and that… is what everyone should do.” "This hummingbird… is every, single, person here at this convention. Just like the hummingbird, we may sometimes feel insignificant or that our efforts are useless, but we always try our very best to serve our community and make our world a better place. And that is a value that KIWINS has so carefully instilled in us from the very beginning. "But… what about the rest of the animals? Just standing there, watching their home, the place they love, fall apart. Think about the elephant, who could have brought so much water to the fire. All of us here at this convention have been privileged enough to be a part of this community service organization that has fostered our love and understanding of the power of service, but there are so many others out there who have not been able to witness the power of community and the power of family and the power of empathy."!(Continue on Page 11)

And that is why membership growth is so important for Key Club International. There is no doubt that KIWIN’S and Key Club was founded the basis of inclusivity and community and we have all experienced first hand, how much impact Key Club and KIWIN’S can have on our development. High school is such a prime time for us: it is where we learn our values and what is truly important to us. This space single handedly serves as a place for all of us to grow intellectually and emotionally, from learning to

organize events to public speaking to interacting with so many diverse and incredible people."!But more importantly, think of all the potential that lies in the hearts of so many people out"there. Human capital has always been the key to social change and innovation, and for us, it’s"simple - the more members we have equals the more change we can make in this world. Think"of all the things that could be changed if every single student had a burning desire in their heart to serve the people around them and the support they needed to do so."!All of us in this room, we’re going to become the adults of this world in a few years. In roughly 10 years, this planet will be left in our hands and we will get to decide what to do with it. Whether it goes down in flames or it changes for the better, it’s up to us. You know that girl right there, yeah she’s going to cure cancer. And that boy right there, yup! Hes gonna design the newest technology to reduce air pollution. And that other girl, shes going to devote the rest of her life to helping the homeless. You see, the possibilities are endless."!When we make the active decision to attract more students into this wonderful community, we are making the commitment not just to the club, but to the world. Key club and KIWINS is"where we train and grow a family of changemakers who will set out into the world to think"globally and act locally."!And so, it is only appropriate to close with one of the most powerful quotes on the Berlin Wall. It says, “many small people who in many small places do many small things that can alter the face of the world.”

THE KIWANISCOPECal-Nev-Ha Key Club 2016 District Convention

By: Emily Chen"2016-2017 Lieutenant Governor Division 35 East"!Key Club District Convention 2017 was definitely one for the books. Though it was my first time attending,, I thoroughly enjoyed the energy, cherished moments made with new and current friends, and celebration of the achievements we have

all made in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District. I was able to cheer on the Immediate-Past Lieutenant Governor Sabrina Bodine and my lovely friends from multiple Divisions as they stepped on stage to receive their awards. I was able to cheer alongside my Division during spirit battles before the general sessions. I was able to meet, befriend, and create life-long friendships with the 2016-2017 Lieutenant Governors whom I have come to identify and love as a new branch of my Ohana. However, District Convention doesn’t just carry the social aspect of Key Club. During DCON, I was able to learn so many new things and gain more knowledge related to the Division I serve and the duties that my position requires. And honestly, if I could describe DCON 2017 in one word, it would definitely be ‘Insightful’. Going to DCON this

By Joshua Tong"Division 35 West"!This year was the first time I've experienced DCON, and I loved it. This is an unforgettable experience that I'll never forget. Being chosen as a delegate to vote for our new district board was also lots of fun! Hearing their speeches during caucuses helped me discover new ways to present and be confident in speeches. And above all, the spirit there was unbelievable. When it came to cheering, no one shied away and cheered their hearts out. The spirit competitiveness is definitely an experience you don't want to miss! Using this experience, I'll be sure to go all out in future years.
