The Quest
The notion of The Quest is evident in many aspects of our lives; in the films we watch, in the books we
read, in the television programs we enjoy and in the advertising we see. Joseph Campbell discovered
common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world and he called this
common structure ‘The Monomyth’, which can be applied to almost all Quest genre stories. In this focus
study, you will learn about and identify the key elements of the Quest story and its character archetypes.

Part B: Film Study (20 marks) Due: Wednesday 3rd May
We will study a film during class that fits into the Quest genre and will identify each of the key story elements and
character archetypes as we watch the film.
Your job is to work in pairs to create an illustrative video to help your viewers understand WHY the film is part of
the Quest genre. The audience of your video consists of people who have not seen the film, so you must be
descriptive and use examples from the film to support your response. We will look at examples and discuss ideas
during class.
Extension: If you would like to challenge yourself you may choose your own film to review. You must have
approval from me before choosing this option.
You must include the following information in your video:
1. Briefly explain who Joseph Campbell is and why he is famous
2. Introduce the film and give details of the title, director and production year
3. Explain the purpose or reason for the quest in the film and identify each story element
4. Identify and explain who the key archetypal characters are
5. Identify and explain which type of hero the protagonist is
The way in which you choose to represent the information is up to you. For example:
• Documentary with commentary
• Interview with the director
• YouTube-style
• Lecture with slides and commentary
• Anything that interests you!
You will also submit a written summary of the information expressed within your video. There will be a digital
template posted to Google Classroom for you to fill in.
