OCTOBER, 2015 1 Fall may be my favorite time of the year. The temperature drops at night, leading to crisp mornings when I'm walking the dogs. The afternoons are still warm enough to wear short sleeves, or shorts with a sweatshirt. The leaves turn beauti- ful shades of yellow, orange and red. Football season starts, baseball holds the playoffs (Let's Go Bucs), and you can still participate in outdoor activities like biking, golf and hiking. Hockey and basketball are just around the corner. Fall is also when many recent law school graduates start to practice law. Because I work at a larger firm, I am able to vicariously experience the excitement of being a "new associate" every Fall. It is refreshing to work with attorneys who are just starting their careers. They approach legal issues with enthusiasm and curiosity. They view the legal practice as an esteemed and noble pursuit. Some afternoon this October, the recent graduates will be notified of their bar exam results. Perhaps, we could all use that time to reflect on how our lives have changed since we received the same news, and whether we are fulfilling the dreams and ideals that influenced us to go to law school. Are we giving back to the community in the way that we envi- sioned? Are we contributing positively or negatively to the public's perception of lawyers? Hopefully, each of can be as enthusiastic about the profession as the new lawyers that we will welcome into the DCBA this Fall. PRO BONO MONTH

On October 26, 2015, ABA President Paulette Brown will kick off National Pro Bono Week by participating in pro bono events. Throughout the week, the ABA will highlight the valuable pro bono contributions made by lawyers across the country. Dauphin County Bar Association members are so committed to pro bono service that a week is just not enough! Therefore, here in Dauphin County, we celebrate Pro Bono Month! Our Pro Bono Month starts on September 30 with the festive Fall Membership Luncheon to welcome new members at the Civil War Museum. You may have noticed colorful Pro Bono Month Table Tents at the Luncheon. At the luncheon, President Judge Richard A. Lewis also reminded the membership that participating in pro bono service is part of what it means to be a “Dauphin County lawyer”. During the month of October, the colorful Table Tents will be a fixture at Bar Association events. Most importantly, the Table Tents will again be prominently displayed at the Dauphin County Courthouse as a visible reminder of our Judges’ generous support of YOUR pro bono work. We hope the Pro Bono Table Tents and Judge Lewis’s comments will help encourage all Dauphin County attorneys to participate in pro bono before year-end. And, as an added incentive, any attorney who participated in any pro bono efforts in 2014 or 2015 is invited to attend the one-hour CLE on October 27 at Noon for no charge. (see attached Lunch & Learn information). In addition, all pro bono attorneys are listed in the well-read Pro Bono Honor Roll and invited to the well-attended Annual Judges Reception. And, it is not too late! If you have not done any pro bono work in the last two years – or if you are just not sure, contact Sandy Ballard at 232-7536 ext 7 or [email protected] to learn more. There are numerous ways to participate, including making a donation of $300 to MidPenn Legal Services. Have YOU done your pro bono this year? Sandy Ballard, DCBA Pro Bono Coordinator
