Molly and Kaleb stay calm under pressure

Continued from page 1They were two of four young Marlburians

who competed at the event which saw over 500 of the most up-and-coming paramedics competing in first aid tests, drill tests, com-munications with caregivers as well as in individuals and as a pair.

Molly is team leader while Kaleb is the lead first aider in the intermediate grade.

Molly and Kaleb had been practicing various scenarios twice a week leading up to the event and it helped them go one step further than their second place effort at the regionals.

The duo will now go to a national selection camp to pick the best.

Team manager Jane Donald says they both remain calm and focussed under pressure and communicate well.

“I feel more confident going into national

selections in two weeks,” Kaleb says. Both say their parents had an influence on

them joining St John.Molly says she wants to continue on to a

health career while Kaleb would like to study medicine at Otago University.

“I’d really like to be a paediatrician,” Kaleb says.

“Mum and Dad both did St John and they thought it would be good for me to do it as well, so I have been doing it since 2012,” Kaleb says.

“I started about 2008,” Molly says. “I’ve always been interested in medical care and I’d like to continue studying health.”

Kaleb says fellow teammates Joe Slape, 12, Chloe Speck, 13 and Laurie Duncan who all competed in Ashburton, have been tremen-dously helpful as well.

A warm welcome for godwitsChurch bells will mark the

return of the bar-tailed godwit to Marlborough this year, after an epic journey from Alaska to the Wairau Lagoons.

Will and Rose Parsons from Driftwood Retreat and Eco-Tours get excited about the 12,000km migration every year, and decided it was time to make some noise about it.

“It’s an incredible feat of endur-ance, and this is a nice way to let more people know something significant is happening,” he said.

They contacted The Church of the Nativity, and asked whether they would ring the church bells when the godwits were first spotted.

Christchurch had welcomed

the godwits this way for several years, ringing church bells for half an hour to mark the birds’ return, he said.

The event could happen in Blenheim any day now, because the godwits may already have landed, but not been spotted due to heavy river flows.

“If they’re not here already it will be very soon. And as soon as we can see them, we’ll have them ring the bells.”

Vicar Bob Barnes of The Church of the Nativity said he was delighted with the idea, because “celebrating creation” fit perfectly with the mission of the Anglican Church.

He said it wouldn’t be a toll for every bird, “but I’ll give it a darn good donging.”

The bar-tailed godwit will fly 12,000km to get to its summer residence of the Wairau Lagoons.

By Jacob PageThe first year of the St John

charity shop had been “a huge success” according to St John Ambulance Marlborough area committee chairman Rod Hill.

The charity shop in Boyce Street, Springlands not only has thousands of donated items but those items have turned into pre-cious dollars St John has used to fund important purchases that are being used in the Marlborough community.

Rod says the money generated has helped purchase life packs which include a defibrillator that takes a person’s pulse and temperature.

Each pack costs $22,000.“We have many people who

come in here regularly to drop off items and end up spending money buying other things so it’s

a full circle.“I’ve come in and I’ve had to

buy a book.”Rod says he is driven to fund

new ambulances for the province at a cost of around $200,000 each.

Shop manager Marlene Weath-erall says the shop has more than 30 volunteers who all work at certain times of the week,

“Everyone is a team,” she says. “We have Monday girls and

Friday girls and everyone really enjoys it.”

Marlene says while “big ticket” items like couches were always nice to sell there was still plenty of demand for bric-a-brac items like plates, saucers and cups.

“Chances are if you have a look around you’ll find what you’re looking for here,” she says.

Marlene says they also have generous support from the com-munity and work with other charitable shops.

“Even if we can’t sell something we will give it to The Blue Door or the Sallies and we’ll recommend people go there if they are looking for something that we don’t have and they do the same for us.”

Rod says the Springlands loca-tion has worked well and they were looking forward to many more years serving Marlborough.

The hard working Friday team at the St John Charity Shop celebrate one year in business.

By Jacob PageThe sacrifice and commitment

of Marlborough Police has been acknowledged on Police Remem-brance Day.

A ceremony was held yesterday at the Clubs of Marlborough to remember officers who died on duty as well as long serving members of the Marlborough Police.

Marlborough area commander inspector Simon Feltham says it was one of the most important days on the police calendar.

“Today, we remember the 29 men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in discharging their oath of office, we pay respect to their families, we pay respect to past police officers and the returned service men and women and serving members of the armed forces and our service

police officers who continue to put themselves in harm’s way.”

Simon says police must remain vigilant to the risks that go with their job.

He also stated his officers must continue to earn the respect of the public they serve with their hard

work each day.He says while acknowledgement

of public service may seem old fash-ioned it was important it continued to be recognised and appreciated.

He says he welcomed the in-creased scrutiny of his team.

“I see this added scrutiny as a sign

that the public still see us as relevant and important members of their community.”

Six Marlborough police officers received long service awards during the ceremony.

There were also two diplomas in workplace practices.

Just Arrived

By Jacob PageNew Zealand Winegrowers

has announced the names of nine successful sommeliers who will participate in the in-augural Sommit Scholarship, held in New Zealand, including Marlborough, from January 30 to February 6 next year.

The successful candidates will engage with and learn from some of the great minds in the New Zealand wine business.

They will taste a range of pre-mium wines from New Zealand and the rest of the world on an intensive seven-day programme incorporating flagship events on the New Zealand wine industry’s national calendar.

The first event in the scholar-ship programme is the Som-melier Summit, hosted by local sommeliers Cameron Douglas MS and Stephen Wong, says Catherine Wansink, Market

Manager Australia at New Zea-land Winegrowers.

“Cameron and Stephen will be presenting their own ‘hidden gems’ of New Zealand wine and will lead discussions on growing trends such as natural wines and organic and biodynamic production.”

The successful sommeliers will also attend the International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration in Marlborough, the Chardonnay

and Sparkling Wine Symposium in Gisborne, and the Forage event in North Canterbury.

“This is a great opportunity for Australia’s emerging and top sommeliers to immerse themselves in the New Zealand wine industry and gain a greater understanding of the diverse range of premium wines we produce” says Ms Wansink.

“It will be an unforgettable experience.”

Marlborough a stop for wine scholars

Ma rlb o roug h Pol ic e , along with members of the Marlborough Coastguard, paid tribute to one of Mar-lborough’s local heroes at a ceremony on Arapawa Island on Friday.

Joe Heberley has been the ‘go to man’ for Police search and rescue when boaties get into trouble in the Marlbrough Sounds and Cook Strait for decades.

Joe, along with his sons and with his late father can be credited with saving the lives of countless people who have got themselves into difficulty on the water.

At the surprise presentation ceremony at the Heberley farm on the island, Marlborough Police Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham presented Joe with a District Commander’s Commendation and a plaque in appreciation from Marlborough Police.

Simon says Joe had probably done more than any other person in Marlborough to support the community and

serve others.“Police are enormously

reliant on people in the com-munity to help us out and provide expertise and local knowledge of the area when we are involved in a rescue.

“Joe’s expertise has been in-valuable and numerous people wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t

for his expertise and efforts. His selfless commitment to

service has saved countless lives and contributed to the rescue of numerous vessels and people in distress,” he said.

Joe says as fishermen living in a remote environment “you don’t hesitate” to go to the aid

of others.“We might all be in that posi-

tion one day and hoping that someone will come,” he said.

Coastguard Marlborough President Dick Chapman also presented Joe with an honor-ary life membership and a plaque in appreciation of his service.

The

Sun Business Update

“Food is something people create from the heart, a passion to share with others. This, delivered with a standard of service that makes people smile is what we strive for everyday.”

These are the words of Railway Cafe and Store manager Charles Guillon, who on behalf of the owners is excited to announce new additions to the already popular business.

“We have exceptional food and service that makes people feel welcome so they not only enjoy their experience, but want to come back for more.

“This is something we are extremely proud of and we want to tell everyone about it. Come on in and try it for yourself,” Charles says.

The cafe opened prior to Christmas last year and has been a hot spot for many locals who enjoy the range of handcrafted pies, rolls, sandwiches, cakes and muffins and in particular, the coffee.

But just when customers thought they had tasted their favourites, Charles and his team have now introduced an even more tempting selection of french inspired pastries.

Authentic delicacies such as the Croque Monsieur have already gained a lot of attention, as will the french baked breads that provide a teaser for the new menu which launches this week.

“Our food is from the heart... it can’t get more personal than that,” Charles smiles.

As exciting as the new menu has been for Charles and his team, the best news has been left for today to announce.

“We are roasting our own coffee!”“This is something I have been waiting to do and

I am so excited to introduce this,” he says.

Dear Ed,What myopic attitude staff and some

councillors have to the need for a by-pass to the east of Blenheim to allow trucks and ferry traffic to get on the highway south.

On a recent North Island trip I noticed towns with bypasses.

Taupo’s by-pass is a massive one and through traffic instead of congesting the shopping area, can carry on at 100 km/hour. Tokoroa is another example.

Indeed we turned off into Tokoroa’s shop-ping centre for morning tea.

The reality is there’s two kinds of travellers-those intent on getting to their destination south and those who will turn off for accom-modation, a meal or a cuppa or shopping.

In Blenheim’s case the congestion occurring in Grove Road and Main Street could be alleviated by a by-pass.

Travellers and trucks headed to Christch-urch can get on the road without experiencing frustration and lost time wending their way via Grove Road and Main Street.

For staff and councillors who don’t know myopic - it means short-sighted.

Shelby Wright

Bypass for Blenheim?

Dear Ed,Recently the council raised parking meter

fees in central Blenheim from 80c an hour to $1.50 an hour.

This contrasts with council attitudes to cen-tral business districts (CBD) in other centres.

For example Tauranga gives CBD free parking up to 9 am and after 3 pm.

Rotorua was similar and Nelson I believe has similar incentives.

The attitude of Marlborough council that parking fees are a cash cow is wrong.

Why not have more “time limit” parking ranging from 15 minutes to 60 minutes?

Who made the decision to go from 80c to $1.50 an hour?

Probably management? Did councillors have a say?Frank Henry

Dear Ed,I belong to an organisation C.A.R.E

Marlborough which gives support to people who are recovering from different types of mental illness.

I assist in several ways as a Peer Support worker, which means making members feel comfortable in a place where people are not being discriminated against.

When the people are in the community there can be stigma about mental illness.

So, being involved with C.A.R.E Marlborough can help a person to cope and have a sense of belonging which helps support a person’s recovery.

People can drop in to our house and find comfort and support.

Meals are provided six days a week and members can bring family and friends to the house each Saturday afternoon.

There are activity outings and we are plan-

ning a camp at Kaiteriteri in November this year and will be fundraising at Mega Mitre 10 on Saturdays.

I also attend training for Peer Support work-ers and meetings in Blenheim and Nelson, which are very friendship oriented, to discuss our plans.

We have a Support Manager and a board of which I take part.

I no longer feel afraid of facing other people in the community who would express that my illness was terrible.

Mental illness is something that reflects in my family, being part of C.A.R.E Marlborough has given me a sense of belonging.

We trust and respect each other. We are fair to one another.Anon.

Young ambition

The journey to becoming a professional chef isn’t easy, Ashley says.

At the tender age of 23 Ashley is the head chef and manager of Picton restaurant Red Salt after years of training, work experience and hard work.

He was 14 when he first started looking for a job working in a kitchen.

“I knew I had a passion for food so my parents helped me get a job at the Rus-sely Hotel which was part of Christchurch’s Scenic Group.

“I started out as a kitchen hand, washing dishes and doing anything the other chefs told me to. But I was happy with that, I just wanted to get a foot in the door.”

Ashley was there for six months before it closed down to be replaced by a retirement village.

He went for a position with the Cotswold Hotel, also part of the Scenic Hotels Group as a kitchen hand and it wasn’t long before opportunities began to present themselves.

“I expressed to the chefs that I wanted to start learning the food side which worked out well as I was given the chance to assist with desserts.

“That there was my first launching point,” he grins.

After a period of time the hotel’s breakfast chef announced he was leaving and Ashley was then offered their position. He was at that stage aged 15.

“I was so stoked. There I was, 15 years old and taking over a breakfast station. I was pretty happy by then,” he laughs.

On his first day of work as the breakfast chef Ashley had to cater for 150 which he says was a real ‘baptism by fire’.

“Really, I was thrown into the deep end and had to learn to swim out. At that point it was make or break so I just went in head down, bum up and worked as hard as I could.

“They obviously saw something in me because I was offered an apprenticeship with training through CPIT.”

Juggling his training with the demands of work Ashley admits there were times he

‘doubted his ability’.“I remember working three weeks straight

of split shifts and on the second day I really wondered if this was what I wanted.

“I knew it was what I loved to do and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, so it was a matter of keeping positive and continuing to work hard,” he says.

Ashley qualified at 18 and was the youngest in the whole course intake he says. From there his employer the Scenic Hotels Group gave him the opportunity to transfer anywhere in the country.

“I wanted to stay in the South Island close to family so when the Blenheim Hotel offer came up I said yes. It included work for the Marlborough Convention Centre catering for big functions which I liked the challenge of.”

Ashley worked there for three years, but after a conversation with one of the head chefs where Ashley mentioned he wanted a new challenge, he was offered a position at the Red Salt Cafe Bar & Restaurant in Picton.

He was there right from the beginning, helping with the interior renovations before opening in February 2014.

One month into operations Ashley was asked to take over the management and running of the business.

“This was exactly the challenge I was look-ing for,” he says.

Ashley says much of his success was due to Scenic Hotels Group directors Earl and Lani Hagaman.

“Earl and Lani have always been good to me. They covered my training and qualifica-tion costs and have always made me feel valued.

“They also helped me to understand the business side of running Red Salt by provid-ing training and ongoing support. They are great people to work for,” he says.

Focusing on the future Ashley is gearing up for a big season in Picton with a new menu being launched and preparing for a busy cruise ship season.

“We are expecting just under 100,000 passengers this season, so it should be

really good.”Asked what his advice to youth wanting to

pursue a career would be, Ashley answers; “If you have a rough idea of what you want to do, just let people know.”

“See what is going on. If you don’t put a foot

in the door you won’t get anywhere.“Keep a positive attitude and don’t just go

into a job for a wage, go in with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and you will go a long way.”

Picton chef Ashley Guy began his career pursuit in his early teens, determined

to succeed. He talks to reporter Celeste Lodewyk

about his experiences and what advice he has for youth.

This hugely popular market held in Wynen Street will begin its third season this Satur-day (October 3), and committee members couldn’t be more excited.

“There’s a really good feeling among stall holders, everyone is getting really excited,” Chris Thoms says.

“Not only can people expect to see their favourite stall holders from last year, but we have some new faces on board this year.”

The growth of the market has ‘surpassed expectations’ says Chris, and has become a weekend destination for locals and travellers.

“It’s a neat place for market goers and

families. The vibe we have is relaxed and happy with plenty of laughter.

“People love to sit at the tables, enjoy some delicious food, listen to the performers and just enjoy what our creative stall holders have to offer.

“We are proud of what we do and the really unique thing about the Artisan Market is that you are buying from people who make their own products, so you hear their story and discover the passion behind what they do,” Chris says.

The market opens at 9am at the Wynen Street Carpark in Blenheim’s CBD and runs through to 1pm.

The Marlborough Artisan Market is weather dependent. If it’s raining it will be open again the next weekend.

By Jacob PageThe Thursday Zingers are put-

ting some zest back into three-part harmony.

The talented group of amateur singers is looking for new members as they prepare for the busy festive season.

Organiser Pam Nicholls says the group meets every Thursday night above Community House and sings songs from all over the world, incor-porating the strengths of everyone’s voices.

“The object is to have as much fun as possible and ensure people have the confidence to express their voices.”

The group does the occasional public “sharing” of their talent, often to community groups or rest homes.

Pam says they have no set genre of music and explore everything from contemporary to classical and everything in between.

They also like to test themselves

with foreign pieces.“That can be challenging but also a

big boost in confidence once people get the hang of it,” Pam says.

The group peaks at about 18 mem-

bers each week, but more members are always welcome to help with the harmony.

Men are also needed for the deeper tones.

Story and photo by Celeste LodewykBlenheim branch manager for SBS Bank

Greg Stretch found himself with pie on his face yesterday morning.

Staff gathered at the front of the business on Market Street to throw pie in Greg’s face

as part of Blue September’s campaign Pie Your Boss.

Standing nervously as he waited for the plate of cream, Greg jokingly told his staff; “You only have one shot at this.”

As cream splattered all over Greg and the

pavement the staff cheered.SBS and the subsidiary companies Finance

Now, Southsure and FANZ got together to raise awareness and money for Blue September.

The ‘Pie Your Boss’ campaign enabled

staff to cover their boss’s face in cream should a certain dollar threshold be met.

The campaign was a great success with over $3500 raised and 25 bosses pied, including Greg.

Mental HealthFoundationof New Zealand Mental Health Awareness Week 5 - 11

October

The Mental Health Awareness Week is marked in over 150 countries and in New Zealand, runs from October 5 - 11.This year’s theme is ‘Give –

your time, your words, your presence’.

“Your time – te wa ki a koe, your words – o kupu, your presence – ko koe tonu.”

The awareness week encourages people to do something nice for a friend, or a stranger.

Thank someone, smile, or volunteer your time by joining a community group.

Seeing yourself, and your happi-ness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and cre-ates connection with the people around you.

It feels good to give and everybody has something to offer. How will you play your part? • Take opportunities to support and

advocate for groups, friends, fam-ily or neighbours in need.

• Give a smile away!• Organise or promote random acts

of kindness days at school, work or when you’re out with a group.

• Offer to mow the grass verge of your neighbour.

• Join a community clean up day - could be a local stream, river, beach or park - or a tree planting project with friends or family.

• If you have fruit trees pop your excess fruit out on the street with a “help yourself” sign.

• Donate old toys, books, sports equipment, clothes etc to a local charity.

• Offer to help an older neighbour with their wheelie bins on rubbish/recycling days.

• Give a compliment – acknowledge what someone in your life has done well.

If you support someone with a mental illness, you may face practical and emotional problems from time to time.

There is no right or wrong way to support someone with a mental illness. How you support someone will depend on you and the person you care for.

There a re a number of Marlborough based organisa-tions which can provide sup-port, advice, advocacy and most

importantly... a listening ear.The important thing to remem-

ber is that you are not alone.Whether you yourself are ex-

periencing mental health issues, finding it hard to understand your feelings or simply feel alone, there is always someone who understands your situation and can help.

Reach out, talk to people and don’t isolate yourself.

Reach out, talk to people and don’t isolate yourself.

Reach out to friends and family

Exercising makes you feel good. Discover a physical activity you enjoy and one that suits your level of mobility and fitness. Do what you can, enjoy what you do, be active and move your mood.

Give the gift of time

A simple hug can turn a frown upside down.

Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look

a little harder. Let the challenges make you strong.

Z petrol station is giving $20,000 worth of gear away to local junior rugby clubs, intermediate and primary schools to show support for New Zealand’s future kids in black.

Z’s General Manager Marketing, Jane Anthony, says Z is excited about its partnership with the All Blacks to give a boost to a few lucky junior rugby clubs and primary/intermediate schools.

“We’re thrilled to be an official All Blacks partner during this massive rugby year and to be able to use this partnership to support grassroots children’s rugby.

“All Blacks are made on school fields and club grounds around New Zealand.

“So to show support for our future kids in black, we’re giving $20,000 worth of gear away to local junior rugby clubs and intermediate/primary schools,” said Jane.

All customers have to do to participate is head in to their local Z, spend $20 or more (on non-tobacco purchases), get a unique code and cast their vote online by 4 October 2015.

For every vote, customers will also get a free vote to pass on to a mate, to maximise the chances of their chosen club/school winning.

Jane says that one winner and two run-ners up will be randomly drawn from all eligible entries on Friday October 9.

“We have some pretty awesome prizes up for grabs.

“Not only does the winner get a $10,000 prize of rugby equipment, the winning club/school’s coaches will also get a high-powered coaching session from an NZR approved rugby coach, so they can coach their own teams to greatness.”

There are also two prizes of $5,000 worth of rugby equipment for the second and third placed club/school.

By Jacob PageSarah Lissaman and Cynthia de Joux were

the standouts for the Blenheim Rowing Club at the New Zealand Masters Championship at Twizel’s Lake Ruataniwha.

The duo teamed up to win the A double and A coxless pair finals.

They got silver in the B and C double while Cynthia finished second in her single event.

Coach Mouse Taylor says both women have proven over the last three seasons they are formidable in their own age grade and more than competitive against some of the younger women.

The Blenheim Club won six golds, 12 silvers and two bronze medals over the weekend and also had three competitors in the North Island versus South Island quads and eights races.

Blenheim rowers also medalled in a number of composite crews throughout the weekend.

The crew had the oldest rower at the regatta in 83-year-old Brian Hutchison who won three gold medals in his age group.

Rod Henderson, who only has five per cent vision, won the para singles event.

More than 300 rowers competed at the event including some international calibre athletes who used the regatta as a tune-up for the World Masters Championship on

Waikato’s Lake Karapiro later in the season.Taylor says the regatta was successful for

many local rowers who had put in the hard yards in the weeks leading up to it.

Rowers make big impression

Sarah Lissaman and Cynthia de Joux were the standouts for the Blenheim Rowing Club at the New Zealand Masters Championships at Lake Ruataniwha.

Ray Waters claimed overall hon-ours in the Prosser Cup on Satur-day, the last event on the official Marlborough Harrier calendar for the 2015 season.

The cup was contested on the Hawkesbury circuit and was raced on handicap over a distance of 8.2 km.

The Prosser Cup doubles as the Women’s Road Handicap and Megan Kain claimed this title for the second successive year.

Megan’s husband Cameron re-corded the fastest actual time of 35 minutes and 10 seconds.

Alison Brook and Sheila Waters crossed the line together to jointly win the walking category while

children’s grade winners included Gemma Bishell, Luke Jones, Am-ber Bendell and Hunter Bendell.

Children’s prize-giving followed the afternoon racing. Jayden Lucas and Amber Bendell were named

as the recipients of the Vulcan and Western trophies.

The Vulcan Trophy is awarded to the Most Promising Midget (12 and under) Boy.

The Western Trophy is awarded to the Outstanding Midget (12 and under) Girl.

Senior prize-giving saw Allister Leach receive the President Trophy, awarded for Best Club Spirit.

Warren Hall was named as the recipient of the Presidents Sup-porters Cup and the John Western Memorial Cup for sportsmanship went to Dale Smit.

Barry Hyndman was named as the Most Improved Walker.

The Anita Neal Trophy for the

Most Improved Runner throughout the season was taken out by Tim Hamilton and Margaret Hazelwood was named Marlborough Harrier of the Year.

Bill Hunter, Wynnie Wu Cos-grove and David Cosgrove were recognised for their long-standing contribution to the club and were recipients of 20 year service badges.

The popular Marlborough Sum-mer Runners programme gets un-derway on Thursday 15th October but in the meantime several club members will compete in the Rab-bit Island Rampage next Sunday.

The event doubles as the South Island Masters Games Half Mara-thon.

Waters wins Prosser Cup

Ray Waters.

Pure Samoa and Uso Fiafia are almost certain to face each other in the final of Marlborough’s senior volleyball competition despite two rounds still remaining.

Pure Samoa had consistent attacks to deny Bella’s Team any real chance of winning.

Phil Ligaliga from Bella’s Team had some excellent spikes and Jeff Spurlock an amazing block during one of the rallies, the final result saw Pure Samoa win two sets to one.

In the other game on court 1, the leading team Uso Fifia were up against Cri Clovers and were completely dominant showing all their skills.

Great hitting by Afa Lauvai for Uso Fifia saw them win three sets to none.

On court 2, a close game between Tree Fellas and Woodbourne Conscripts saw Woodbourne go out to an early lead in all the games that lead extending to eight points in set one but with BJ Carr serving, Tree Fellas

got ahead and ran out the winners in set one by 29 to 27.

The second set was just as close with Hunter Nichols serving well and keeping Woodbourne in the game but again Tree Fellas came from behind with some magic blocking from Gary Rowse for Tree Fellas.

The final set two score was 25 to 23. In the final set Woodbourne got some

momentum going and took it out 25 to 23.The other game on court 2 was between

Woodbourne Conscripts and Dank Lords who by the way only had four players to Woodbourne’s seven.

Set one saw a fine run of play by Dank Lords in which they took out set one 25 to 16.

The second set was much closer with Dank Lords winning 25 to 23.

The third set was all Woodbourne’s and they finally won 25 to 16.
