17 Welcome to Winter!

Welcome to winter, whether you are a fan of the colder months or not it is official, winter has arrived, so let’s make the most of it and Get Out and Into Winter!

Winter in Docklands and around town is definitely not the time to become a recluse, it’s the time to rug up in your winter woollies and embrace all the magic this season has on offer and so much is going on right here in the precinct!

With the fireworks scheduled to blast the end of the working week away, this is the time to make plans to catch up with friends or family and grab a bite to eat from one of the fabulous vantage points along the water front overlooking the best Friday night waterscape you’ll see from anywhere in Melbourne.

We bring in our June issue a special winter feature on some of the excellent shows and exhibitions that are on nearby. A favourite for families is of course Disney on Ice presenting Worlds of Fantasy and we have included an interview with Brian Duckworth, a Victorian who is a principal skater in the show who shares the spotlight with his wife and skating partner. We discover the magic isn’t limited to just on the ice!

We also bring you a story on Melbourne’s best international export and a personal favourite, Circus OZ which coincidentally also features love under lights, as Rebecca Howden discovered

speaking with on and off stage partners, Mason West and Rowan Heydon-White.

Another sensational art exhibition is featured this month at the Hilton South Wharf, Marvellous Melbourne is not to be missed along with a visit for one night only by His Holiness, the fourteenth Dalai Lama who will answer questions from the audience on Happiness, Life & Living– Karma and Reincarnation.

We are fortunate at 3008 to have leading financial commentators as regular contributors and in this issue Tom Elliott explains his views on the budget that never was while Andrew Hewison presents your End of Financial Year checklist. In addition we are proud in introduce In Business a new regular feature of our business section.

For our sporting enthusiasts, it was a knockout to secure an interview with Danny, the Green Machine, Green as he prepares for the boxing event of the year taking on Antonio, Magic Man, Tarver in what commentators are flagging as ‘Judgement Day’.

Check out the June issue and get ready to Get Out and Into Winter!

In the April Issue of 3008 we asked your opinion on whether getting the Wheel back in motion was enough to get Docklands back on track. (issue 55 / Will Wheel In Motion Get Docklands On Track) Charles (working at Site One) responded as follows:

‘I am responding to your question ‘is this enough to get Docklands on track’ in the April 2011 issue of 3008docklands. It will take a lot, to take what I would call corrective action as the area needs a fresh approach. What we see today is the by-product of what in hindsight might be described as a land grab when the area was slated for ‘repurposing’. It is not evident that people using the space was a matter of concern for the original planners.

There are several issues which the urban planners and developers would appear to have left up to the individual building and project developers to address. Unfortunately, only a ‘grand plan’ would have been able to correct this, with the individual developers responsible for upholding the principles of the plan. What do I see as issues?

1) docklands streets are wind tunnels. The prevailing winds are from the East with the harbour offering no natural wind break. Unfortunately the buildings & roads have been laid out to ‘funnel’ those winds, thereby amplifying the slightest breeze into strong gusts along the main (generally) east-west layout of the foreshore areas and streets.

2) lack of green space. There are few parkland areas such as exist along St Kilda rd or street plantings as occur in Melbourne’s suburbs. We therefore are restricted to ‘concrete-scapes’ or bay views.

3) Egress. all streets funnel vehicular traffic to one road north-south, which then serves to deliver vehicles to already overcrowded east-west routes at the northern and southern ends. The traffic problems will not ease (especially as the development

continues and more people are brought to the area by businesses) unless and until the north-south delivery road can also feed traffic beyond the bounds of Flinders St and Footscray rd-dudley St to the north.

Further considerations to improve Docklands - to make it more people friendly might include:

• A light rail system which does not intrude on the current surface traffic (cars and trams) via an elevated rail link (as in Chicago or perhaps a monorail system). This would provide mass transport which does not further congest the existing, limited street space nor pose a risk to pedestrians.

• Improving the ‘pedestrian’ access to cater for the physically disadvantaged amongst us. Especially for east-west accessibility on Bourke St and its pedestrian link, plus La Trobe & Collins Sts.

• A ‘green barrier’, which includes the planting of large trees, to create a dense park beside Piggot Street. The purpose of this being to green and also provide a wind break at street level.

• Remove significant portions of hard surface areas on the western side of Harbour Esplanade and replace this with trees and soft spaces. These last two items would make it more enjoyable to enjoy the environs as a pedestrian, with softer surfaces to walk on.

The comments I hear most distil to the fact that the area needs to be considerate of the needs of people living and working in the environs, not just corporations and sporting entities wanting a facility to house their employees and hold their games.

do you agree with Charles, do you have suggestions to improve the precinct? Email [email protected] with your comments or suggestions, you may remain anonymous if you wish.

YOUr SaY... A week after a new government study found alcohol to be a major contributor to weekend offences, the fourth Operation Unite since December 2009 was aimed at key areas of Melbourne which included Docklands.

Liquor licensees in the precinct were under particularly close scrutiny over the weekend of May 13-15 as Director of Liquor Licensing in Victoria, Mark Brennan, declared concerns about anti-social behaviour in the Docklands area in consultation with police.

Consumer Affairs Minister Michael O’Brien welcomed the declaration which gave police authority to ban troublemakers for up to 72 hours from Docklands. “The ability to issue banning notices within Docklands will give police the power to act quickly to prevent anti-social behaviour before it happens in and around licensed premises, including Etihad Stadium.

“The Victorian Government has already extended the freeze on the granting of late-night liquor licences and increased penalties and new laws to deal with drunken, loutish and threatening behaviour. These measures will deliver improved safety for the precinct’s growing number of residents, workers and visitors and help licensees better manage their venues” added Minister O’Brien.

The Minister continued to say that those complying with acceptable behaviour should be able to go out and enjoy themselves without their fun being spoilt by anti-social behaviour.

do you agree that particular liquor licensing scrutiny in docklands is the answer? did Operation Unite successfully fulfil its objectives? do you have a better suggestion or opinion? let us know your thoughts, email [email protected] you may remain anonymous.

More than $1.9 million will be offered to community groups as part of the City of Melbourne’s 2012 Grants and Sponsorship program.

New grants introduced this year include the late night programming category within Arts Grants that will activate Melbourne into a vibrant 24-hour city, and Community Capital Grants within Community Services Grants to support the delivery of community services and programs.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the Grants and Sponsorship program provided opportunities for

individuals and organisations to deliver quality programs, events, products and services in the community.

“Our grants and sponsorship programs seek to support the many groups that bring life and character into our city. Whether you’re an artist, athlete or community group , I would encourage you to apply for grants and sponsorship so you can make a contribution to Melbourne,” the Lord Mayor said.

Around $1.2million will be available under the Arts grants category, $656,000 for Community

Services grants and $80,000 for Active Melbourne Sport and Recreation grants.

The grants are available for projects and programs that occur in or provide services within the City of Melbourne and must be completed by the end of 2012.

Future Melbourne (People and Creative City) Chair, Councillor Jennifer Kanis said the Grants and Sponsorship program provides the opportunity for a diverse range of people to become actively involved in the community.

“Our grants support high quality projects while encouraging growth and innovation. The program is an invaluable opportunity to assist those who are making an active contribution to the community,” Cr Kanis said.

Funding applications for Active Melbourne Sport and Recreation, Community Services and Arts grants close Friday 24 June.

The draft budget for 2011 - 12 was considered at a special meeting of Future Melbourne Committee and Council in mid May and is now open for public consultation until Friday 10 June 2011.

A historic investment in the city’s future underpins the City of Melbourne’s draft 2011-12 Budget, with plans to spend a record $107.3 million enhancing and building new infrastructure.

To cater for ongoing population growth in Melbourne City, Council has outlined its proposed economic plan to ensure the delivery of a range of projects, initiatives and quality services to meet the needs of residents, workers and visitors well into the future.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said with the city’s population expected to reach 100,000 by

the end of the year and to grow to as many as 200,000 people by 2030, it was vital that Council’s draft budget led to continued economic prosperity and investment and ensured Melbourne remained one of the most liveable and sustainable cities in the world.

Despite the record investment in infrastructure, the Lord Mayor said Council would not increase the financial burden on residents and businesses. The draft budget outlines a rate increase of 1.65 per cent believed to be the lowest rate rise of any Victorian local government and Australian capital city.

“Three years of responsible budgeting by this Council has meant that ratepayers are reaping the rewards. Based on current forecasts by the end of this Council’s term we would have

invested $1.3 billion in programs and services for the people of Melbourne, including a $250 million investment in infrastructure,” the Lord Mayor said.

The draft budget outlines a total spend of $346.55 million on programs and services. With $107.3 million dedicated to capital works and with more than $50 million of this to be spent on new infrastructure.

Inclusions pertinent to Docklands in the Budget Draft are $2 million (which includes $1 million from the State Government) to be used for the design and commencement of construction works associated with City of Melbourne’s commitment to building a library and community centre at Docklands.

Chair of the Future Melbourne (Connected City) Committee and Co-Chair of the

Docklands Coordination Committee, Councillor Kevin Louey said a key area of focus for the coming year would be taking Docklands into the next decade.

“While the first decade of Docklands was about the buildings, the next phase will be about the people and investing in community infrastructure. A key project will be a library and community centre. When complete it will not only provide a state of the art service to local residents and visitors but also create a fantastic community hub,” Councillor Louey said.

Public Consultation is open until 5pm on Friday 10th of June. a final version will be considered by Council on 28 June 2011. Contact Council Business on 9658 9658 or visit www.melbourne.vic.gov.au for further information.

Works associated with the fourth and final row of trees along Harbour Esplanade (Harbour side) are currently being undertaken, which will complement the already green spine between Bourke Street and Docklands Drive.

To ensure the safety of the public, cyclone fencing has been installed and will be progressively removed once the trees have been planted. During this time there will be minimal disruptions to pedestrians and cyclists as works take place along the old tram reserve. The remaining trees will be planted during business hours, with traffic management personnel on-site to direct pedestrians and cyclists as required.

Major construction activity as part of the first stage of the Harbour Esplanade redevelopment is now almost complete.

Additional works such as interface tie-ins, final tree-planting and landscaping works will continue to be completed and are on schedule for completion by mid 2011. During this time there will be minimal disruptions for pedestrian and cyclists, with no expected impacts for vehicle traffic or trams.

As is normal for construction projects of this scale, a final inspection of Harbour Esplanade is underway to identify any rectification works that are required and to ensure they are speedily completed by mid 2011.

if you would like to receive updates directly on the redevelopment: [email protected]

While the open-sided sheds were disassembled over a decade ago to make way for the first stages of the Docklands development, City of Melbourne chief executive, Kathy Alexander has indicated that the council, in conjunction with VicUrban, are exploring the possible reinstatement of the former sheds to encourage more activity along the waterfront areas at Docklands.

do you believe this would encourage more interest to the area or would infringe on the already limited public open spaces? Tell us your thoughts, email [email protected]

During May, VicUrban and the City of Melbourne invited stakeholders and the community to comment on the key directions and priority actions draft drawn over the past 12 months to assist shape the direction for the second decade of development.

A document will be launched in July outlining findings from the recent presentations. The community will have a month to provide feedback and 3008 will bring you further details in our upcoming issues. Stay tuned.

Having come from Brighton, UK, where the first ever green Member of Parliament was voted in last year, I’ve always thought it would be pretty hard (nigh impossible) to find another city that was so ahead of itself in terms of thinking green. I think my search may be over! Melbourne is internationally known as a cosmopolitan city but as well as this, it has a rapidly evolving, environmentally-conscious side that not everyone is privy to.

I met up with Emily Ballantyne-Brodie, founder of Melbourne-based organisation ‘Urban Reforestation’ which is dedicated to creating green spaces within the hustle and bustle of the urban city of Melbourne. The emphasis within Urban Reforestation is the entire design process involved in

this creation. Whether you have a balcony on which you can grow your own produce, or just a windowsill where herbs can be cultivated, this three-year-old business can help you to realise the ability to sustain a garden even in the smallest of places. Much of their ideology stems from ideas relating to permaculture which is a sustainable land use design.

Simultaneously to the physical act of growing produce, Urban Reforestation encourage one to engage in their direct environment by observing their own being in relation to the world around them. They aim to create a new ideology amongst communities where people evaluate their concept of well-being and the things that are important to them. Emily sees that there is a deeper level to consumerist attitudes and she wants

to dispel common misconceptions of well-being which result from this. Part of the design process involves re-designing entire attitudes towards one’s environment.

Changing what fulfils people is no mean feat! Emily has grown up with a ‘green mind’ but her and the rest of the Urban Reforestation team want to break down negative stigmas attached to eco-friendly attitudes. Gone are the days when only ‘hippy-types’ are those who recycle. Recycling, reducing waste and a sense of team-work are all positive outcomes of Urban Reforestation’s objectives. Everyone can be involved if they have the desire.

Although Emily sees there is still a long way to go in terms of making positive and impacting changes on a large scale, she recognises the potential that Melbourne offers. This organisation’s merit has been affirmed by the fact of its nomination for a Melbourne Award in this year’s ceremony. Entered into the category ‘Contribution to sustainability by a community organisation’, Urban Reforestation is already making headway in Melbourne and being recognised for its impressive efforts.

So, how can you help the growth of this venture? As an evolving concept, Urban Reforestation are looking to create green spaces in your, urban environments.

Local businesses can be assisted with setting up rooftop gardens and bringing natural influences into even the most corporate of environments. At home, you can start by growing your own produce or encouraging your local neighbourhood to develop a community garden. If you think that your business or employer would benefit from these positive changes or you just want to find out how you can be involved then look at www.urbanreforestation.com for further details. Your fingers may be greener than you think!

The ANZ Building at 833 Collins Street is arguably one of the standout buildings in the Docklands precinct and has recently won the Australian development of the year award at the 2011 Property Council of Australia/ Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards also winning the Colliers International award for best office development.

ANZ’s global headquarters topped the awards list as Victoria won seven of the 15 awards announced by Property Council of Australia chief executive Peter Verwer. The ANZ development was chosen as the overall winner from a field of over 100 finalists Australia wide.

As one of the world’s greenest bank buildings the ANZ Centre features a tri-generation

plant, black water recycling, rainwater harvesting. Solar panels, landscaped roofing, wind turbines and an under-floor air conditioning system that uses cool water from the Yarra River to reduce demand on the cooling towers.

Victorian Property Council executive director Jennifer Cunich said the ANZ Centre represented a new generation of high quality building and development. ‘’ANZ Centre demonstrates the marriage of innovative design and truly sustainable features which have set a global environmental and social sustainability benchmark.’’

ANZ’s global headquarters is a low-rise 10-storey building with a central atrium and floor plates which are fully connected. It is also home to 6500 staff and is the largest single tenanted commercial building in Australia with 83,550 square metres of space.

The relocation of ANZ’s global headquarters has been a great success story to date not just in terms of the building but in all respects. Last November 3008 spoke with Kate Langan, Group General Manager Property for ANZ who added that the design of the building gave staff flexible working areas in collaborative spaces, hubs and link spaces which had resulted in better outcomes for staff and had generated greater productivity as well.

“We interviewed about 4000 Melbourne staff before we moved here and we recently resurveyed them and there is a clear lift in staff feeling energised about their workplace and about 50% said they felt their productivity had improved, which is really good news” said Langan.

Taking up an invitation late last year for a tour of the building, it comes as no surprise that The ANZ Centre has won these prestigious awards, it’s an incredible building and workplace, pop in and have a look around.

Hassell/Lend Lease Design were the Architects for the ANZ Centre and Bovis Lend Lease was the builder.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet is returning to Australia in June and as part of the ten day visit, he will engage with Melbourne audiences at South Wharf through a series of Public Conversations on HaPPiNESS, liFE & liViNg - KarMa aNd rEiNCarNaTiON.

The Dalai Lama has, quite unexpectedly become one of the most visible figures on the planet. And yet, that very visibility often gets in the way of the ideas he’s speaking for. His warmth and charisma are so strong that those who listen to him sometimes don’t see behind them to what is really lasting and has little to do with this particular being. In that sense, he may be one of the least seen figures on the planet.

This your chance to get to know more about the Dalai Lama as you have the opportunity to converse with him on Happiness, Life and Living. Unique to these Conversations is the opportunity for those attending to personally ask questions to His Holiness and engage in conversation with one of the world’s most revered and respected living beings.

This will be the Dalai Lama’s 7th visit to Australia with his first being in 1982.

His Holiness visit to Australia in 2007 was by far the largest visit he has undertaken in Australia so far. The logistics, transport and security issues were enormous with His Holiness leaping on and off helicopters, planes and motorcades to deliver his message to over 200,000 Australians.

Meetings with the then Prime Minister, Mr Howard, and leader of the Opposi-tion, Mr Kevin Rudd, occurred despite extensive opposition from the Chinese government. His Holiness was extremely pleased by the obvious interest of the Australian people, ensuring that he returned to Australia again in 2008, 2009 and now this year in June.

Leading Melbourne Chefs cooked up a storm raising awareness of stroke in Australia at Dockland’s Central Pier.

The National Stroke Foundation’s ‘Food for Thought’ event was held for the first time in Melbourne on May 12th showcasing the talents of seven of Melbourne’s elite chefs cooking together to raise awareness of stroke in Australia.

Over 250 guests enjoyed a six course degustation menu with matching wines prepared by popular Melbourne chefs; Ian Burch and Darren Purchese from Burch & Purchese, Michael Fox from Cecconi’s Cantina, Nathan Johnson from The Millswyn, Mathew Macartney from Chateau Yering, Riccardo Momesso from Sarti and Scott Pickett from The Point.

Chefs plated up their courses in front of paying guests who attended the charity event at Melbourne’s iconic Dockland’s venue; Peninsula C, to help raise awareness and challenge perceptions of stroke which affects more than 60,000 Australians each year.

Other celebrity guests included renowned journalist Jill Singer and her husband who has been affected by stroke and MCs for the evening included comedians Mark Mitchell and John Fleming.

National Stroke Foundation Acting CEO, Wendy Fromhold says that Food for Thought was the first of its kind held at Docklands and was such a success that it will definitely be an ongoing calendar event for the future.

In Australia, there is one stroke every 10 minutes. Stroke kills more women than breast cancer, more men than prostate cancer and will affect one in six people.

Visit www.strokefoundation.com.au or call 03 9670 1000 for more information.

How do you capture the essence of Melbourne? From the urban culture of inner-city laneways and street side cafes, to the crowds of football fans at the MCG, to the fashionistas coming out to play at the Spring Racing Carnival, Melbourne is a city of vibrant diversity, where the chic, the rambunctious and the downright quirky sit side-by-side.

Marvellous Melbourne - Its Art and Soul brings together pieces from 20 prominent Victorian artists, celebrating this rich and diverse culture through an eclectic collection of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and more. Curated by Jacqueline Taylor, OAM, and on display in the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf Lobby throughout the month of June, the exhibition tells a vibrant story of the inner city and its surrounding suburbs.

“Marvellous Melbourne” was a popular way to describe the city in the 1880s, when the gold rush propelled a burst of growth and development that seemed to herald the birth of a new world city. Since then, the streets have blossomed into a vibrant, bustling hive of art, sport and culture that have earned Melbourne a reputation as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Sophisticated, grungy and playful all at once, Melbourne thrives on a strong creative pulse, and each artist in this exhibition has captured a distinct part of the city’s cultural fabric. From Bill Bachman’s photographs of football culture, to Tom Alberts celebration of high fashion, right through to Christine Wrest Smith’s beautifully painted café scene, a broad spectrum of Melbourne’s unique flavours and colours are encapsulated and celebrated. This is the city from all angles, with all its nooks and crannies.

One core aspect of the city’s identity is its unique architecture and cultural sites-places where creativity flourishes and is shared. Peter Garnick’s photographs highlight some of the iconic buildings of the arts scene, including the Malthouse, the Melbourne Recital Centre, the MTC and the Forum theatre. With clever use of angles and an abstract, creative approach to his subjects, Garnick reveals the elegance and diversity of the urban environment, offering a view that

is both familiar and strange.

Then there is the lush abundance of trees, parks and gardens that thrive amongst the urban streets, invigorating city life. Anne Marie Graham’s sweet and joyful Royal Botanical Gardens paintings celebrate the fresh, blooming greenery that makes Melbourne capital of the Garden State. Her extraordinary use of colour evokes a sense of nostalgia, and the unique view of the gardens in Aggapanthus on the Yarra highlights the peaceful side of the bustling city.

And of course, there are the quirky characters that populate the city. Pamela Irving’s little bronze dog, Larry La Trobe, who famously guards the city square, is featured in her vibrant painting Luna Face 2. This time, he keeps watch over the grinning entrance of Luna Park, another of Melbourne’s favourite icons. These playful elements and the idiosyncrasies of the city reflect the sense of delight and celebration that underpins the whole exhibition.

If you need a reminder of how lively, unique and beautiful this city really is, Marvellous Melbourne - Its Art and Soul does the trick.

Well, it’s a small world after all when some of Disney’s best loved characters and stories come to Melbourne as part of Disney on Ice - Worlds of Fantasy, bringing four magical stories to life on the ice. This action-packed ice spectacular showcases characters from Disney/Pixar’s Cars and Disney’s Tinkerbell, The Lion King and the Little Mermaid and all in time for the winter school holidays.

3008 spoke to principal skater and Melbournian, Brian Duckworth and discovered that the magic of this ice spectacular isn’t just on the ice!

Should i say welcome back or welcome home?

I am still based in Melbourne, when I come home I go back up to Rochester where my parents and family live.

as a principal skater in disney on ice - Worlds of Fantasy, can you tell us a bit about the show and how it is constructed; is it four separate stories in one show?

There are four separate stories but all

brought together by Mickey and Minnie. We have Disney/Pixar’s Cars, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Tinkerbell is pretty much across the whole story.

ice skating looks deceivingly effortless until you try stepping out onto the ice, what aspect of the show do you find the most challenging, is it the technical side of the skating or the actual performance side?

The technical side. In the Lion King, my wife Melanie and I do a pair number as Simba and Nala which involves a lot of air lifts and spins and twirls and a lot of foot work and when we have finished that number I am pretty much done. When ice skating looks effortless that just means it is being done correctly and the performer is doing their job, it’s supposed to look effortless.

it must be wonderful to be performing with your wife; that would be an experience in itself?

It is wonderful, it’s a blessing. We have been skating together for ten years and we have been together for eleven years and married

for the past year and a half and it just works so well for us, we get along extremely well on and off the ice so it makes our work on the ice together magic.

You joined disney on ice 16 years ago becoming a principal skater with the show in 1999, what is it about disney on ice that you enjoy so much after all these years?

Performing is so addictive, I am so fortunate to work with a great company that travels year round and allows me to do what I love and performing is just something that is so hard to give up. It’s the instant gratification from the audience, seeing the smile on the children and adults faces is just heart warming.

How much preparation and rehearsal goes into each new disney on ice production?

From conception of a new show it can be seven months before we even touch the ice. First the story is developed, then the choreographers begin choreographing to the music and by the time they start working with the skaters it can be three months later. By that time everything is pretty much done though, the props and set have been designed; the lighting is worked out and then we begin rehearsing for about 5-6 weeks on the ice, 6 days a week, 8 hours a day and sometimes longer.

What have been the highlights for you with disney on ice over your career?

Performing in front of our home audience is always a highlight, coming back to Melbourne and performing as the solo pair act with Mel is always a great highlight.

Have you visited the Medibank icehouse at docklands? do you think if a facility like the icehouse had of existed when you were starting out your career might have been different or easier?

I have been there and it is just beautiful! When I walked into the Icehouse I actually shed a tear because I wished that I had that kind of opportunity when I was younger training and competing. I have had lengthy conversations about this with a particularly prominent person in the ice skating world who went through the same struggles as I did, but in the end, we did what we had to do.

We were taking 2 hour drives up to Bendigo to the large ice rink there and skating on the weekends and getting as much ice time as possible, sometimes at 5am or even 11pm at night through to 1am on Saturday nights. We made our success happen in any case, so in the end our careers may not have worked out any differently, but I wish I had the opportunity to know the difference - but that’s not possible anyway.

Join Mickey and Minnie Mouse, lightening McQueen, Tinker Bell, Simba, ariel along with many more Disney favourites as you journey through both classic and new Disney stories. The ice spectacular showcases world-class skating, breathtaking set design and amazing animatronics which make Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy an unforgettable experience for the whole family!

Winter is upon us, but the colder months don’t necessarily have to mean coughs, colds and sniffles for you and your family. There are simple things that you can do to increase you natural resistance and ensure that you stay healthy during the coming months.

Our best defence against germs and bacteria is a strong and well-functioning immune system. Its job is to protect us from disease, and to increase our ability to resist infections. Ways to build immunity include:

diet: What we eat is the most important element to keeping our immune system healthy and strong. Choose a diet high in lean meats, wholegrains and a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, as they contain the vitamins and antioxidants that our body needs to protect itself. Try and chose different coloured fruits and vegetables as they give a more diverse mix of antioxidants. If you’re craving

some warming comfort food, try a healthy homemade soup or casserole that includes all of these ingredients. Include plenty of protein, as it is the building block for a healthy body, mind, and immune system.

Vitamins and Supplements: Increase your intake of Vitamin C (citrus fruits, capsicum, broccoli, and kiwifruit) Vitamin E (seeds, vegetable oils, and grains), Carotenoids (red, green, orange and yellow vegetables) Zinc (oysters, lean red meat, fish, poultry, wholegrain cereals) and garlic. These foods help produce infection - fighting blood cells, are great sources of antioxidants, and help your body produce anti-bodies to destroy bacteria. You may want to consider taking a vitamin supplement to help you meet your nutritional needs.

drink Water: Our bodies need for water remains the same even in winter. Try to consume 8 glasses every day to ensure you remain hydrated. As a variation, drink it warm with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Exercise: Is one of the most powerful ways to boost your immune system so keep moving this Winter. There is no need to hibernate inside either. Rug up, go outside and get some fresh air. Many of us spend all day inside breathing in filtered, stale air and other people’s germs. If early morning or evening is too cold for you, incorporate a quick 20 walk into your lunch break at work.

Sleep: Our immune system repairs and strengthens itself when we sleep, so it’s important to ensure you get 8 hours of quality sleep every night. Many people also sleep with their mobile phones in their bedroom. Mobile phones and other electrical equipment give off electromagnetic pollution, causing our immune system to keep active when it is supposed to be replenishing. Get into the habit of switching phones off, or turning on to flight mode overnight to give your immune system a rest.

These simple tips are easy to incorporate into your every day routine and will help restore the body’s natural healing

potential and ensure the good health of your family this winter.

The other day my girlfriend told me (quite matter-of-factly I might add) that her one-year old knows how to work her iphone. “Ohh yeh… he knows how to select music,” she says.

Last night, my sister-in-law told me her 15 month old also knows how to work her itouch, again matter-of-factly. However, let me add that her husband seemed rather surprised to hear this, which was kind of comforting for me while I am sitting wondering if my 1 year old is not “in with the times” of these “i” devices.

So I now sit and wonder is this a good thing, a bad thing, or just something our kids are adapting to with the new modern era of iphones and ipads?

The other day, a lady came into the coffee shop with her young child, probably no older than 3, immediately sat him down and pulled out her iphone for him to play with at the table. Whatever happened to the colouring-in books with fancy Crayola pens and pencils? Are we “modernising” our kids too soon and too early and forgetting about the raw fundamentals of early developmental play? Or are we as parents trying to find the most quick and

easy way to entertain our children so we can sit and have a coffee while reading the paper in peace?

Maybe I am not in with the crowd, and call me old fashioned, but I can’t help but wonder what this new modern world of “i” gadgets is teaching to our children?

Free play, imaginative play is so important for children’s development to help and empower children to reach social, emotional and intellectual milestones. Maybe when my 1 year old is a 3 year old I will crack onto the “i” idea so I can have a morning coffee, but I only hope we leave these gadgets for the café.

S OZ

By Rebecca Howden

In 2011 Circus Oz invites you into a time where romance meets technology and everything is hand-made and steam-powered - especially the masterful skill and commanding strength of the performers.

For most couples, working together is somewhat fraught with danger. But when your work involves flying through the air on a trapeze and hanging upside down from poles, things are… a little different.

Circus Oz performers Rowan Heydon-White and Mason West met when they were starring together in a show in New Zealand. Three years later, they’re still tumbling and twirling on stage together, and Heydon-White says that neither their romantic relationship nor their working relationship has hindered the other.

“We do work all day together and live together as well, so there’s really no time apart,” she says. “But in a circus, there’s a lot of trust. If I was going to fall, I’d expect him to catch me. So fighting isn’t really a possibility - there are more important things.

“Because we have different strengths as well, we help each other more than we get competitive. He helps me with my acrobatics, and I help him with things like straightening his legs and pointing his toes.”

The cooperative nature of the whole circus environment seems to help prevent tension too. “The whole group has that element of trust and community,” she says. “Like, it’s a great thing when we do something amazing and we congratulate each other. You trust everyone to cover for you and help you out, and make the show great that way.”

The couple, along with the ten other members of the Circus Oz troupe, are busy rehearsing for their performance of Steampowered, set to open in the big top at Birrarung Marr on June 22nd. Inspired by steampunk culture, a science-fiction genre centred on an imaginary Victorian age, where everything runs by brass and copper clockwork and incredible steam-powered inventions, the show promises all the quirkiness and spark Circus Oz is known for.

“The show this year is going to be a little bit more explosive than last year,” Heydon-White says. “The steampunk theme is really fun, because we get to play with engines and steam power and body mechanics and all that kind of jazz. We’ve added a bit more spice and pump to last years acts, and added some new acts as well.

“My favourite part to do is the group acts, where we’re all on stage, having a blast and doing crazy tricks. It looks like complete chaos to the audience, but we all know what’s going on! Acrobatics is kind of like organised chaos.”

Like most professional circus performers, Heydon-White’s love for all things acrobatic started young. “I started flying around on a trapeze when I was about eleven,” she says. “I did it as an after school sport in Byron Bay, and fell in love with it. So I just kept flying for years, and got more and more addicted to it. I just loved the feeling of falling from the trapeze onto the net and just bouncing around.”

After a brief reprise when she went to study communications at Charles Sturt University, the lure of the circus found her again. Then she threw herself full-time into training and performing, appearing in circuses all around

New Zealand- where in 2008, she met West.

“We had done a festival together previously, and sort of worked together from a distance,” she says. “But in this show, we worked quite closely. We did a duo pole act, and because we were the only two circus performers amongst some actors, musicians and clowns, we had to work together to train up the others in a few tricks. And from there, we just fell for each other.”

The couple only perform one act on stage together - a Chinese pole act they’ve been adapting and refining for years since they first worked together. For Steampowered,Heydon-White says it’s taking on a new direction once again.

“The pole act we did together last year was a romantic act. It was the story of a young relationship, so it was really playful at the beginning and then moved into romanticism,” she says. “This year though, we’ve added another performer in, so we’re going for a completely different feel. It’s going to be more about mechanics in the body and how it moves.”

The possibilities of human movement and the limits of the body are a personal fascination for Heydon-White. “My favourite thing about being in the circus is pushing your body to limits that you didn’t think were possible, or finding amazing ways that your body can work,” she says.

“I know sports does that a lot too, but with circus it’s a bit different, because we do it for an entertainment value. We do it with a joy in our mind, without that competitive streak. It’s more about community.”

See Circus Oz 2011: Steampowered from 22 June to 17 July at The Big Top, Birrarung Marr. Tickets from $27. www.circusoz.com

Don’t the days/weeks/months just keep rolling on? If you blink you’ll miss them. Hence throughout the year certain times act as prompters for us to re-evaluate certain areas of our lives. The New Year’s period prompts us to set our goals for the year ahead and make ridiculous resolutions we have no intention of keeping. Likewise as the new financial year dawns on us, it’s the perfect opportunity for a stock take on our financial affairs.

Some of the tips below may not be appropriate for everyone, but can provide benefit to some:

1. Superannuation:

- Maximise super contributions for the financial year:

• If over 50 years of age, you can contribute up to $50,000 in super at 15% tax. For those under 50, the limit is $25,000.

• Consider salary sacrificing your bonus as a means of boosting your super benefit and saving some tax.

• Ensure you do not exceed these contribution limits:

• If you do your contributions will be taxed at 46.5%, the highest marginal tax rate.

• Consider a spouse contribution to your spouse’s complying superannuation account:

• This involves making a non-concessional (after tax) contribution of funds to your spouse’s member account. If the contribution is over $3,000 and your

spouse earns less than $10,800 per annum they will be eligible for a tax rebate of $540.

- Co-contribution:

• If you earn under $61,920 per annum and make a non-concessional contribution to super the government will match the contribution up to $1,000.

• You do not need to apply for this. So long as you make the contribution to super and submit a tax return the government will make the co-contribution automatically.

- Super Splitting:

• This involves splitting contributions from one spouse’s member account to another and relates to concessional contributions made in the prior financial year (2009/10), such as employer contributions and salary sacrifice.

- Pensions:

• Ensure you have drawn the minimum pension from your member balance relative to your age.

• If you are operating a transition to retirement strategy this will involve ensuring the maximum threshold has not been exceeded.

- Withdrawal and re-contribution:

• Super balances are made up of concessional (taxable) and non-concessional (non taxable) components. This strategy involves making a lump sum withdrawal from your super balance which is likely to be made up of both components and re-contributing it back

to super as 100% non-concessional component. Please note: you must have satisfied a condition of release, i.e: retirement, to make such a withdrawal Why is this relevant? Because at death all concessional components paid to non dependents will attract 16.5% tax prior to distribution. This area is tricky and I suggest you contact your adviser to discuss further.

2. Personal:

- Pre-pay deductible loan interest:

• If for tax purposes you require greater tax deductions in this financial year, this might be a consideration.

- review your portfolio:

• If you plan to strip out any dead wood you may consider it in this financial year to

obtain the tax loss. Likewise you may want to offset losses with realised gains.

• Generally a good time to review your investment strategy, including shares and property, to ensure they are meeting your long term objectives. If they are not, it might be a good time to re-structure.

Every year I sit in front of the TV on budget night wondering (as many financial types do) what surprises the Federal Treasurer has in store for us the grateful Australian taxpayer. In some years my curiosity is rewarded, such as in 2010 when the much maligned Resources Super Profits Tax (RSPT) was announced with no prior leaks to a disbelieving (and quickly vengeful) mining industry.

In 2011, however, the Treasurer obviously decided to play things ultra safe, to the point where nothing new at all was learnt from his actual speech. As a result, this year’s budget can be considered to have never really occurred - except when you consider not so much what was in it, but what was left out. And here is where the questions begin.

First, there was no mention of the controversial Carbon Tax the government hopes to pass through Parliament some time in the next six months. While I accept that the exact design of this impost is yet to be hammered out, to avoid mentioning it altogether makes the rest of the budget somewhat difficult to take seriously. Perhaps Wayne Swan and Prime Minister Julia Gillard secretly share Tony Abbott’s scepticism over whether the carbon tax will ever really see the light of day.

Second, although the RSPT was dumped (along with former PM Kevin Rudd)

last year, its successor, the Mineral Resources Rent Tax (MRRT) was included in the budget even though the exact design of this tax is also yet to be agreed. Given the importance attached to the ongoing health of the mining industry (and its main customer, China), this omission was curious to say the least.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, the budget’s failed to detail a ‘Plan B’ in the

event that the Australian economy fails to grow as strongly as the official forecasts suggest. One of the truly strange things about the budget process is that all the figures reflect just one view economic growth - that concocted by the Treasury Department. In contrast, most businesses that attempt to forecast the future usually consider a range of scenarios, from the positive through to the very negative.

at present, Treasury’s economic predictions for the next two to three years may be summarised thus:

- China (and, to a lesser extent, india) will continue to grow strongly;

- as a result, the demand for australian commodities like coal and iron ore will also increase;

- Mining company profits will rise further; and

- The local economy will continue to pick up speed, leading to lower unemployment and potentially higher inflation.

Now all this sounds great, as long as the economic predictions turn into reality. But what if they

don’t? What if, for example, civil unrest breaks out in China (as it did infamously in mid 1989 when security forces cracked down on protests in Tiananmen

Square) and the economy slows dramatically as a result? Such an occurrence would be very bad for Australia’s mineral exports, and would place a large dent in the government’s economic growth forecasts. Yet nowhere it seems does the government acknowledge even the possibility that its prospective growth numbers over the next two years are not guaranteed.

Forecasting by its very nature is an inexact science. For this reason, governments, like businesses, should always plan for the unexpected - a sensible point not even considered in the 2011 Federal Budget.

NETWORKING EVENTS

Linkedin is the world’s biggest professional network and should not be overlooked for facebook and twitter. It’s by far the most successful social platform for a business-to-business environment and can do wonders for the growth of your company. Here’s 10 ways to make the most of it:

1. Be scannable - make sure your personal information is up to date and correct. You’re competing in search results against hundreds of people so to begin with, make sure the simple details are correct.

2. look at your status bar - it will tell you how complete your profile is. Work on your profile until it is 100%. The more information the better.

3. Previous employment history counts - even if you just want to promote your current position/company, use past work experience to give yourself some authority.

4. Flaunt education and awards - don’t be shy,you studied hard for a reason. If you have a strong educational background, make the most of it. Awards? Show them off!

5. increase your visibility - the more connections you have, the more visible you are. Start adding connections as soon as you’re set up and always look at the recommended connections on the homepage.

6. Change your mindset - this is not facebook. This is all about networking and making business connections. You don’t have to be friends with your connections, just see potential in being business associates.

7. Connect to twitter - Use twitter to keep your LinkedIn status constantly updated. This will also help pull your LinkedIn followers across to other areas.

8. Build a company page - Make sure your company has a profile and that this is full and up to date. Get all staff members to link to the company profile.

9. Start discussions - once you have a company profile and followers, start some discussions within your field. People can be invited to discussions, which is sure to expand your network. It’s also great for research.

10. Use linkedin to post jobs - we all trust friend’s connections and those that come with recommendations. LinkedIn gives you a chance to filter potential employees in a very open and frank manner.

Efficient and helpful customer service will not only help retain your current customer-base but it will help grow your business by word-of-mouth. As excellent customer service should be the top priority of any business, here are a few tips:Be present at all times. Your customers must know that when they need you, you will be there. You must be present and accessible at all times. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have a 24/7 call centre but you should at least aim to have an email service which is answered within 24 hours.do not pass the buck Do not pass the customer from pillar to post. No matter how difficult the situation is, let the customer know that they can contact you personally.Follow through Whatever you do, don’t make promises that you can’t keep. It’s easy to appease a customer with grand ideas and promises, but if you can’t pull them off, you will lose trust. If you promise delivery by a certain time, make sure it happens. Do not say it, if you can’t do it!Keep things simple Don’t confuse your customers with too much jargon or terminology that they may not understand. This is the easiest mistake to make as you forget that your understanding of your business does not reflect the average customers.

IBO Cruiserweight champion, Danny “The Green Machine” Green will put his world title on the line when he steps onto the canvas to face former light-heavyweight, world champion, Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver this July on home soil.

Currently sporting a ten fight winning streak that includes victories over Roy Jones Jr, BJ Flores, and Paul Briggs, the 2000 Olympian and current IBO cruiserweight champion, Danny Green is displaying some of the best form of his decade long pro career, and at 38, the former world light heavyweight and super middleweight champ is looking forward to adding another high-profile name to his resume in the form of Antonio Tarver.

Tarver starred in the movie “ROCKY 6” and is a multiple world champion at the light heavyweight division and famously became the first man to knock out Roy Jones Jr in 2005. Like Jones Jr this will be Tarver’s first professional fight outside the US, however, the 42 year-old is confident he has the power and skill to do what no man has done before, knock out Danny Green.

“I don’t mind going to Danny Green’s backyard to fight him, I’m a world

champion. I’ve heard that the Australian fans are great, and I’m going to enjoy putting on a show for them. It’s nothing personal, just business, but I believe that by knocking Danny Green out, I’m letting the world know and Danny Green personally this is a fight he should have never taken.”

Only time will tell, meanwhile 3008Docklands spoke exclusively to Danny Green about his pre-match preparation and his plans for taking on America’s Antonio Tarver in the biggest boxing event of the year.

This is Tarver’s first fight outside of the USa, why is he making this long journey and what is so important about this fight?

He figures he can come to Australia and take the cruiserweight world title, a world title he has never won, whilst getting paid a handsome wage. Being ultra-competitive, I figure he is thriving on the challenge, because I have fought overseas five times and realise the potential difficulties that you can face.

Both you and antonio Tarver have an impressive career record, yours stands at 31 wins/3 losses and Tarver at 28 wins/6 loses). Watching his past

fights and knowing his record as a strong and hard hitter, how important is studying Tarver’s techniques in preparation for this fight?

Antonio was rated as the best light heavyweight of the previous decade ending in 2010, and considering he has fought and beaten some of the legitimate

superstars of the modern era, studying and analysing every move he makes is of upmost importance. Video analysis is something myself and my coach Angelo Hyder consider extremely beneficial in learning my opponents weaknesses and strengths, which helps us formulate a terrific strategy for the fight.

To quote antonio Tarver, “danny green was a hellava super middleweight and a good light heavyweight, but cruiserweight?” He plans on bringing you your first ever knockout loss. How do you respond to this?

I plan on being in the best condition of my entire career, which I will have to be in to defeat the calibre of fighter I’m facing in Antonio Tarver. I have never been knocked out, nor has he, I’m not big on predictions but I have a feeling that this one will not go 12 rounds!

The ‘Magic Man’ is a southpaw, is it difficult to fight an opponent with an unconventional stance?

The reason it is more awkward when facing a southpaw opponent is that the majority of fighters are orthodox, meaning that their left hand and left foot are forward. This poses stylistic differences which can sometimes also create awkwardness.

Over the years you have fought as a super middle-weight, a light heavy-weight, a heavy-weight and most recently as a cruiser-weight. How do you make weight for different fight classes and how does your training & diet vary?

In order for me to make super middleweight I had to shed 10kg which was extremely detrimental to my performance

towards the end of my time at that weight. Hence, the move up in weight to light heavyweight where I also won a world title, but still shedding nearly 7 kg to make the light heavy limit was proving very difficult so then I moved up to cruiserweight and won the world title there. I am very lean, so shedding any weight is very difficult for me and at cruiserweight I feel very comfortable, it’s a very pleasant change not having to shed weight, which is what I have done for the last 20 years of my career.

danny you are now 38 years old, where do you see your boxing career in the years to come?

Hopefully living the dream with all my marbles intact!!

YMCA Docklands, also known as the ‘Centre of Excellence’ for YMCA Victoria is excited to launch its most recent innovation in creative fitness programming, SNO-FIT. With the recent cold weather and significant snowfalls in the Alpine region, the launch is timely for snow sports enthusiasts.

SNO-FIT is a 6 week intensive fitness program designed to prepare both the recreational and competitive skier and snowboarder for the rigors and demands of the sport. ‘Most skiers and boarders head for the slopes at

the first sign of snow, with little or no physical preparation’ says Andrew Ward, Manager of the Docklands YMCA Facilities and co-creator of the program.

“Skiing and snowboarding are a major departure from normal daily activities, so the stresses on the body, muscles and joints are extreme in the first few weeks of the season’. It is our intention to prepare snow sports enthusiasts and athletes physically and mentally for their sport so they maximize their enjoyment and investment, and importantly help them avoid serious injuries that are all too common” says Ward.

The SNO-FIT program is a phased program that consists of 22 specialised workout and educational sessions that are completed over a 6 week period. SNO-FIT can either be taken as an individual program with a trainer, or as part of a group of 4.

‘There are six phases to the SNO-FIT program’ says Pandeli Laskaris, co-creator

of the program. The six phases are Building Foundations, Building Endurance, Core and Leg strength, Strength and Speed, Building Stamina and finally Mobility and Flexibility. There are also 4 additional non-compulsory sessions including Nutrition, Yoga, Injury Prevention and a technical equipment session. Athletes and recreational skiers and boarders will be ready to hit the slopes in their personal best physical condition” says Laskaris.

The SNO-FIT program incorporates all of the latest functional training philosophies and equipment including the use of TRX, VIPR and Kettle-bells, in addition to the more traditional fitness and cardio equipment. Participants in the SNO-FIT program should have a basic level of fitness before commencing a group program.

The first SNO-FIT Program will commence on Monday, May 30th and continue with weekly sessions on following Mondays except for June 13th which is the Queen’s Birthday

public holiday, this session will take place on Wednesday 15th. The SNO-FIT Program operates out of the YMCA Docklands on Collins location (ANZ Building). Only 12 places (3 groups of 4) will be available for the exclusive pilot program for 2011. Interested parties should act fast to secure a place.

For further information on SNO-FiT or YMCa docklands, please contact andrew Ward on 0459 354 578 or by email [email protected]
