As a pioneer of COB-type high-wattage LED, Citizen Electronics provide LEDs, achieving the world’s highest level of luminous flux and efficacy and develop LED pursuing “quality of light” to enable an illuminated object to look more beautiful.

Citizen Electronics Co., Ltd. - Born out of the Citizen Watch Company and its need to develop state-of-the-art micro-miniature electronic components, Citizen has grown beyond to become a technology leader in key components for today’s most advanced products. Their technology brings more flexibility in design and application. They are helping leading-edge makers of lighting apparatus , PDAs, digital cameras, automo-tive products, measurement instruments and others to better interface between human and machine. Citizen’s surface mountable LED products are raising the bar for performance and design creativity. They are also the pioneers in developing the world’s first SMD-type LEDs and developed and launched the COB series version 1, the world’s first LEDs for high-efficacy lighting providing luminous flux of to 17 675 lm and later on version 2 with up to 23 549 lm !

What does CRI mean and why is CRI important in LED lighting? Can’t tell the difference between the black and navy colored socks in your walk in closet? Could be that your current lighting source has a very low CRI! Not all light is made equal; some light renders color better than others. Color Rendering Index (CRI) is the measure-ment of how colors look under a light source when compared with sunlight. The index is measured from 0-100, with a perfect 100 indicating that colors under the light source appear the same as they would under natural sunlight.

This rating is also a measurement in the lighting industry to help discern naturalness, hue discrimination, vividness, preference, color naming accuracy, and color harmony.

    - Lights with a CRI that is measured greater than 80 are considered to be more than accept-able for most applications.- Lights with a CRI that is measured greater than 90 is generally considered “High CRI” lights.

    CRI >95 CRI >90 CRI >80

    CRI (color rendering index)

We choose to work with the Vivid series of Citizen cob LEDs.As they are intended for lighting decorative areas in restaurants and hotels. With the Vivid series we cheat a little bit by saturation the colors. All colors are slightly saturated and look more ‘alive’, ‘vibrant’ or ‘vivid’. Thus enhancing a positive experience for guests.

All LED arrays, COBs and modules with fairly large light emitting surfaces (LES) suffer from an inability to easily control all light emitted from the LES. This uncontrolled light (spill light) makes it very difficult to create drama and contrast in accent lighting applications.

The VIVID High Intensity have a LES of only 6mm while still providing enough lumens. The High CRI Version 6 have a LES of 9.8mm while still providing the same amount of lu-mens as the VIVID HI Serires.

Small LES (only 1 light source of just 6 or 9.8mm)

Large LES (50mm die with multiple light sources)

Quality of light and shadowBut why not use a quality GU10 retrofit bulb?People often ask what advantages a seperate electrical driver with a large light engine have over a simple GU10 reftrofit bulb?

The ventilation design of the brass luminaire and its LED+heatsink allows for a vastly improved natural air convection resulting in an extended life span of the internal COB and its light emmiting quality.Furthermore the LED is the only electrical component being cooled.

Quality of light: Aging LED lose quality of light and color! With sufficient cooling the aging of the led is vastly reduced!

Quality of electronics: retrofit bulbs have their electronics jammed into the lamp! In order to be able to put all these electronics in these small parts, bulb manufacturers use smaller electronics and poorer cooling resuliting in poor lumens per watt efficiency and bad quality in lifetime.

When lighting a piece of artwork it comes in handy to be able to calculate the beam diameter at a given distance. This little table can help you with this.

Would you like to calculate this yourselves in Ms. Excel?

Copy paste the following formula in an excel sheet. A1 represents angle, B1 represents distance to object.

    =B1*2*TAN( ((A1*3,14)/180) / 2 )

As LED solutions have grown in market share and made dimming a simpler and more valu-able option for many applications, so has the concern about flicker. Managing flicker is par-ticularly a challenge when light is being dimmed.

The three primary lighting objectives when considering dimming are that it be smooth, deep, and has a low risk of visible distractions or physiological effects of flicker through the dim-ming range. Technically this requires a high degree of coordination between the various com-ponents in a full LED system. Quality dimming is the result of engineering the right dimming methodology and ensuring performance compatibility among the system components.

The best dimming results are in conjunction with a good power source or LED driver.

Power sources with DALI or 0-10v/1-10v dimming technologies give superb dimming effects.

When the building installation doesn’t allow DALI or 0-10v/1-10v the light engincs are also nicely dimmable if in conjunction with a quality Trailing-edge dimmable LED driver and quality dimmer! However when dimming with a Trailing Edge dimmer, flicker is inevitable. If you still want to have superb dimming effects but the building installation doesn’t al-low DALI or 0-10v then you can use drivers with wireless dimming technologies such as eg. Casambi.

It tells you how bright the light source is which shows how far away from an object you can be and while still being able to see it. Any light source eventually becomes too dim to see the further away you are. This is differ-ent from lumens (a total light output) because it’s the value of light intensity from any point in a single direction from the light source.

Candela (cd) – also commonly called candlepower.

    Lumens, Candelas and Lux ...

Lumens are the most common measurement for a light bulb. The lumen (lm) is a measurement of luminous flux, or the total amount of visible light. Simply put, the lumen rating is how much total visible light is produced by a light source. The difference between lumens and candela? For a bulb emitting 1 cd, that bulb would also have a luminous intensity of 12.57 lm. Obscuring half the bulb (making it a hemisphere instead of a full sphere), a 1 cd bulb will emit only 6.28 lm. This is because lumens measure the total amount of visible light from a light source. When the bulb is fitted with a reflector and or lens. The lumens will be focused in a certain direction. Depending on the angle of the projected light, the beam of light will change in intensity. This beam of light is expressed in CANDELALight bulbs are usually listed in lumens to show how much illumination the uncovered bulb produces. Spot lamps will often display a lux value for a set distance to give you an idea of how bright your surface will be for task lighting.

    Lumens(lm)

Lux (lx) measures illuminance, which is the amount of light on a surface per unit area. A single lux is equal to one lumen per square meter. If the lamp displays its brightness as a measurement of lux, it usually lists a dis-tance from the bulb since any change in distance or bulb type changes the lux level. As an example, if you place a 100 lumen bulb in a flood light that shines on only one square meter of surface, that surface will be lit at 100 lx. However, if you back the flood light away to shine on four square meters, the surface is now lit with 25 lx.

    Lux(lx)

The left chart are recommendations at desk height (80cm), The european commision has EC directives for minimal lux required in public and work environments. This chart does not represent the requirements by law.

The easiest is to use an online calculator!Search for “candela lux lumen calculator” in Google. But off course you may want to know how to calculate this yourselves!

Lumens to candela calculation:For uniform, isotropic light source, the luminous intensity Iv in candela (cd) is equal to the luminous flux Φv in lumens (lm), divided by the solid angle Ω in steradians (sr). The solid angle Ω in steradians (sr) is equal to 2 times pi times 1 minus cosine of half the cone apex angle Φ in degrees (º) ! not radians in (c) or (rad)

Candela to lux calculation with distance in metersThe illuminance Ev in lux (lx) is equal to the luminous intensity Iv in candela (cd), divided by the square distance from the light source d2 in square meters (m2):

! keep in mind ! Calculations to lux are best done with Candela ( 100cd equals 100lux at a distance of1m ). This is because when redirecting light using lenses and/or reflectors around 10% lumens are lost!
