INTRODUCTION

On 19 and 20 June/ 1984, samples were collected on the Shenandoah Riverin compliance with a SWCB request to investigate the possibility ofcontaminated groundwater leaching through faults into the river. Thesegeologic faults run under the Shenandoah River in a diagonal fashion.

METHODS

1) Sampling

A cord calibrated in 1 meter increments was attached at eachbank running parallel to geologic faults. The upstream (control)station was located about 25 meters downstream from the gaugingstation located just upstream from the Avtex Fibers plant. Down-stream samples were collected about 10 meters downstream of a drain-age discharge area. At this station, a substance resembling ash •was floating on top of the water from the bank to about 3 metersout. Photographs are enclosed-ofeach sampling location.

Sampling at the upstream (control) station began 1 meter fromthe bank and progressed in 2 meter increments from the east bankto the west bank. Sampling began at 0900 EDT on 20 June and wasfinished by 1130 EDT the same day.

Sampling at the downstream station began 3 meters from the bank(due to shallow, silty conditions) and progressed in 1 meter in-crements from the east bank to the west bank. Sampling began on19 June at 1030 EDT and was finished by 1730 EDT the same day.

All samples were grab samples taken at mid-water depth. Sampleswere iced and preserved (where appropriate) on site and deliveredto Environmental Laboratories, Inc. for analysis. Sampling methods

Significance Testing

Two river water quality samples were collected upstream

and downstream from the AVTEX site in June 1984* Summary

statistics for these water quality samples are presented in

Table 1 . The two samples were compared to detect statis-

tically significant differences in upstream and downstream

water quality.

The number of observations for each water quality

variable differed for the upstream and downstream samples.

In addition/ the variance for a water quality variable was

not always constant between the sampling locations. The

equality of variances for two samples can be tested by an

F-test. The form of a hypothesis test for ecjsality of

variances is shown in Table 2.

In order to detect differences between the seans of

two samples, the pooled t test is employed for the following

cases:

1) equal sample sizes and equal populationvariances

2) unequal sample sizes and equal populationvariances

3) equal sample sizes and unequal populationvariances

The form of the pooled t hypothesis test is given ij» Table3.

For the case when sample sizes and variances are

not equal, Welch's approximate t statistic can be substitued

for the t * calculated in the pooled t test. Welch's ap-«r» f. •

proximate t is calculated as follows:

V •• Vxl X2•v S 2 S 2Sl + S2nl n2

The number of degrees of freedom are calculated by:

Sl2/nldf - (n,-l) (n--l) where c« x "L1____z _________ ~T5—— 2S-* — *

^ ^ 1 2(n2-l) C" +--{n1-l) (l-c)41 __ + __2 x n, + n-1 2

A summary of the tests for equality of variances and

equality of means are listed in Table 4. Only a significantf "increase in sulfate was detected in the downstream sample.
