C.L.A.S.S. (Career and Leadership Alignment for Student’s

Success) Committee aims at sharpening skills of the

students by providing them opportunities to lead and to

connect with prominent personalities in the business world.

The students felt really happy by this kind gesture of the

faculty to recognize their efforts. The event not only served

as a pleasant respite from their humdrum schedules, but

also spurred quality time over good food. Everyone

enjoyed their lunch to their heart’s content. The event

ended with effulgent smiles on the faces of both students

and professors. Such a wonderful opportunity to

strengthen student-faculty relationship in a social setting

which could only be possible by the unflinching support of

our Dean and remarkable efforts by the faculty and

students.

Starbucks doesn’t want us to feel lonely while sipping on our cuppa. The roundtables at their

outlets have a purpose to fulfill – to make us feel at home even when we are there alone.

All employees at Amazon spend two days every two years working at the company’s

customer service desk, including CEO Jeff Bezos, to help employees understand the

customer service process.

Warner Music paid $14 million to settle a ‘Happy Birthday’ copyright lawsuit and put the song

in public domain. Earlier it could collect royalties from anyone who sang it.

There were only nine items on McDonalds’ original food menu when it first opened in

California in 1940. The menu included pure beef hamburger, tempting cheeseburger, triple

thick shakes, golden French fries, root beer, hot coffee, an orange drink, cold milk, and cola.

The proverb says "All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy". Sportsmanship means to have

team spirit and cooperating with one another to achieve a common goal. Keeping that in

mind, a game management activity was scheduled on 19th October 2019 for students,

supervised by The Dean of School of Management, Prof. Nagendra Chowdhary. The students

were divided into 4 teams and they experienced the dynamics of management through

exciting games. Everyone displayed commendable interest and participated

enthusiastically. Sound mind lives in a sound body. Sports promote mutual understanding,

social harmony and discipline. They also develop the body, brain, personality and leadership

qualities at the workplace. Overall, it was an insightful experience and students are looking

forward to more such fruitful workshops.

The objective of the session conducted by

Ms Sujata Deshmukh was to inculcate self

leadership in the students. She illustrated the

importance of asking oneself questions such as

“Who are you?”, “Where are you going?” and

“Why are you going there?” She went on to

articulate the meaning of enduring success.

She explained why success should be

emotionally renewing and not anxiety

provoking. She then conveyed the 4

ingredients of success- Happiness,

Achievement, Legacy and Significance. She

further expressed the importance of these

ingredients and engaged the attendees

through an activity on the same. The attendees

were asked to make four circles of these

ingredients and fill them as their future self.

She then analysed and interpreted the

exercises which further guided the attendees.

She went on to throw light on carrier anchors.

She enlisted these anchors- Technical

expertise, Security, General Managerial,

Entrepreneurial creativity, autonomy, service,

Lifestyle and challenges. She explained why

understanding and prioritising these anchors is

essential to make job choices or take carrier

decisions. She explained the significance of

eliminating distractions with the help of a very

witty equation by Timothy halloway which says

“Performance = Potential – Interference.”

Towards the end of of the session she revealed

that even the most successful CEO’s are

frequently incapable of dealing with their inner

critic. Real success comes by leading yourself,

hence Self leadership is of utmost importance.

First, we would like to thank you on behalf of the team of

MAGNOSIS for taking out time for this interview. The purpose of

this interview is to break some unnecessary barriers between

the faculty and the students of School of Management because

we as students end up thinking of professors as just teachers

but only the faculty knows that teaching is only a part of their

life and not the whole of it.

Q: How was your day so far?

A: It was a day of mixed experiences, some good and some not

so good. Spent major time in classes today, heard some good

speeches and enjoyed the mischief that usually happens in the

class.

Q: What is the one value you always carry with yourself?

A: Trying not to be judgemental at times, look at situations, and

not categorize people in boxes of good or bad. Believing in

equanimity, I hope to have the capacity to face any situation

with the same.

Q: Why did you decide to join this University and what has

your experience been so far?

A: I was previously working at IIM Lucknow, but some certain

family situations required me to be here. While looking for

options, I found out about Bennett University. It was in 2016

when the Times Group had just set it up and seemed a

promising place. The leadership in this University, the Vice

Chancellor, the Deans and the faculty, all of them had the right

credentials. This place had the promise of becoming something

great and seemed the best for me. Experience so far has been

good. It’s a new University, so it's good to see it taking shape.

I’ve always taught post-graduates, so, its good to interact with

under-graduates for the first time. It's been quite enriching and

a good learning to see students who’ve come right out of

school.

Q: What characteristics of a student do you admire?

A: I like students who are open to ideas, willing to try and experiment. Also, I like slightly

mischievous students, that shows up the bright side of them.

Q: Is there any incident in your personal or professional life, which became a turning

point in your life ?

A: Talking about my personal life this is not the appropriate platform to share the story, but

it changed me as a person. It was related to my kids and changed my perspective towards

life. It just made me look at life very differently. Professionally, I’ve had good experiences.

Few days back, one of my students gave me a call from the hospital that he’d given birth to

a daughter in Kolkata. After fifteen years, getting a call from a student made me happy

about what I am doing right now! Another student called me up a few days back to convey

his wedding invitation that has been scheduled for February, next year. He further added

"You are my godmother, and I would be grateful if you could be there to shower your

blessings." These kinds of things make the whole profession worth it!

Q: Describe a situation in which you did all the right things, but you were still

unsuccessful. What did you learn from the experience and what would you like to

suggest to the students?

A: I had a student in the founding batch of BBA, very quiet, sitting in the last and clearly not

interested. I tried my best to ask him why he wasn’t interested in any of the subjects in the

entire course. He wasn’t interested in education; he just wanted the degree. His goal was to

takeover his family business. The student attended the minimum classes and studied to get

the minimum marks required to clear the course. He had it clear in his mind that he only

wanted the degree at the end of the three years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the audience of 50,000 Indian-Americans who

gathered at Houston that time for decisive war had come for a definitive, all out fight

against terrorism. He declared that US President, Donald Trump would completely support

this struggle. As a poet, PM Modi recited a two-line couplet he had written to make the

point clear. Despite challenges India was aiming at transformation in place of incremental

gain. ‘Vo jo mushkilon ka ambar ho, wahi to mere hausle ki minar hai'. After delivering his

speech President Trump walked off stage. Making repeated stabs at ‘another country’, P.M

Modi said the latter was interested in coveting Indian Territory when it could not take care

of his own territory. This country had a hand in every major extreme violence across the

world. P.M. Modi hoped to talk on substantial matters including trade later in the week with

Trump.

Trump had declared him as a ‘Master Negotiator’ while P.M Modi described the US President

as the ‘Master of art of deal’. Appearing on the stage together both Modi & Trump

described the event as ‘History in the Making’. This was perhaps the first appearance by a

US President at such a rally organised by the Prime Minister of an overseas Country. This

ended the evening walking hand in hand. There was no announcement on Trade has been

anticipated. Trump sought greater exports of American defence equipment and energy to

India. He expressed solidarity to fight against radical Islamic Terrorism & Border

Management. There were loved cheers from the audience of the Indian-American at the

N.R.G Stadium. He also spoke of space cooperation & the upcoming tri-services between

the two armies. “Our dream is better, our future is brighter”.

Trump spoke these words as he left stage. P.M. Modi said a new history & chemistry will

begin when India was challenging itself & changing itself nothing is impossible. He talked

about his domestic achievements. The audience cheered him. He also said that democracy

depends on flowering of several languages. P.M. Modi spoke of farewell to article 370 &

benefits of the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. He described Trump as the most

loyal friend doing a truly exceptional job for India.

Trump spoke on the revival of American economy. He wished P.M. Modi a happy birthday. He

wondered how Modi & his party got large numbers of votes in the 2019 elections. He praised

Modi for his different domestic achievements such as lifting 800 million from poverty. P.M.

Modi began by wishing “Good Morning Houston, Good Morning Texas, Good Morning

America". Trump is a very special person. He needs no introduction. He appears on every

global politics. He described him as an unprecedented warm, friendly, accessible and

energetic. Various cultural programs proceeded P.M. Modi’s Address. The Show threw light

on the unsung heroes in the Indian American Community. Appearing to campaign for Trump,

Modi said, “Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar”. He immediately walked fast and shook hands with the

US congressmen. The Democrat Steny Hoyer introduced him to the audience. He spoke in

New York that India did not give ‘Yudh to world but gave Budh’.

Terrorism is a great challenge for mankind & the World. It is against basic principles on the

basis of which U.N.O. was formed. The whole world should combine now for terrorism. We

should provide new strength & new direction to U.N.O. He feels pride on the behalf of 130

crores Indians for addressing the U.N. General Assembly. We must save water which is given

to the poor in different schemes & more is to be done.

Bennett University organized an Outbound Tour Programme in Shimla for its MBA students

from 10th to 13th October 2019. The tour was an action packed episode filled with lots of fun

and learning events which was supervised by the Dean of School of Management, Prof.

Nagendra Chowdary. The students experienced the thrill of adventure sports, warmth of the

bonfire and learning of management through fun and exciting games etc. Amidst all the

happenings, the students also chilled out as they were surrounded by the beautiful views

and delightful weather of Shimla. But, of all the beauties of Shimla, the most important thing

that the students enjoyed was the togetherness and friendship among each other. The best

and the most entertaining days of a person are the days of their student life. This tour surely

gave the students a lot of sweet memories which they will remember and cherish for the rest

of their lives.
