Notes From The Choir Loft By Christopher Urbiel, Director of Liturgy & Music

Today’s Liturgical Music: The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Opening Voluntary: Prelude (William Harris)

Entrance An>phon (Richard Rice)

Entrance Hymn: 776 The Church’s One Founda(on (Aurelia)

Gloria & Mass Ordinary: Mass in Honor of St. Benedict

(Robert LeBlanc)

Responsorial Psalm & Gospel Acclama>on (Owen Alsto )

Offertory Hymn 450 Be Not Afraid (Dufford)

Communion An>phon (Richard Rice)

Postcommunion Hymn: 641 Now Thank We All Our God (Nun

danket)

Recessional Hymn: 431 My Country, ‘Tis of Thee (America)

Recessional Voluntary: Nun danket alle Go (G.F. Kaufmann)

Today’s music reflects thankfulness for God’s mighty

deliverance, as proclaimed in today’s Psalm and Gospel.

The Entrance Hymn is a reflec(on on the besieged Church

becoming the Church triumphant. It is matched to the beloved

tune by Samuel Sebas(an Wesley (1810-76), the most

influen(al English musician of his genera(on. Similarly, the

familiar “Be Not Afraid” by Bob Dufford upholds God’s promise

of protec(on, while “Now Thank We All Our God” is a joyful

expression of gra(tude. We sing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” in

an(cipa(on of Independence Day celebra(ons. Before Mass

begins, we hear the resAul “Prelude,” wriBen by Sir William

Harris (long(me organist of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor) and

performed at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.
