FOOTHILL OF MADNESS: SIMO MATAVULJ`S HRISTOSVOSKRESE
Summary
The lesser-known Matavulj`s story Hristos Voskrese (1905)
presents amechanism of developing madness in an individual or
group, by a social en-forcement that causes great fears and deep
mental crashes. The narrators com-ments on the result of such
enforcement carries a sentimental tone of socialconformism.
However, the description of the enforcement itself is
extraordinarilysophisticated, plastic and carries an ethical value.
The article establishes this dua-lity, expressed as the narrators
undeciseveness, and examines its effects onto theaesthetic value of
the story. Connections are established between the story Hris-tos
Voskrese and the medieval novel Varlaam and Joasaf, the oriental
legend ofthe little Buddha and the works of art of the Belgrade
painter Djurdje Teodorovic.
